i don't think a PPC forum is needed, but would like to see a 'ibook/powerbook' sub-forum under the laptop link, and a 'power mac' sub-forum under the desktop link.

as everyone else posted, there are still bazillions of these out there in everyday use (i've an office full myself), and it seems short sighted to drop them now.

just my two cents.

So...exactly how it used to be?

I think it's a shame that the 'Mac' forums are so far down the page on a site called MacRumors.

This just adds to the thinking that Apple has become a mobile device company first, and a personal computer company second.

I had the same thought :-(

can't we put apple hardware above iphone/ipad/itouch? (although maybe I'm just bitter because I don't own any of those products, yet they are always the first to come up ) Or at least above apple applications...

Well, there are still some people, like me, who have PPC machines, and would like to post about them. Where do I post about them now?..I think MR should make a dedicated PPC forum, and that's where people ask things about those machines only. I still use my various PPC based Macs, right now, I'm angrily pounding this message out on my Quad G5. ;)

I agree and don't really understand why that category has been removed. How much trouble could it have really been keeping a couple places open for those machines? I know technology is all about the NEW NEW NEW but it's not like PPC is ancient history. I still use a powerbook nearly every day as a glorified netbook in conjunction with a Mac Pro for the heavy-lifting. Even sentiment aside, it seems a shame that the machine that lead me to find this forum no longer even has a category here. Show some love for your roots, MacRumors! :)

I would imagine that a few years back, the MR forums/site was run by XServe G4/G5 machines. And some of the PPC machines aren't old, and the best ones can run, at a slower pace, with a few of the Intel machines. :) My G5 works perfectly fine for what I use it for.

So, Apple Applications now has subforums for iPhone and iPod touch Apps and iPad Apps. Which leads one to a conundrum when their app is universal (i.e. runs on both iPhones and iPads).

I usually don't use the main page so it's good for me either way. I have about 100 threads I subscribe to and then hit the New Posts link when I log in (if I'm not looking for anything particular). I'll scroll through about 300 or so (if there are 900+) and then "Mark Forums Read."

no, it used to be ibook/macbook, and powerbook/macbook pro.

i think splitting the PPC stuff out from the intel stuff would work the best, hence my original post.

easy to find, won't muck up the new stuff threads, but we can still have threads about the old stuff.

i like all the other changes i've run across so far, seems easier to find stuff.

+1. I like that thought very well. Us PPC lovers can go and talk all we want about our PPC Macs, and keep the Intel fanboys out ;)
It would keep the cluttered posts that have PPC-related questions out of the way of Intel-related questions.

This was brought up not so long ago, although I can't remember the exact thread or context (It's somewhere in S&FF though). Doctor Q pointed out that only very rarely does a PPC-only related thread come up; usually it's in the context of "such-and-such works on Intel Macs, but not on PPC Macs."

We are almost done with our forum reorganization. Stay tuned for the announcements and details.

Update: Please see our announcements:
Thanks for the feedback while we were working. Your comments influenced our decisions and fine-tuning.

We had hoped to finish over the past weekend but we found more loose ends and ripple effects than expected, such as changes required to sticky threads, updated forum descriptions, and the details of our announcements.

Thank you to our moderators for all the planning work that went into organizing these changes.

I noticed the change for the iTunes forum. What will happen to the existing iTunes-related threads that remain in the iPod forum? Will they be moved to the Mac Applications forum, or do I need to keep the iPod forum checked in Forum Spy to track updates in those threads?

While I understand that Apple hardware and software are closely linked, I've always wondered why threads about iTunes (the software and store) were in the Apple Hardware category, but it's a bit of a pain to have it lumped in with the Mac Applications thread. Just makes it a bit harder to browse iTunes-related threads (not that such threads were always posted in the iTunes forum!). I like the idea of having Forum Spy show iTunes threads, but not iPod threads.

I agree with this. I understand the attempt to shrink the forum page, but having one giant mess of "Mac Applications" seems like it will get unwieldy quickly.

Also, why is there both an "Apple Software" section and an "Apple Applications" section. I think putting having a subforum in Apple Software for iTunes (or even more broadly, iLife) would make more sense that having one forum for all the applications made for the Mac.

... except iTunes is not part of iLife.

If you browse through the forum you'll find that almost every thread names an application. That makes it quite easy to see what's of interest and quite easy to search for a given subject (an application). It may be a large forum by thread count (it's forum #2 so there's a lot of history!) but it's as organized as they get.

So you took what was already second biggest section and added more to it?

I know it the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter, and it's partly just a reaction to change, but it just seems like it could be more streamlined. The other two forums of the same scale as 'Mac Applications' each have three subforums to help streamline their focus, perhaps something similar would help the Mac Apps forum. Break out subforums for the most popular application discussed, which I would guess would be iTunes, Mail, and maybe iPhoto (it's hard to tell, as I did a search for each of the iApps and came up with what must have been a database limited response, as they were all either 987 threads or 992 threads).

If the absolute thread in number of threads causes a problem we can archive the early years of the thread to shrink it. But it doesn't cause a practical problem because when you browse or search you see the most recent threads first.

The rate of new threads is not out of line with other forums, so that's not a problem either.

Yes we could have subforums for certain applications. We don't need to rule it out, although everyone will have a different opinion about which applications should be featured, and it'll change over time. If we decide to try a divided approach, we can add or remove some subforums later. For now we'd like to try our current approach.
