I'm confused. Can someone explain to me how a touch BAR can have a full keyboard on it?! And why would anyone want that if there's a physical keyboard right there? Maybe I'm misunderstanding...

This is talking about the virtual keyboard system assets. The fact that they now include a keyboard without a separate function key row suggests a new product with a keyboard that similarly lacks a function row.

Huh.

I imagined the OLED strip bar as a sort of special purpose media key row that accompanies the function row (above it), not replaces it.

Guess I was wrong. Not sure how this is going to fly.

Touchbar might be cool...

However, if I email Tim Cook do you think he'll let me keep my F3 key? Don't care much about the rest.

Maybe Apple is planning on getting rid of the entire keyboard in a few years.

Brainwave dictation? I wonder how you would try to keep that private and not have Siri v2 pick up all thoughts and ask questions about them out loud.

Just two sentences are needed for the news. "A new virtual keyboard in 10.12.1 lacks function key row. This confirms Apple will use the touch-based OLED bar on the new portable Macs."

Time is expensive. I've not even checked my FB yet.

I don't know how much more of this courage I can take.

I actually like clicking a button. I use the escape key a lot.

The home button on the iPhone 7 - the vibrating makes it almost feel like a real button, but not quite. You know what else feels like pushing a button? Pushing a fing button.

I wonder if this isn't so much about the function row in particular, but rather to get us used to the idea of virtual keys rather than physical ones. With the rumours of the e-ink keyboard, it would be reasonable to expect that they could integrate the tech and use tiny haptic drivers to simulate the keypress, allowing for a flat surface (basically a clamshell tablet where one part could become the keyboard or trackpad or drawing surface or whatever is necessary). It would then be a response of sorts to the Microsoft Surface, but done in typical overstated (and underwhelming) Apple style.

"Hi aloshka,
Thanks for your input, we've made a dongle for that! Hugs. Tim."

They've already announced it 8 years ago:

But seriously I can't wait for Apple to release MacBooks with the rumored customizable e-ink keyboard, if only to save us having to fly 6000 miles to buy a laptop with the keyboard layout we want.

It could well be they're only going to remove the physical F-keys on some models, to make them smaller or something. I haven't given up hope for proper keys yet!

So you won't be able to silently boot your MacBook if you've left the volume up before shutting it down.

Currently, I'd just hold the Mute key but that won't work until it's booted.

They should just allow you to do away with the startup chime altogether.
