yea - i'm happy, but it still hurts a bit. I'll need a couple of days to get over it...the problem is that the new MBP's are so in my face..maybe i should stay off this board a little bit..:)

Haha! It's ok. Just be happy you still have your ExpressCard slot just in case you ever need it...for card readers, eSATA, audio interfaces, etc...

I have a 17" Unibody and I was really baffled when switching from my Early 2008 15" MBP.

For starters, the screen resolution is soooooooooo much better. Everything's so much more beautiful and refined.
When I'm looking at the 1440x900 screen, I'm like "say whaaat?!".

Color representation and contrast are waaaaay better as well.
My previous MBP was an LED screen as well.

Here's my screen:

Even I don't do any photo editing or what so ever, I prefer the HD screen.

FYI, HD-movies just look stunning on this screen.
Just DVDs are a bit crappy concidering the low resolution.

Anthony,

Can you do what bb714 did and post a screenshot of two webpages side by side. It would be a good comparison

Thanks - eV

He already did:

I already did :)

Check the link I provided.
If you want any more screens, just ask :)

I meant the exact same image as the other one. Can't seem to compare them at the moment. Thanks - eV

On first glance it does look like a HUGE difference. I think the 15" image has part of the webpage cut out.

so now we know the model number for the new MBP 13", which is 9C9F.
what about the new 15"? Anyone?
is the improvement in display noticeable?

Thanks mate. That's not bad at all. Quite usable. Could I trouble you to take a screen cap of a website and a document?

Anyone have a 17" MBP to show me a comparison?

(it's nice to see my avatar and post in the example btw :) )

i went from 1920x1200 to 1280x800, i'm dealing fine. exposé is really a lifesaver

Woah! Quite a drastic change!

I'm heading into the Apple store on Thursday to (hopefully) pick up my old machine. I'll do a comparison in person because I think that's the only way to decide.

I'll take some screen shots as well and post my thoughts here.

Thanks - eV

I just got back from the Apple store to help me decide and compare the screens. First off, in terms of quality they all looked good. The 17" is in a league of its own but I didn't see any drastic improvements in the 15. The 13" now looks as good as the 15" in terms of clarity etc but not as good as the MBA, in my opinion. I was focused more on the resolution.

Before I saw them in person I had convinced myself to get the 15" because it seemed more portable. To be honest, the difference isn't that great between the 15" and 17". If I could take the 15" around I can take the 17".

The main aspect for me was screen real estate. I've gotten used to having two Safari windows open next to each other or a browser and a Word document. I do a lot of research and writing and this helps me be more efficient. You can't do that on the 15". This is tough to describe without pics but ..

17": A full browser and a Word document fit next to each other with a little room to spare.

15": 25% of the browser was hidden behind the document

13" 40% of the browser was hidden behind the document.

This is a completely unscientific and subjective approach but it helped me compare.

My conclusion ... the 15" doesn't cut it for me. It's so close in size to the larger one that its not truly portable. The screen resolution is also too low. If my browser is going to be hidden anyway and I'll be using Expose/Spaces for my workflow, then I may as well drop down to the 13" or even the MacBook Air.

One more thing :) ... The 'lust factor'. I've realized I don't like the current designs. The black keys and border are generic and don't give me the same 'I wanna buy it' feeling that the old ones did. Keeping that in mind, the 15" is just too blah. Not sexy and portable, not thin and large. The 17" does have some lust factor. Its the thinnest 'large' laptop on the market and the screen is something else! On the other end - I don't like the 13" MBP either. The MBA is something that is unique.

That's my opinion. Keep in mind that my main consideration is the screen resolution. I haven't decided which way to go yet. All I know is that the 15" is out of consideration. It's either the 17" or one of the smaller ones. The 17" compared to my machine has an incredible screen that does make me want it. I might even keep my current machine. It's being overhauled by Apple and meets my needs. I like the old design. I also couldn't get used to the glass trackpad. It was too hard to push it!

For me, dropping from the 17 to the 15 isn't worth it. The slight difference in size and weight doesn't make it any more portable than the 17". It's going to feel cramped. If I'm going to have to get used to it anyway then I may as well go fully portable and get the 13" Others can chime in on the graphics card etc but that's not a deciding factor for me

Cheers,

eV

which store did you go too, seems kinda early for stores to already have the new models on display.

Santa Monica. They were in the process of setting them up and since I was there to pick up my MBP from Applecare, the manager let me play with them.

They got them Monday night BTW. Apple must have mailed them on Sunday. It's strange that there wasn't one single leak or rumor about the laptop line. Came right out of the blue!

There was a crazy rush in there which is why they couldn't put them out yesterday. To quote the manager "There have been a lot of p-ed off people here since Monday morning :) :). They're also expecting a shipment of 'new visuals' for the entire store. Wonder what its going to look like.

It's still a 6 bit panel, meaning it can only show 262,000 colours. Anything else is simulated by dithering. Would be nice if Apple would move to 8 bit panels, which can show 16.7 millions colours.
Actually, to be completely accurate LCD panels can display only three colors (red, green, blue). They all simulate more colors by allowing the eye to blend these colors into a wider range of color. In any case, as display pixel density increases and dithering methods improve the 6-bit panels are getting better day-by-day. I've read that very few notebooks use 8-bit panels. In fact, as far as I know 6-bit is pretty much the standard for notebooks.

impressed

Im a photographer with a 24 imac and always hated the macbooks and airs because of the bad dithering and 6 bit display. Just got the 13 today and this thing is tack sharp. i would almost swear it is 8 bit but based and the many different panel models ive seen for this model on here I am sure Apple did something with the dithering. Anyway the only thing I have seen that looks a tad better is the sony 8" OLED $2500 TV. Apple covered all my gripes with this model.

I had a BlackBook for about a year and half, and my parents bought me a UMB for college last week. I was really impressed with the screen and the viewing angles. Then they announced the updated 13" UMBP, and so I went to Best Buy yesterday to return the UMB so that I could exchange it.

They won't receive the new computers for a couple of days, so in the meantime I'm back on my BlackBook, and I just now appreciate how much better the screen was on the UMB. This screen just has very poor viewing angles and contrast. It's impossible to orient the screen to where the top half and the bottom half looks correct. I'm very excited that the new UMBP will have an even better display.
