I've been reading this thread all weekend and I'm so anxious for the new MBP that I can't seem to tear myself away from the rumors!

I'm on a PowerBook G4 (Ti) and it's been through some tough times. The optical drive is dead, there are several cracks in the case, the battery is dead, the power connection is touchy, and the latch is busted and makes the poor thing think it's closed when it's not and vice versa (screen issues). Sadly, it's still a MUCH better computer than my work provides -- a Dell "laptop" circa 2001 that weighs about 10 pounds, takes literally 15 minutes to boot, and can barely open a Word document.

I was expecting an update in January and therefore put off the purchase until then... but now, I just am hoping that this poor thing doesn't die before I get the shiny new lappy on my porch. :D

Lol I'd be happy working on that PowerBook rather than my Windoze PC while I wait for a MBP update :p

the invintory sheets were convicning untill I saw the product demations. 9in thick by 19 by 19. That is imposible I say these are fakes but who would do such a bad job making that up?

How long does it take to replace the processor in and existing laptop? I mean.. the last time I tried to do something like this it took WAY less than 8 months and you guys are supposed to be professionals!!! C'mon!

It was worth a shot!

I don't think any of the new Macbook Pro rumors have any credibility... I'm so hoping they come up with a new one though. Would it make any sense for apple to release an updated version now?

Considering there are:
- new mobile processors
- Apple need to complete against forthcoming PC Penryn laptops
- multi-touch trackpad
- my G4 powerbook is waaay to0 slow to do much :-D

I'd say, COME ON APPLE, RELEASE MBP NOW!! :D

Do you see Apple offering a BTO option for SSD's in the MBP update? Reading the benchmarks that were posted I didn't see a huge improvement over the regular hard drive and being worth the $1k option?

I can't see why they can't but it's a big drop in space for what you would otherwise get from a MBP. Personally I wouldn't touch one in a laptop unless it was 120 gigs or more.

I'm in no rush for a MBP but I'd like to wait for one with the multi-touch just so I'm not left with previous generation hardware :)

Surely these rumours and people holding off purchasing must damage Apple's sales?

It may be slowing their sales but with the billions and billions they have in loose cash it's definitely not hurting their pockets.

I only sell my current machine for a new one if the new one had a major overhaul and I can get close to retail on eBay for the old one. (Same with my iPods)

I have checked the Canadian Retail system, and ther is NOTHING on there about a new SKU for the new MacBook.

BUT!!!!

We also dont have the SKU in our system yet for the MacBook Air and we are getting that.

I will see if my boss can see something that I cant, they get more access then i Do.

I've never bought a Mac before but want to get a MBP. I wonder if the first release of the updated machine will have hardware/firmware problems for a while on release? I need the Mac ASAP, and hope I won't be waiting for bugs to be ironed out.

Apple don't let a first time buyer down!

I hope your last name is something other than Wilk, or you may be in trouble with your boss' boss.

While I can confirm that there is no new Macbook pro skus in the Futureshop system, I can say that the Macbook Air sku has been in the system for more then a week if not 2. $1899.98 .... department 60, sku 10098705 ... check again Bestbuy reps its been on both Canadian Bestbuy and Futureshop's websites since day one ... and I doubt James is in trouble for posting something that is public knowledge already at @ www.

Are there any "New iMac" or "iMac 1" or "New Mini" etc of some sort? If that isn't the case, then the rumors are true that Apple intended to release the MBPs at MWSF but delayed them. Else, why would BB stop at adding new SKUs for the MBA and MBPs and not the rest of the Mac line?

I didn't check the Apple desktop classification in the system, they are listed under a different subclass than mobile computing obviously, but in a general Apple SKU search I don't recall seeing any iMac SKUs. Thats a good point about only putting MB and MBP SKUs up but I think Best Buy may be liable to believe some rumors too. It was widely believed that the big thing at Macworld was going to be an ultraportable Mac or Macbook Pro so perhaps they only added these filler SKUs because of what was rumored. I'll check at work when I go in today and get back to you tonight.

Also has the in-stock date for the MBA changed? Is the MBA available now at BB? If not what is the current in-stock date? Could it be possible that MBA and MBPs are arriving at BB on the same date?

Well the Macbook Air in-stock date still and has always said February 10th. Our store does have an Apple shop set-up and we have a rep who works in there 5 or 6 days out of the week. He said in speaking with his supervisor that, at least our location, would be getting one display unit as soon as this week and would receive "quantity" around the 22nd or 23rd of Feb. It could be possible that they announce new MBPs this week or next and they could start shipping to retail with the MBA's. Lets hope this is the case.

Only new sku in our system is the Air ... and only the 1.6 @ that ... I check every shift I work ... Personally the most exciting thing I've seen incoming is the LG p300 -u ... that is a sexy ass laptop ... just waiting to be osx'd

For the box size reported since it is inventory, it could the box the manufactures ships in. Having worked in retail, things are very rarely individually packed. I would assume their shipped two or more at a time.

Oh please God let the updates be tomorrow. I've been waiting ever since I heard there were going to be updates at Macworld.

I don't think the update is going to be major. Penryn and Multi-touch. I'm hoping for a magnetic latch, but I won't be disappointed. The latch is the only thing I can see happening other than the processor upgrade and the multi-touch, because if you have to make the pad larger and move it around, then why not add a magnetic latch right next to it?

I'm still debating on the 15" and the 17" though. I do a lot of HD video editing, but at the same price as the 17" i could get a 15" with a Dell 24" monitor. I guess it depends if they give the 17" better features or a bigger hard drive. I guess we'll just see.
