Ya wonder how high of an impedance they mean. Like do they mean 80ohm? or 250ohm? (normal stuff is around 32ohm)

This all sounds great but have they addressed the problem of blowing out the speakers? I’ve had this happen twice with the same MBR. Both times it was a weird audio spike that happened after an installation.

I still don't think this is going to power power hungry planar magnetics.

I was happy that Apple added a notch to the display, but I’m really disappointed that Apple didn’t give us the highly valuable feature of no headphone jack.
[/sarcasm]

At least those iPhone folks who freaked out about losing the headphone jack will sleep well. Audio and video professionals live and die by wired headphones. Course now they get to embrace the notch 😇 (which I never even notice on my iPhone)
About the notch, comparing a notch taking place on an empty menu bar on the iPhone is not the same as a notch taking place of interactive element on a menubar which is the most important UI element on macOS after the dock. They might have place it on the dock, it would have been more confortable.

I mean, even keynote will have menu elements going the other side of the notch, but on the other side, there is already something. I already don't have enough place, and all of my coworkers also don't have enough place if there is a big notch taking that very precious place on the menu bar. Not to forget the tabs will be covered in fullscreen...

I hope that on a 3000 USD base 16" macbook pro, there is a way to have a full menubar below the notch.

I would like to know if there is any information on the DAC built into the system. What does it support, for instance full 24/192 that is available on the Music app. I doubt any MQA support, but at least full Hi-Res would be a welcome with the new headphone support.
I’m actually really curious about this as well, was kind of hoping to see upgraded DAC in iPhone 13

High impedance, yet a lot of them are XTLR or 6.3mm cables. It would be better for it to have what they removed a few years ago (perhaps it does, I’m not sure).

This was such an unexpected, and absolutely incredible addition
Apple moved finally a liiiiiittle bit, after the pro users kept complaining for years about missing ports and bad keyboards. This should be an incredible, awesome and unbelievable move?

No way! Finally is the word you were looking for.

Have fun using advanced high quality headphones, that you can't use with Apples mobile devices because there is no headphone jack, with your new MacBook Pro.

Slowly working our way back to 1980s sound quality. Maybe we'll get back there someday.

I miss peak analog so much.

🙁
I hear you. It's incredible how much bluetooth speakers and headphones have lowered the standards.

But hifi is alive and kicking. I love Airplaying lossless music from my iPhone directly into my Hegel amplifier or using my wired Meze headphones on Mac. On the go I use Airpods for convenience, but the sound quality is quite bad in comparison.

The $800 powered speakers on my desk that I bought 3 months ago have optical in. As do my high end integrated amps with high quality DACs. It’s not only about headphones.
I'd like to see Toslink back, too, but I think that ship has sailed. Folks who need it have probably moved on to audio over USB-C, for better or worse.

Is this jack also an optical output? You could plug TOSLINK optical audio cable to older mackbooks for super lossless sound when watching movies.

EDIT: OK so if Toslink is not available, then how do you watch movies with lossless surround sound? HDMI or ?

I don't see it listed as such. In the old days when it was also a TOSLINK output the specs explicitly stated that. The lack of such text implies that the feature is not present.

Apple's new MacBook Pro models are equipped with the "best audio system in a notebook," according to Apple, with upgrades to the headphone jack and the speaker system.

The 3.5mm headphone jack now offers support for high-impedance headphones. High-end headphone options that are high-impedance models from companies like Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic will offer better sound quality on the MacBook Pro models, a boon for professionals who want to use the MacBook Pro with studio quality headphones.

The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models also include an upgraded high-fidelity six-speaker sound system with force-cancelling woofers and wide stereo sound, along with a studio-quality three-microphone array with a high signal-to-noise ratio and directional beamforming.

It would be really nice if Apple took the same attitude with sound quality to their iPhones, instead of shoving everyone onto gimped bluetooth audio. Of course, the bluetooth has meant making a fortune on super environmentally friendly, disposable, non-battery-replaceable, landfill headphones with a hefty price tag to match. And we know Apple's priorities when it comes to quality vs profits, so here we are.

The speaker quality of the Macbook Pro 16" (Intel one) is one of the most truly impressive (and surprising) features of the machine. It honestly seems to defy physics.

If these are an even further improvement, I can't wait to hear how these sound.
"truly impressive... ...It honestly seems to defy physics... ...I can't wait to hear how these sound."

Don't you think you're jumping the gun just a tad there, my friend?
