I really like the mockup linked above, and I think the besy feature is easily the longer return key.
I can't begin to explain how much that narrow one annoyed me.

I Could be wrong (sorry no polls), but IMHO, I would think a PRO would be more interested on pro features and horse power on a laptop than thickness of the unit. A traveling pro would be interested on the weight, features and power rather than on the thickness. Again I could be wrong.

Lets hear from the pro's ..... Would you be willing to use a thicker MacBook Pro (same weight) if it had more power and better graphic card?

The reason that there are different classes of notebook is that even within professionals there are different classes. There is a segment that would be better served with a thicker notebook with better features. That being said, Apple really doesn't care what we think. Right or wrong they've decided that they've wanted to become the Armani of computers so to speak. Something more utilitarian might be very useful, but doesn't have the wow factor that they want.

Do you think Apple will really update the MBP now and again in June? It would make sense if this was simply a speed bump, but I question whether or not they will add multitouch now and then do a case redesign later.

The MBP hasn't really changed physically since it was released right? It seems like multitouch would come with a redesign...

My prediction (maybe wishful thinking in part): Macbook Pro Update in next few weeks will be the whole deal. add Penryn, multitouch trackpad, new keybord, and slightly different/thinner case. If there's going to be any new ports ie. HDMI, add those now too.

When Montevina comes, that will be the "speed bump" because I think WWDC will be focused on the 3G iphone and a tablet Mac. An updated MBP doesn't seem like big enough news for a keynote, and since the Penryn is physically smaller than the current processor, the case redesign should come with that.

Ok... what do you think?

PS: I'm no expert, I'm fairly new at all this so this is pure speculation

To be honest, if there was to be a semi-radical update to the Macbook Pro I think it would have shown up at Macworld. I expect a speedbump now and a complete redesign based on the look of the Air at WWDC.

I really hope they come out either this or next week. I haven't used a mac since the bubble imacs we had in middle school, and I've been waiting since September to get a MBP. The more time that goes by the more the dell xps 1330 is looking better, especially now with Ubuntu on it.

You'd want to compare the XPS 1330 to the Macbook or Macbook Air. The Macbook Pro has a much better GPU and of course the larger screen size.

move along.... nothing much to see here

I'm not expecting a major update.... multi touch and slight speed bump and a magnetic latch..... nothing major but any kind of a refresh is a welcome one :)

I consider myself a Pro. 3d work ( 3ds max under XP ), and 2D work ( Photoshop, Premiere, AFX ) - and all I'd like is a speed bump, and a higher res screen on the 15" screen. It's just right other than that really.

A desktop replacement isn't what I want. I buy a laptop because I want mobility. If I want ultimate power, I resort to my desktop machine.

Significance of shipping times?

Going back to something that was discussed earlier in the thread, last Sunday night I ordered a MBP from the Apple store online, and was told that it would ship in 24 hours. I ended up canceling that order after deciding to wait for the update. I just went to the store and put together the same machine, and the ship time is 3-5 days.

This will be my first Mac, so I don't have any experience with orders from Apple. Are these sorts of fluctuations in shipping times par for the course, or is this actual tangible evidence that the update is coming and they're letting the stock run down?

Let's diferenciate our expectations from what possibly will come out in this next Macbook Pro update.

Forget about blu-ray , 8gb Ram support and black keyboard. Even though I would like the new Mbp to have the Mba keyboard.

The penryn, the trackpad multitouch, the LED for 17" and the magnetic latch are most likely comming out in this update.

New graphics card and SSD as an option are unsure but possible.

But don't even think about a redesigned Mbp. So just keep your mockups and your dreams where they belong.

I just saw an ad for the Flair leading up to the Superbowl?

So in opposition to my earlier post, would all of the metrosexuals please don their mock turtlenecks and throw all of their support behind the Flair IMMEDIATELY. Buy them up by the zillions. Steve's ego is on the line, people!

Go Gadget Go!

are you guys sure that the MacBook pro update will be really small? I mean we haven't seen any hardware updates to these things in almost a year let alone a case update. I really loved the MacBook pro design but right now I'm starting to get pissed off at it. I know you guys say to get a MacBook pro when I need one but I also want to get the latest hardware and it doesnt make sense for me to buy old hardware. I'm tired of waiting! So my question again is: "is the MacBook pro really going to only have minor update? And how can you be sure?"

I have a first-gen MBP which is perfectly fine for everything I throw at it, running Leopard.

I am going to wait until Apple incorporates Intel's Nehalem architecture into the MBP sometime in early-mid 2009 - integrated memory controller, new microarchitecture. By that time I also imagine we'll be into the 2nd or 3rd generation of 65nm or 55nm graphics processors, so it will make sense to upgrade. I would also imagine sizeable SSD drives will be available, along with Blu-Ray.

That will be the time to buy.

