I just installed Hyundai firmware on my BMW computer chip and now the car does weird things

LOL try install Mercedes firmware, thats fun, anyway back to the topic at hand, i've heard apple knows about this issue but the correction is in Snow Leopard and the Open CL/Hybrid SLI functionality, im not sure why they seem to be abandoning Leopard customers though, let me think...oh yeah...maybe to force people to upgrade.

The 9600 is not a top of the line card. Don't expect it to play even 2-3 year old games at full settings. Hell, it even gets a black screen of death playing WoW which is over 4 years old.

Crap, proof?:

It's mid range yes, but to say it can't play 3 year old games at full settings is wrong given the advancements in GPU tech. Granted the guy in the video turned down a couple of things but still. The WOW crash is a bug IMO.

got my mbp for xmas.
had no problens, did all updates first, efi, smc
using 32gb home sp2 on NTFS, just did basic windows updates
havent had a problem
im actually frickin amazed at the performance...
was playing left4dead earlier @ 16 x AA, 16 x AF and everything, all textures at full. Ran perfectly.
;)

I just picked up my MBP in mid-December and loved it initially. I was keen to get away from windows based computer and I believed that a MBP would be decent for gaming with the setup that it comes with. I was shocked though when I fired up my favorite game WOW and saw how crappy my framerates were and how friggin hot it got after playing for a half hour. I can get WOW to play better having installed SMC fan control and turning down my video settings but come on!!! I paid 3000.00 for this thing and I can't even play on full settings? I think the computer is awesome but this is not a gaming computer by any means. 95 degrees celsius without SMC fan control is way too hot. My first clue should have been a complete lack of any air vents to let the hot air out. Oh well, I havent given up yet. I am playing wow on lower settings for now and hoping that snow leopard has some sort of a fix for this.
Probably a good thing I got the extended warranty on this because I'm sure its gonna melt one day.

damn im playing half life 2 and my computer is reading 35 degrees, i dont see how you got it that hot

I am definitely not the only one check the forums. Tons of people are having overheating issues. Hell, I am just typing with no apps open and smc is showing my temp at 53 degrees Celsius with the fans spinning at 2000 rpm.

Yikes, that's messed up. My Geforce 4 from 2002 can run WoW at full settings (except AA off) and it looks fantastic. Even though the 8600 class parts are low end by today's standards, they should absolutely tear through WoW!

Uh...care to explain how in the world you are able to play left4dead with 16 x AA, 16 x AF and everything, all textures at full? Are you actually playing on native resolution (1440 x 900)?! I'm sorry but I don't believe there is any way you are playing at those settings. One of the reasons I say that is because I play left4dead at 1440x900 with everything on high but no AA or AF and my frames are around 30 fps in vista ultimate 64 bit.

Even the orange box which is from a few years ago isn't playable at 1440x900 with 16 x AA and 16 x AF and everything on high. AA and AF kill frames especially on a laptop. Sorry, I call ******** unless you are playing at some ridiculously low resolution which is useless anyways since it looks much better at higher resolutions and lower settings.

Please explain this further if I'm wrong and you are actually getting smooth frames at these settings or let me know what I should be doing to see this.

It wasn't advertised as a gaming machine at all. It was advertised as a powerful machine in a thin enclosure and with a 9600M GT. You should have done research on the 9600M GT card since that is the main thing for performance in games. A quick google search will show you the frame rates other people have with this card. Apple didn't surprise you with this card, and it was out for a few months before you bought it. If you don't know what you're buying and don't care to do research on it, you got what you deserve. Oh and Snow Leopard won't help you with gaming. Crank the fans to 6,000 before you play with smc fan control and maybe that will help. I also don't know if you're playing in osx or windows.

What's the problem then? Everything is able to run much hotter and be safe which is why the fans are at 2000 rpm at 53 celsius. Turn your fans to 6000 before you game, overheating gone. If you never checked the temp, you would never think about it. What are you doing that you're getting overheating issues? Are you referring to other posts/forums? Can you put up a link to it so other people can try and help or explain further what the problem is exactly?

Don't get me wrong, I love this new MBP. You were right when you said I did not do enough research before purchasing. I was reading more reviews from fanboy sites when I should have been reading forums like this.
The only reason I wrote here to begin with was after seeing posts like this...

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/624059/

I did go to the apple store a few times before making my purchase online. Both times I spoke to guys in the apple store they said there were no issues with heat on the new MBP and that gaming was great on them. Not that big of a problem now that I have SMC fancontrol. I always crank the fans rpms up to 6000 before I play wow.

As far as wow goes I found this thread to be very helpful...

