Probable not one to judge as I haven't used a new L one, but I had an older style T that melted in a flash of sparks at the top. Now every MagSafe I have has a Mac MagSaver on them...

how long ago did the Magsafe ports change? the last mb i bought before my 2011 i7 was an original uMB. i like the new design as it matches my computer, it looks very neat and tidy. i think its has a little bit stronger magnets but it still pulls away. i like the new change, i thought it just came out in the 2011s but maybe i was wrong

I believe the first use of a back pointing Magsafe was the original MacBook Air and then when Apple redesigned the white polycarbonate MacBook to a unibody design it also got the "new" Magsafe design, then the next refresh of the MacBook Pros got them. I'm too lazy to go look up the dates of those, but that should give you a general idea.

There's no problem until there is.

If the cord gets pulled straight back, the laptop will move with it. Just something to keep in mind when in a vulnerable place. ;)
How is that going to happen? If you walk parallel with it, you will either bump into something bigger first or not run into it. It would be one thing if it was connected at an unwise angle or plugged in the middle of the room (with no wall for oblivious parallel walkers to walk into first), but that isn't how it is intended to be used.

True and true.

Much sleeker design, at the cost of safety.

Then again, the old plug was cheap in comparison.

The very first plug I got a while back fell totally apart. It was a TERRIBLE design. God awful junk that exposed wires. I had to tape it up and that didn't even work. They wouldn't even replace it for months. I get mad just thinking about it.......rrrrrr :D

but that isn't how it is intended to be used.

It sounds as silly now as it did when Steve said it about the ATT iPhone 4 issue ;)

@Op....Obviously if you slowly tug at the cable, it probably won't come out. The previous plug didn't and neither does this one. It depends upon the surface the laptop is on as well. If it's suddenly pulled out, it will unplug regardless of any angle. I did some testing on my laptop as if I were a person walking by and hit the cable with my leg. There wasn't an angle that I couldn't get it to unplug. So while it MAY take a bit more to unplug that the previous revision, it still does the job. If it fixes all the issues people had with the previous revision, it's a great change.

The new design is much better simply because it does not disconnect as easily while sitting in your lap.

Pull wise you are 100% correct, but the 'yank' angle window is small, probably less than 20 degrees.

Quality wise, like the older ones, they break. I've never had a computer that I have not replaced the powercord in at least once. It's simply a high wear item and highly mobile users will beat them into the ground.

It's threads like this that become the rationale for Level One tech services to start with their much maligned question: "Have you checked that your computer is plugged-in?"

Seriously, if you have a problem with your plug, keep it to yourself.