Agreed. I have a MB that I bought a week ago (my first Mac :)), and while it would be nice to upgrade to a MBP, I agree, it doesn't make sense to upgrade to a new laptop that will probably have incremental boosts, at best. In the meantime, I'll pick up an iMac to use at home and to completely rid my family of M$ (with the exception of my 360, but even that may be changing, seeing as I haven't been able to sign on to XBL since before Christmas). That and an iPod Touch to replace my Palm T|X.

2009 sounds right.

Id give the MBA a couple more weeks of prominent marketing (both in stores and on the website) and then we'll see the MB Pros. Unless its a speed bump and no redesign, in which case theyd just do a quiet rollout.

So, if its a redesign, theyll want to show it off and will wait a few weeks. If its not a redesign, it could be any day...

Just my thoughts.

This website is called MacRumors. Noone is sure of anything but are merely saying what they think will most likely happen.

By reading, it appears the consensus is that this will be a 'minor' update. However, noone really knows for sure. Just be patient and you'll soon know what's really going to be released.

Expect lots of whinging and people saying they'll wait for the next update.

MBP please

i sold my 10 months old MBP 15.4 2.16 3gb 120gb 128mb, because I wanted the new hardware and get the 2.4 4gb (retail) 160 256, but then i heard the rumor back mid december... I m still waiting... and suffering. almost 2 months now.... 2 MONTHS WITHOUT MAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hope it comes out soon. i just wanted to let everyone know that i m suffering tooooooo, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!. I NEED IT FOR WORK!!!!!
i would really be happy with:
standard 15 inch 2.4 2gb (hopefully 8gb ram upgrade 2x4gb obviously)
256 standard card 512 higher model
and please at least 1680 screen on 15 inch. 1920 would be too much i know...
buuuuuut then i would get the higher 2.5/6 15.4 512 video 200gb or any 7200rpm hd and if an option, the Hi res screen.

i guess that this wish could become truth. except for the screen res....

ps. i m on xp now... suffering a lot.. a lot than you could think...

MBP 4.1, Italy is waiting for you! speriamo bene

sheesh ... Debbie Downer. Isn't wild speculation half the fun of a rumors site?

Lighten up.

So I checked that Sku in the system at bestbuy and it is legit. I found two other skus for the upgraded 15" and the 17" as well. Now that does not mean anything really Best Buy just knows that Apple is going to eventually refresh the MBP and they put placeholder skus in the system.

now as far as someone else saying that Best Buy does not get Stock until a month after apple, that is not true. We had the SR Macbooks right when they were announced and we also had the new iMacs right when they came out. the Air will be in stores within the next few days for demo and will be in stock for sale in the next few weeks.

Yes ;) but the problem is... other people take the wild speculation seriously and then are outraged when the wild speculation turns out to be just that.

It's good to have a little sanity sometimes... perhaps only on Sunday nights?

Im glad I didnt wait!

I love this machine and when the new ones come out, by the time the kinks are all out of the new ones say around september I will be happy to sell this one and get a new one and have had nearly a year with this great machine:cool:

I got you beat, you should have gotten the Core 2 Duo MBP so that by the time I wait for the one in September you'd have a really awesome machine. But then again, you could just buy the one that may come in Feb. so that you aren't waiting another 7 months for another machine like the other suckers.

p.s. No 8GB for a laptop just yet, the chips aren't here from what I understand and the price of those guys would be outrageous.

Will do, lowbuzz. I'm going to organize my extensive network of rich, hipster, metrosexual friends to buy one MBA per week (because money is NO object for my set), just so that we can create artificially inflated demand, and convince Apple to drop the MBP and MB lines. The fact that Apple continues to work on the MB and MBP lines really pisses me off, because it just competes with what I and my rich, hipster friends really want.

Seriously, man. I truly like it - warts and all. It's clear that you don't, and I respect that, but it's really not a threat. Steve still loves you.

Let's hope we'll see them tomorrow (Tuesday)

My review of a Powerbook Air

I have tried one of those at the Apple store in NJ today.

Two issues:
1. the Apple key is 4 keys away from the left, instead of 3, as on my desktop keyboard . What is the "fn" function key for? Very confusing.
2. The screen is horrible!!! I just cannot stand these glossy screens. For me that is the one show-stopper. I need a matte screen.

Otherwise the laptop was very snappy. Performance was great except that it easily choked on 1080p quicktime videos. The weight is very light, the thin body makes you forget that it is longer than the 12" Powerbook by a good inch (depth is about the same).

We are still waiting for a better small, light Powerbook to replace our 12" Powerbook. Unfortunately, because of the glossy screen, it is our conclusion that the Powerbook 12" remains the best travel laptop. We still use it professionally for that purpose. If it was just as fast or as thin as the Powerbook Air, though....

Not having a CD drive, Firewire, or a removable battery do not matter to us at all.