Hopefully with some better patches from Blizzard, Nvidia, and Apple my game will play even smoother in OSX. :)

Thanks for reading...

I get the black screen issue when playing WAR even with the fans pre-set to 5000rpm. It's VERY frustrating and to be honest I'm not convinced at all it's a thermal thing. I have GPU-Z installed and dumping to a log and the 9600 never exceeds 75C. The black screen occurrences went UP when I installed the Nvidia beta drivers. I think I am going to try a different driver and see if it makes a difference.

Haha its not ********, i was amazed at it too
urmm any way i can prove it to you?
cause if i use fraps to record itll drop the framerate.
And yeah im playing at native res.
If you can find a way for me to prove it to you, i will :)
I also noticed you have 4GB RAM also, so yours should handle it!
also note that i am using xp home, alot of your power goes to running the OS.
But yeah, please tell me how i can prove it and i will :)

Also, is everyone using the term overheating properly? Cause yeah mine gets really hot, id expect it too!
Remember that most graphics card (or mine) in computers get too near 80 and still work fine. But you dont go around saying ahh my cards too hot to touch, because thats how hot it gets; just because its a laptop it does not mean it will stay cooler. It will get to the same temperatures as a desktop computer, its just cause you can feel how hot it is, it seems kinda worse. I have touched a graphics cad before when in a computer, and it toasted the end of my fingers! They dont stay really cool, and neither will the GPU in the mbp. The same way that the laptop can get a litle too hot to touch. if it gets to 80 while gaming, i wouldnt really call that OVERheating, its just getting hot which it does. When i play a game, the fans come on. I was playing left4dead for 3 hours last night, and yeah it got really hot. Simply stopped playing it when i felt like it, funs shut off, and it cools.
Alot of this i think is paranoia, because remember its a METAL laptop and so heat will conduct through the whole thing. Hell, even my keyboard starts getting pretty warm. Its nothing every other computer doesn't do!
As long is it can maintain the heat, then its fine - i would call anything over about 90 OVERheating, cause that really is too hot too touch and could start damaging stuff. I am assuming however that it does have thermal shutoff, in which if it gets too hot itll shut down due to risk of damage.

Hmmm, actually I never thought of this but does left4dead use directx 10? It's possible I could be running it on directx 10 and not realizing it. Since you're using XP that means it's running on directx 9 but still, 16x AA and 16 x AF on full screen with everything else on the highest? What are your average frame rates in the game?

Go to console ~ and type net_graph 1 then net_graphpos 2 and tell me the number. If it's 30fps or above I consider that "playable". If there's something you did that I didn't, I'd love to know if it will help :D

I'm running laptopvideo2go.com drivers 180.48 and crank smc fan control to 6,000 RPM's before I reboot into windows. If there was some other tweak you did, please let me know. Also did you overclock or anything like that? I also have everything updated through windows update and apple software update on both the windows side and osx.

I'm going to give the 180.48 drivers a shot tonight. I will let you know how it goes. Like I said I strongly think its a driver issue since my neither my CPU nor GPU temps exceed 75C during gaming.

It's about time someone disassembled their unibody MBP and replaced the thermal paste with AS5. I wouldn't be surprised if that makes a big difference.

Does 10.5.6 not correct the crashing issue?

I have returned my MBP, but it would crash under OS X playing wow, so was wondering if the recent firmware, SMC and OS X updates might have corrected this. If they have not, then the MBP has some serious issues. Though it seems some peoples systems are okay.

It would good to get two people with the same spec MBP, play the same game on the exact same settings. All we need is someone who says thier MBP is fine and someone who's is crashing. Just want to simulate the same conditions, cause the person who does not have their MBP crash might be running it under lower graphic load.

Any volunteers?

WOW or CD4 might be a good start

I got a MBP 2.53Ghz that was running 10.5.5. Everything seemed pretty good. I then upgraded to 10.5.6 and started having WoW freeze on me at random times the first couple of days, but hasn't done it since then.

Ok, so I downloaded the SMCFancontroller program and hopped into WoW and tried to stress it some. I left the SMCFancontroller with default settings to see what the machine did on it's own. The fan slowly throttled on its own. The hottest the card (GPU, not CPU) got was about 70°. The CPU got to 85°. This isn't too bad if you ask me. Kind of weird though why I got a few BSODs after the 10.5.6 update, but now they've stopped. Anyone have any ideas why this might be. I haven't gotten any updates since then...and I don't think WoW made any updates...so this is kinda weird.

nope, no tweaks, no nothing :)
just installed windows, updated it as per usual, and thats it.
No fan controls, new video drivers or anything.
Ill install fraps now and let you know how it goes with frames.
:D
