Your welcome. Feel free to ask my questions I don't mind questions at all. People are curious and I understand that so I have no problem answering questions. Many people still don't understand the different levels of spinal cord injuries so often people get confused when they hear about a quadriplegic who has some of their arms and can do a lot for themselves and often I get asked questions like, "why are the guys from Murderball classified as quadriplegics if they can move their arms?" I explain to people and they find it easier to understand afterwards. I get asked a lot of questions of how I do stuff and what I need help with and don't mind answering those questions either even if they are really personal.

That's an inspiring way to handle it really. Shedding some light on it for people can only be a positive thing all around.

What are you studying in college?

I was injured in Wilmington, North Carolina during a vacation while visiting relatives. I had been surfing since I was 13 since I grew up in Florida and California.

Welcome to the boards! Hope you enjoy the community.

Sorry to hear about your accident. It happens here more often than people think. We just lost a young surfer around Surf City last month. :(

Thank you again for the welcomes.

I'm studying communications and professional writing in college.

Some days I try laughing at the fact that someone has to feed me and I even thought about having custom bibs made up.

Thanks for the clarification.

I met a woman with your exact condition. My local ALS support group were invited to her home, to see how it had been modified to work with, and for, her.

The system she used is/was called HAL 2000 (Home Assisted Living) together with a cell phone attached to her chair. She can lift a handled cup with one arm, but the shoulder motion is all she has.

She was happily married, and raising 2 boys, when a tractor-trailer pulled out in front of her one nice sunny day, and her car went under the trailer.

Her husband buggered-off, as some times happens with weak men, and she was left to raise her boys from her wheel-chair.

She was simply ****ing amazing, and a joy to meet.

Keep cyber-pitching. :D

Out of curiosity do you or loved one have ALS? When I was in rehab people with ALS and their families came to visit with some of the high quadriplegics and ventilator dependent quadriplegics to ask them questions about care management etc.

I was dating at the time of my accident and my boyfriend broke up me with a couple of months later I don't blame him for doing so and we still keep in contact here and there. I have met a few people who are paraplegics and quadriplegics who are also parents and they do a great job with their kids.

Jenna, I'd be interested in hearing a little more about how that works with your Mac. :) Is there custom software involved?

I use Synapse and Dragon Naturally Speaking software to run my MacBook. I also have a HP desktop that uses the PC versions to run that as well. I use a headset with a microphone to command the computers.

My Father contracted ALS in his 70's. He died 2 years later.

I have been involved with the local group for about 10 years now.

:)

I'm sorry to hear about your father. It's good that you are involved with the local group. I try to be involved with spinal cord injury groups and organizations as much as I can. One of the organizations I'm involved with also helps people with ALS.
