Because a touch pad instead of physical keys will be a dealbreaker for many. If you cannot feel the keys blindly, you constantly have to look down to see what you're touching, it's not a keyboard, it's a toy.
Thanks! Couldn't have said it better right, now!

Why would there still be a tactile function button? It gets in my way actually, hoping they would remove.

Developers constantly use F keys. Run, step, breakpoints. Most advanced applications heavily rely on F keys, especially on Windows. I already have to use an external keyboard, because the Macs don't have PgUp, PgDn, Home, End, Del.
Every damn Windows laptop maps those four keys exactly where they are on a Mac.

Why does the press/rumorbloggers have such a hardon for this function key strip?

I don't know anyone who uses function keys other than for adjusting brightness or volume. And having ui elements that change is horrible design.

It is pretty sad when this is the biggest feature of the new MacBook.

How about some real innovation again, Apple?

Well when someone creates an app that gives you a "send me pizza post haste!" button, you'll change your tune

I need function keys for virtualization apps. Please don't turn my Mac into a gimmicky toy.
Then those virtualization apps can show them as function keys, just like you have today.

I dont think i ever used esc on mac. What does it even do? To leave full screen mode? Just tried on Chrome. Nope
It activates the Cancel button or equivalent in most dialogs. It does a whole lot of different things in the Terminal.

virtual reality
flying cars
teleportation

i can keep going

but seriously why no touch screen? why no fold over the screen and make it a touch screen?
I could see that being useful for drawing and such. But trying to control macOS with touch sounds like a nightmare, it wasn't designed for it.
