This just adds to the thinking that Apple has become a mobile device company first, and a personal computer company second.
Well considering Steve Jobs said as much, I'm not sure what the confusion is here.
i don't think a PPC forum is needed, but would like to see a 'ibook/powerbook' sub-forum under the laptop link, and a 'power mac' sub-forum under the desktop link.
as everyone else posted, there are still bazillions of these out there in everyday use (i've an office full myself), and it seems short sighted to drop them now.
just my two cents.
I think it's a shame that the 'Mac' forums are so far down the page on a site called MacRumors.

I'm surprised a Mod or Admin has posted anything yet.

Well, there are still some people, like me, who have PPC machines, and would like to post about them. Where do I post about them now?..I think MR should make a dedicated PPC forum, and that's where people ask things about those machines only. I still use my various PPC based Macs, right now, I'm angrily pounding this message out on my Quad G5.![]()
I agree and don't really understand why that category has been removed. How much trouble could it have really been keeping a couple places open for those machines? I know technology is all about the NEW NEW NEW but it's not like PPC is ancient history. I still use a powerbook nearly every day as a glorified netbook in conjunction with a Mac Pro for the heavy-lifting. Even sentiment aside, it seems a shame that the machine that lead me to find this forum no longer even has a category here. Show some love for your roots, MacRumors!![]()
So...exactly how it used to be?
no, it used to be ibook/macbook, and powerbook/macbook pro.
i think splitting the PPC stuff out from the intel stuff would work the best, hence my original post.
easy to find, won't muck up the new stuff threads, but we can still have threads about the old stuff.
i like all the other changes i've run across so far, seems easier to find stuff.
It would keep the cluttered posts that have PPC-related questions out of the way of Intel-related questions.
Why?
What will he/she say? Yep, MR has changed the forum structure.
We are almost done with our forum reorganization. Stay tuned for the announcements and details.
While I understand that Apple hardware and software are closely linked, I've always wondered why threads about iTunes (the software and store) were in the Apple Hardware category, but it's a bit of a pain to have it lumped in with the Mac Applications thread. Just makes it a bit harder to browse iTunes-related threads (not that such threads were always posted in the iTunes forum!). I like the idea of having Forum Spy show iTunes threads, but not iPod threads.
I think putting having a subforum in Apple Software for iTunes (or even more broadly, iLife) would make more sense that having one forum for all the applications made for the Mac.
If you browse through the forum you'll find that almost every thread names an application. That makes it quite easy to see what's of interest and quite easy to search for a given subject (an application). It may be a large forum by thread count (it's forum #2 so there's a lot of history!) but it's as organized as they get.I agree with this. I understand the attempt to shrink the forum page, but having one giant mess of "Mac Applications" seems like it will get unwieldy quickly.

If the absolute thread in number of threads causes a problem we can archive the early years of the thread to shrink it. But it doesn't cause a practical problem because when you browse or search you see the most recent threads first. So you took what was already second biggest section and added more to it?
Yes we could have subforums for certain applications. We don't need to rule it out, although everyone will have a different opinion about which applications should be featured, and it'll change over time. If we decide to try a divided approach, we can add or remove some subforums later. For now we'd like to try our current approach.I know it the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter, and it's partly just a reaction to change, but it just seems like it could be more streamlined. The other two forums of the same scale as 'Mac Applications' each have three subforums to help streamline their focus, perhaps something similar would help the Mac Apps forum. Break out subforums for the most popular application discussed, which I would guess would be iTunes, Mail, and maybe iPhoto (it's hard to tell, as I did a search for each of the iApps and came up with what must have been a database limited response, as they were all either 987 threads or 992 threads).
