HBO is iconic. You wouldn't rename Apple - Mac. Starbucks, Star.

Don't change an iconic name to something lesser by picking Max. Nobody cares about Cinemax. Nobody. Everyone knows HBO. It's not TV it's HBO. Home Box Office

When you saw these as a child/adult, you knew what was coming next. Quality, an amazing show/movie with no commercials!

Family time.

You wouldn't rename "Federal Express" to "FedEx" or "International Business Machines" to "IBM" or "United Parcel Services" to "UPS" or...

Why would they ever get rid of the “HBO” brand name?
So that grandfathered deals expire that are associated with HBO. WB is now in profit generating mode after too much was given away by AT&T running this service only to pawn it to Discovery later. Deals that allow access to their VoD service without subscription such as access to Max because you subscribe to HBO will EOL such as for Comcast HBO subscriber. AT&T customers I read get some limited time access to Max that requires some subscription to bridge the next year, but then it requires a Max subscription afterwards.

Well lets be more fair. You would not rename Federal Express to "Express". HBO is your huge massive silverback gorilla in your streaming arsenal. Now you dropped HBO to leave MAX, which has a similar name to the historically sub-par HBO rival, cinemax. From a brand management perspective, hbo is just a subchannel now.

If I was king for a day Id have retained the hbomax name and just added discovery's crapware to another hbomax 'hub'. Must have been a VP wrestling match inside the company and the 'ghost adventures' vp won.

I get HBO max as free add on from ATT fiber internet. I wonder what the new price will be, if it is anything more than $3-5, I will opt out.
I use more on ipad than on Apple TV so have not tried my AT&T cell account there but on ipad my old HBO Max app still there did not ask me to upgrade and it remains logged in. I only had to log in recently with arrival of my new Gen 6 iPad Pro and now it remains logged in and so far shows working fine. I suspect they will get to us eventually LOL

It worked for me through my AT&T login. I get it through our mobile plan and signed in on Chrome and it worked right away.
Same with my plan via AT&T Login working fine on my iPad where I usually watch have not trie my Apple TV

I don't get how you can say all this and still not understand that the "Max" rebranding is in the best interests of HBO as a brand - which is exactly why HBO has been pushing for a rebranding for years. They do not want to be associated with "Ghost Adventures" or whatever crapware the rest of WBD has, as you put it. They want HBO to be HBO specifically. HBO isn't going away and I have no clue why so many of you think it is.

Again, the comparisons you guys are making are way off the mark. "HBO Max" would be like if FedEx bought Kinko's and then renamed the package delivery service "Kinko's Express." You've got it entirely backwards. And AGAIN, if you feel so weirdly protective of HBO as a brand, you shouldn't want it to be watered down.

Difference is that by the 90s making a music record had gone really cheap. Instead of multimillion studios with engineers and set musicians everyone with a computer and some talent could do it.
Most of the music ever since has been made that way and it took a decade or 2 before the big corps gave up those unearned extra profits.

With movies and TV-shows the trend is going the other way evermore bigger and elaborate productions where 1,000,000$ / episode is only feasible at the bottom end.

So no "everything for 9.99 a month" won't be happening anytime soon. At least not for current content.
Of course I’m not talking about 10 bucks a month. I’m talking abot an app in which you watch every movie and tv show you want, with a large variety of pricing options - be it purchase or subscription. Of course, the movie studios never want to be just content pipes, so I don’t expect that to happen… ever.

Looks like they are using a completely different / stand alone backend as I can no longer login with my Mexican HBO Max account on the max.com website (automatically redirects from hbomax.com to max.com). So far it still works with the "old" HBO Max app (not the Max app). Let's see for how long ...
There is another Max-ican app to be released.

I get my HBO through Spectrum and that is how I’ve logged into the HBO Max app. Looks like with Spectrum I now only get the Ad free plan and not the ultimate that includes 4K and Dolby atmos. I was told that they are “still negotiating” but at this time I can’t upgrade via Spectrum, I would have to purchase through Max directly

I just downloaded the app. Looks like it brought over my HBO Max watch history but not Discovery+. My wife is going to have to figure out where she is at on all her cooking shows.

I use it mostly on my iPhone 13 PM with my AirPods Max. I should try on iPad Pro to see if it is working. It is giving me an error on new Max app on iPhone. HBO Max app is working on iPhone and Apple TV.

Interesting. I am subscribed via AT&T unlimited family plan. I do not have a fancy TV so seldom use the Apple TV version anyway so the problems they’re of less important to me. So far the HBO Max app works and I am logged in to AT&T account not old paid account I used to have. I typically watch half dozen shows on HBO and random thints as I find more on other streaming services so if it works in the resolution of my HBO Max app on the iPad I am ok with where that is based on how I use it currently

I can't believe they're considering 4K to be premium now.

Even the cheapest new TVs are 4K now. 4K is no longer "special". Previously Netflix was the only company with this horrible idea; now HBO Max is joining them?

And these companies wonder why people pirate content.
Irregardless 4K OTA broadcast in the USA is not available is it? ;)

Well I did not download the new Max app which is there in App Store. I just opened my HBO Max app on my iPad. It’s working there and not gonna try to new app for now should that not work. Seems like there are issues for the new app especially on Apple TV which I little use except for few things I watch with wife (not a fancy tv just a little 30 inch old LG)

It is especially strange since both apps are still listed. Like you can still download the HBO Max app as well.

It definitely is ridiculous that both apps are still listed in the App Store (I figured that HBO Max would just receive an app update to Max). Since HBO Max app is still working (for now), I’m tempted to bypass installing the Max app.

So am I but I am sure we will receive a "please update to our Max App to continue streaming" pop up eventually

Yep I see new one but gonna leave HBO Max still working on iPad where I primarily use my AT&T account
