I love when companies fuse and leadership takes all these beautiful decisions. HBO Nordic -> HBO Max -> Max in. Dplay -> Discovery Plus -> Max. All these rebrands have happened in the span of just a few years.

Who in the right mind figures that constantly rebranding is a good idea? Consumers get confused, and you build next to no brand loyalty or recognition. And who figured "Max" is a reputable brand? For years, Max was a channel on the Discoerry network in my country featuring shows marketed towards males. The term "Max" is extremely vague, and it must be a nightmare regarding copyright.

And why wouldn't they update the current app? Why make it even more confusing and cumbersome by making this a separate app? These decisions are baffling to me.

Huh! Would be great if they released an app that worked…

Can they make up their minds or are they going to change the service name and app every 2 years?
Only if the company changes hands every 2 years.

The sale/merger of Time Warner Inc with Discovery was completed on April 8, 2022, so the new owners are mergering and changing the name of their services, hence Max.

Wonder if with the higher price "all HBO series and movies" is not going to be a lie anymore, or shows like Westworld are still gone and they plan to continue with their plan of few months back.

It worked for me through my AT&T login. I get it through our mobile plan and signed in on Chrome and it worked right away.
I’ve been trying to sign in with my AT&T account and it fails every time.

HBO was synonymous with original, high quality (i.e., expensive to produce content). I guess that era is over. Getting rid of the HBO name says a lot.

Yes, the app sucked and needed an overhaul. But the new naming and getting rid of HBO in the name is much more than fixing the app.

Also, the new app gives an error from the get go and hangs. Excellent job, Max!!

what a joke. i would absolutely pay for reasonable costs/features but they just don't want to be reasonable.

i'll take my usenet and torrents.
🤣 Someone who wants to pirate instead of paying will find a way to justify their pirating.

What is your "reasonable" price? A majority of the streaming services actually lose money right now. With these new prices, Warner Bro Discovery expects to turn profitable this year. It costs a lot of money to produce the consistent quality of shows that HBO does.

The new $9.99/mo with ads or $15.99/mo without ads isn't overly expensive. And if you pay for the full year, it works out to $8.33/mo with ads or $12.50/mo without ads.

The best thing to do is subscribe for 1 month, binge, and cancel. Then resubscibe after a month or 2 passes. Rinse and repeat. Or subscribe after all the episodes for the newest season of your show airs and then cancel after you've finished watching it. No sense in paying for a recurring subscription, IMO.

It's like Apple stopped using Apple as a brand name.
Introducing... the Watch series 10! What's that? You expected an "Apple" watch? No no, you see, it's different from all of those other watches because the product name is written in a special font.

Looks like they are using a completely different / stand alone backend as I can no longer login with my Mexican HBO Max account on the max.com website (automatically redirects from hbomax.com to max.com). So far it still works with the "old" HBO Max app (not the Max app). Let's see for how long ...

This SUCKS. I loved being able to watch the US HBO Max content instead of relying on what's available in Mexico and now I actually have to pretend to be in Mexico (VPN) to get access at all
Is Max available in Mexico at this time? I know we have to wait for (sometime in 2024) to get the new merged service here in Europe so it might be the same fre Mexico

Cutting the cord is awesome. Instead of paying a cable provider $150 a month for tv and internet, now I can pay all the content providers individually an amount that adds up to about $150 plus pay someone else for internet service.
What streaming TV services do you subscribe to that add up to $150/mo? You'd need to be paying for close to 10 (if not more) services at the same time.

Yes, cord cutting is awesome because I get to subscribe to the services (equivalent of channels) when I want and cancel when I want. You cannot do that with cable TV. I paid for a lot of cable tv channels I didn't watch. I pay significantly less now than before.

Based on initial user reports, it looks like the Max app for Apple TV does not synchronize with the TV app's Up Next section, and the service has reverted to using a custom player instead of the native tvOS player. Some users have also reported problems logging in to their existing HBO accounts on Apple TV, while others are having trouble seeing 4K HDR content.
And that's going to force Apple to issue ultimatum if they want to have their show appear on app store: use the native tvOS interface OR face app from being removed from app store.

Worst of all, looks like no more tv authenticated service on HBO. If you ar e cable customer wanting to watch HBO while on the go, it's extra $$$.

Also would not be surprised if HBO name is also removed from liner tv platform soon, like how Paramount is sunsetting a long Showtime brand from linear tv once Showtime and Paramount+ is merged.

Yayyyyyyy... downgrades at higher prices! Seriously, how are you going to launch with issues that the original app solved almost precisely 2 years ago?
Have you inflation adjusted those 2 year old prices? The way inflation has been the last 2 years that turns out to be rather significant, remember you will also get access to discovery content.

No but I just assumed it’s technically the same streaming service just with a different color scheme?

Actually, now I wonder what happens if you subscribe to Max directly, will you loose access to being able to access HBO Max internationally (e. g. traveling) while previous HBO Max subscribers will still have access? Would be a big down grade for new users if you travel a lot

I have HBOMax through YouTube tv. Just logged to my account and my plan is listed as the ad free plan. Does this mean I’m going to be downgraded to the Max ad free? Losing Atmos and Dolby Vision 4K? No thanks and that’s real 💩
