Not major editing..... not cutting video.

Just importing images.

I realize that Lightroom is one of the worst written modern programs, but I honestly expected more out of a MBP.... I bought a 32 gig M1 Max EXPECTING it to be able to handle simple things like image import.

Yep, i saw also high memory usage if you open a lot of tabs. And is slowing massively down. It's very slow compared with my 5900X desktop and 11800H laptop. If im a regular Apple user with only Apple hardware for years, maybe i hadn't noticed it.

You seem really unhappy with your purchase. I suggest you return your MacBook and go back to your 5900x desktop and 11800H laptop. Those are clearly better for your workflow.

This feels like a memory leak and a problem that Lightroom should absolutely fix. Are you seeing similar slowdowns in other programs?

I use Capture One Pro and it's working pretty well, I haven't run into any issues on my 16GB 14in Pro

@tormac21

But i need a laptop with good hdr screen and good battery life.

I thought a Macbook Pro could handle such baseline apps much better.

A Zen 3 will laugh about it.
Well, then why are you complaining about your MBP in every post? Just feels like you're shilling here. What you're saying makes little (or no) sense.

If you're not trolling, then I suggest you take a good look at what you actually need a laptop for, and get something that works for you and makes you happy.

Lightroom is well known for poor memory design. It's been that way since inception. I dumped it years ago for Capture One.

I don't have LR 10.3 to benchmark against, but on a clean install with LR 11 and a restored catalog, it has been fine. 4-5GB of memory use on average.

So you need a laptop with a good hdr screen and good battery life but then come here and do nothing but complain about how poorly it actually performs for you. Tell us again why you haven’t returned it and bought something else?

Just take a look at every one of this guy’s posts and you can clearly see he’s trolling.
