THERE WAS AN ACTRESS IN A COMMERCIAL!!!!
I've never heard of this before.... This changes everything... Am i an actor? Does God exists? Are puppies even cute any more? IM SO CONFUSED!!! DAMN YOU MICROSOFT!!

Oh come on, it's terrible!

I mean Apple would never stoop to using actors to advertise their products. They have that nice Mr Mac and Mr PC so they don't need to! ;)

I think its funny that this commercial caused such a huge discussion.

Do you think Apple will release a new commercial now that this one is out there?

I didn't see this mentioned in all the comparisons of well designed high end products and the cheaper alternatives. If you are young, you should consider the investment potential of that difference in price when comparing products, especially in this economic environment. When Lauren is 40, 50, or 60, that $2000. difference invested now will will be worth a ton more later. The same applies to her VW convertible and all the BMW's mentioned here, along with just about anything else you buy.

oh come on...

Here's the laptop she got for $700
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...+17+inch+laptop&type=product&id=1218041148373
It may be 17", but it's got poor resolution for the screen size, slower ram, questonable CPU, rubbish battery, 100Mb (not gigabit) ethernet, G wireless, shared graphics memory. Comes with Vista, the list goes on.

There's a reason it's cheap...

Agreed. If you look at the specs, it's very low-end generic notebook, even the low-end macbook (the $999 model) would out perform that in my opinion. Nice try with the clever commercial Microsoft, but you're not comparing apples to apples. pun.........intended! It's like saying if you like driving a lexus, come buy a Pontiac because it's cheaper and you'll still get where you need to go.

Anuba,

Maybe you are right, but I find the way they did the research little biased.

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/03/26/pc-to-mac-im-cheaper/

Even I would have bought the netbook and kept $600 for my self. But it doesn't mean netbook are better than macbook.
Oh, definitely biased... they're luring them straight into the Windows trap.

But in terms of "truth factor" on a scale of 1-10, where 1 is a blatantly staged and fabricated infomercial for an ab trainer and 10 is a raw and unedited documentary, I have to give this one at least a 3. While it was rigged to a point, they were at least real people looking to buy computers.

Easier on the wallet

One article linked here earlier stated that PC's are easier on the wallet. That's funny seeing as how that message is coming from a software company that charges $400 for their flagship OS. Now I am a PC user, I've not gotten a mac YET. I believe OSX is under $200. Interesting. Also, I've never bought one of those $300 dollar PC or laptop type machines. I haven't gotten a mac as I stated, but I built my own PC myself to my specs. $1800 dollars later. I'm not trying to say it's better than a mac, so keep your panties from getting wrinkled fanboys. All I'm saying is, it will well outperform those CHEAP pc's people buy in best buy.

Ok if it was done in the guise of 'Marketing Research' where is the footage of the ones that chose to go for a Mac? I would hazard a guess at least one of the unwitting respondents would have had a hankering for one!

I would imagine the criteria given to them would be loaded to make it almost impossible for them to chose a Mac.

For example, buy a 17" laptop for less than $1000. ;)

Right, but as far as Microsoft are concerned, *their* product is the same whether you buy a Pontiac PC or a Lexus PC. Their interest lies in a maximum number of Windows PCs sold. And they're selling software to Mac users too (Windows for BootCamp, Office 2008 etc) so it's not like they're crying every time someone buys a Mac. In your metaphor, they sell the gasoline, not the car, for all they care you can get any damn Pontiac or Lexus you want as long as it's not one of those electric cars that excludes them from sellling their product to you.

They also have a gaming division (selling games to BootCampers and others) and a hardware division (some Mac users seem to prefer their mice over the quirky soap bar that Apple offers) so they still make money off people even after they switched to Mac.

I would imagine the criteria given to them would be loaded to make it almost impossible for them to chose a Mac.

Yeah, but some of them were given a budget of $2000, though (the span was $700-2000). That would buy you anything from the white low-end MacBook to an MBP 15" 2.4 for $1999.

I just found this cartoon on 9to5mac.com
Just good for a laugh. :D

Obviously the correct choice is to buy the PC, then wipe the hard drive and dual boot OS X and Linux.

Perhaps they were asked to buy a matte screened laptop for less than $2000. :D
;)

Since they were told they could keep the surplus I doubt that any of them blew it all on the computer. That's another nice trick they did, since the viewer will first assume that $2000 is the appropriate budget for a laptop and adjust their thinking to that, but then the buyer finds one for "only" $1500 (and buys booze for the rest when the cameras are off) and suddenly it looks like a bargain.

Even with $1000 you couldnt get the white macbook after taxes.

If it's 6% tax and $949 for the MB. I would have gladly paid $6 out of pocket (Total $1,006) for a nice new White MB. :p

Fact Checking

Yeah, except BMW doesn't cheat by manufacturing their cars in China for peanut money.

Except for the inconvenient little fact that they've been doing exactly that.

Specifically, the BMW 3-Series and 5-Series has been produced in several countries, including a factory in Shenyang, China since May, 2004. Until the downturn, they were producing roughly 30,000 cars per year, and were looking to build a second plant to make the 1-Series.

Would you pay the premium for a BMW made by Brilliant?

Ironically, guess who has been BMW's partner in Shenyang since 2004?

And even back home, its long been known that while some factories may still be located in Der Fatherland, the workers are often from Turkey and Eastern Europe...lower wages/benefits.

BTW, as I mentioned this past weekend, the pricing did get released for some of new Dells using the Nehalem Xeons...

I'll freely admit that the Dell PowerEdge T610 Server isn't the best machine to compare to the Mac Pro (no video card options), but it passes the "Not Vaporware Test".

When quickly looking through the Dell to effectively match hardware features to the $2499 MP, the Dell comes in at $2,957 ($458 higher), and to the $3299 MP, the Dell is $3,226 ($73 lower).

However, in both cases, it should be noted that neither Dell configuration comes with any OS. Using NewEgg's current price for an OEM copy of Vista 64 bit Ultimate ($180), this suggests that both Mac configurations are less expensive than the Dells, by roughly $100 (3%) to $600 (24%).

This concludes this update to the "Apple Tax" subthread claims.

When was the last time you paid $400 for Windows?

But you failed to mention the
3Yr Basic Hardware Warranty2 Repair: 5x10 HW-Only, 5x10 NBD Onsite3yr warranty included. NBD Onsite does apple offer that?

OK, then OSX is not a true operating system, because it's a GUI layer on top of Darwin.

OS X is a OS distribution, like Ubuntu. Darwin is the kernel, Quartz is the GUI engine, Finder is the GUI itself. Basically, nowadays, a distribution is a OS, since a OS is composed of many different parts beyond just the kernel (which doesn't do much on its own).

Windows 95 was a program, called win.com. It loaded after DOS ver 7.0 had gone through msdos.sys, config.sys and autoexec.bat and it was started automatically (it could be stopped with a break).

It's not an OS per say, it doesn't have a kernel that's running directly on top of the hardware. It's basically a 32bit DOS extender like 4GW was that offered protected mode access.

Saying the Windows 95 family are OSes is like saying MacOS Classic could do multi-tasking. It's not quite true.

I remember being at Best Buy and seeing their highest end version being around that price. Thats the cost of Windows when not subsidized in the cost of a computer.

I've always thought their software prices were absurd, especially for office. Thank god for the open source movement.
