New magsafe connector not as 'safe' as old one

I've used both cables extensively. The cable will not pull out if tripped in the right direction.

This is fine for me however, as the long battery life prevents me from charging unless it is at my home desk ;) The cable works much better with my home setup compared to the old cable.

Here's an idea, don't trip over the cable? Seriously, you can't expect Apple to focus on idiotproofing all their equipment. Don't put the cable where you can trip over it, it's that easy. People always find something to complain about...

I disagree. I had the same connector on my MBAir and it was "safe". A few times I had pulled the cord straight off either by pulling too fast with not enough slack or by tripping over it

Eh, if I may:

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain
'undue strain' = someone tripping over the cable.

edit: with this MagSafe it does seem to depend on the direction of the pull. When pulled to the left it will come loose, when pulled backwards or to the right it seems to work as a hook.

Does that read "guaranteed trip-safe" to you?

Even if it's designed to pull loose under strain, extra measures does not hurt... It's not as safe as the previous one. Deal with it or get an old one :)

I also like the old one much better

1. it's easier to put on (since you can flip it 180deg)
2. it's not routing the cable to the back (i have my MBP clamshell sitting on the desk backing a wall
3. it looks nicer IMHO

Though disadvantage is that the cable will pull out of the plug, sooner or later. Typical Apple cable problem.

Wow I don't get it. He's pointing out a flaw and Apple did make the magsafe a selling feature by saying how safe it is. Now it's not as safe anymore. If all that complaining gets on your nerves then don't read the post nor reply.

Actually, yes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLAljaPwfYo

That was the whole point of bringing in the Magsafe a few years ago. This is why it was named the Magsafe.

There were little clips and statements on their website about how the magsafe was to prevent those unfortunate accidents. I believe they targeted trips.

What other "undue strain" did you imagine when you read that?

Seriously.

I kind of see where the OP is getting at with this. It is a convenient feature and a piece of mind for people who have little ones, big pets, or clumsy family members or friends.

It's not a make or break in terms of buying the machine, but it's something I personally expect, especially after they still advertise it as such.

Bingo - and most importantly, Apple *reduced* the functionality of the plug in the redesign. It's rare that they make something worse, but in this case, they did. Worst of all, it gives a false sense of security.

What's the point of an expensive magnetic plug attachment that doesn't release?

It does release, just not in certain circumstances. The old plug won't release either if pulled straight on.

This should NOT happen under normal circumstances. I think that most failures were probably due to abuse as opposed to normal use.
Sorry. You're just plain wrong on this one. The fraying at the top of the strain relief is absolutely a problem with the original MagSafe. Apple has been trying to find ways to cope with it for years by changing the length of the strain relief and the formulation of the cable insulation.

Apple settled a class action lawsuit about this last year.

I think the main problem here is that the magnet is a lot stronger than before. The white non-aluminium T-shaped connecter for macbooks worked very nicely, and even though MagSafe 2 has the same form, its magnet is a lot stronger.

A weaker magnet is all it needs.

Its still a much better type than the plug in one on any other windows laptop I've ever used.
As others have said, you can't expect it to be idiot proof you need to be at least a little bit careful, and with a near 8 hour battery life mines rarely plugged in anyway

You three realize you are discussing the older magsafe in a two-year-old thread, right?

Whoa. You just made my day with that. The funny part is I read through every post before posting and I didn't realise it was the old connector!
