you need virus protection, but with some decent paid software, i have NEVER run into any malware problems on windows. if anybody does, they're either messing with things they shouldn't (downloads) or just stupid IMHO.

Agreed,

plus if I need it there are many free options

What Microsoft fails to realize is that you can't compare these two products. They are misleading the public to believe that this woman has found a similar computer for less. It's like going to a Porsche dealership with $20,000 and thinking you can drive away with a 911 Carrera, not going to happen. Another component that is not seen is customer service. You will never get the care provided at the Apple store anywhere else, let alone from a geek squad! How many Mac's have you seen at their place waiting to get fixed? Bottom line you get what you pay for, good luck with the add guys... sticks and stones love!:apple:

Yeah I agree comparing a MBP 17" to the HP 17" is "your car analogy." But the point is apple doesn't even offer a computer under $1000, let alone a 17" and they mentioned that in the ad. The MB is at around $1K and has a 13" screen is the quote I believe.

The commercial is what Apple has to offer vs. what PC has to offer. And obviously they offer more choices, thats their game, let consumer buy what they want. Apple likes to tell you what you want and then hands you a MB. Slightly different styles of sales. Look at Dell, they just let you assemble a computer to whatever specs you want, though you may not even know what's the most appropriate specs for your situation. Apple just avoids that and has their staff explain to you what you should buy.

+1

The people talking about Windows blue screens and constant reformatting of drives are probably:
  • People who haven't looked at Windows since Windows 95
  • or people who download all their porn as .exe files

Im not bashing people like you. You have a legitimate reason for spending 2x the market standard for hardware. Some guys here feel they need to defend their mac like they will explode into a ball of fire if they cant rationalize spending so much money.
The point the commercial is trying to make is 100% valid. Macs cost more. Sure, your BMW costs more, but you bought it because you wanted the extras that came with it compared to a Focus. This doesnt mean the Focus is a worthless piece of junk, it just means it doesnt work for you as well as the BMW. Some apple fanboys here have to call all non-mac computers junk so they can rationalize it in their mind. You dont have to call anthing junk because you actually have a reason for using a mac other than the "omg its shiny" factor that so many sheep follow.

All right, cool: I respect your opinion and you are very entitled to it. For the record, I would not consider a computer "junk" because it was not made by Apple. Apple layed a complete egg with the iBook G4 and all its graphic card problems. THAT, I would call junk.

My point is that I have been buying Macs since I was 14. And I have always done my research... there are two things in life that are always true: others will treat you as you treat them, and you get what you pay for.

Not everything Apple, or other "premium brands" make is the best product for the money, but that is where we, the public, have a say. I did not buy my MacBook Pro because it was "sexy" I bought it because judging by past history it was my best choice.

Now, and I am very truthful here: I find Windows uninspiring: always have: not unintuitive, or difficult to navigate, simply: it does not inspire me. Mac OS 9 was not much better, but OS X really raised the bar: it fits me.

Same thing with a car: I spend a lot of time in it... my Macs and my car take up a lot of my waking time while I earn a living: why not have–what I perceive judging from past experiences–the best quality?

And as a concession, I do visit Windows from time to time. My girlfriend has a new HP Pavillion with Vista. Despite it's make-over, it is still uninspiring, buggy, and unstable. She seems to get along fine with it, but I know it is not the product for me because I am aware of a different product that DOES feel natural to me...

Then again, her Chevy Prizm also feels unnatural to me... you get what you pay for: ultimately computing is an investment: of resources, time and energy. Think about it: although computers are playing a bigger role in our entertainment, they are still tools for work and productivity. Windows and PC's, for me, are counter-intuitive for MY creativity.

Some people require more. To me, Windows and PC's are as bland as cardboard and as inspiring as a Dodge Dart hubcap. But that's just me... Apple computers have been such a huge part of my artistic process and career that I can't imagine not having one around... trust me, I was ******** bricks back in '97 when they were on the brink of going under. But they didn't, and I have remained Windows-free for another decade.

What do we know about IBM products? probably nothing, Yet they make much more money than apple. They understand what people want.

They do? I've been using thinkpads for years and find it hard to consider anything else, but they still don't have my idea of a perfect machine.

They also sell tonnes of proprietary gear, and similar to apple, absolutely love and strive towards 100% vendor lock in. Huge service contracts, (pointless? but vital?) business software suites etcetcetc. They may be a hugely successful company, doesn't mean they're any good or 'know what people want' - Unfortunately most IT buying, consumer or business don't either :) +arrogance

"Lauren" (if that is her real name) didn't really go into the Apple store...or Crispin Porter had a bunch of extras walking around during the filming.

How do we know? Notice at 0:13 when she walks into the store, there is a balding guy with jacket and striped shirt and camera walking by. He is still walking by when she leaves the store filmed on the other camera. That gave her less than a second in the store. She said she walked in and looked around but how could this be?.

Based on the prices listed on the Apple website: if you were to walk into an Apple store where you frequently get greeted within about 2 steps of entering the store, and tell them that you have a budget of $700-1000 the only thing they can offer you in the store assuming they have one in stock is the the absolute base model 13" MacBook for $999, doesn't leave much room for anything else you might want, so I could see it being a very quick discussion.

1. How come none of you have compared the customer service of Apple to any PC provider? Consumer Report clearly state Apple is far superior to any other in customer satisfaction.

Needing customer service is potentially an indication you are having problems and according to some you never have issues with any Apple product.

The point is MS is saying these are all real people and real shopping experiences.

Their first commercial is of an actress (ie: not a REAL person)

I am sure all the aspiring actors in the world love to hear that, just because her career ambition is being an actress does not make her any less of a real person. Now, maybe if you had said she was a fake person because she lived in L.A. ........

Oh. And as far as the ad:

It does not matter. We may be going through tough economic times but people who just want a computer will buy the Dell, Asus, HP, build their own, whatever. People who WANT a Mac will find a way to afford it. People who use Macs in our every day work will upgrade when the time is right.

I believe this ad will not sell more licenses for Microsoft. It is just "reminding" consumers to keep the status quo and buy a PC so their sales won't go down: as in, "BUY A PC! We're Cheap!"

Could you imagine if KIA tried the same crap with BMW? Anyone who knew anything about cars would laugh their ass off.

My main stance is this: Some people prefer Windows, some Linux, some OS X. Some people are happy with their cheap PC's with Windows. Let them be, and try not to make snide comments of which this thread would be empty without.

Yes, and the ones that prefer Macs like to congregate in forums designed for Mac fans and laugh at the other OSes - kinda like we do here:rolleyes: There are plenty of sites for Windows fans to gather and there are sites for Linux fans to gather. If you want neutrality, you probably ought to turn off the computer and check out real life, for that is where people that don't care about their OS tend to gather. It can actually be quite relaxing.

Kind of lame to take advantage of the down economy like that. I doubt it will work, though. Microsoft advertising never seems to have much of an impact on their sales.

You kidding right???? Outside of the US Apple has increased thier prices by 20-30% due to ecomonic/exhange reasons and that is okay?

Who is lame again?

Slightly different styles of sales. Look at Dell, they just let you assemble a computer to whatever specs you want, though you may not even know what's the most appropriate specs for your situation. Apple just avoids that and has their staff explain to you what you should buy.

Exactly! I think that the Apple model is doomed to always be second best. And thus always be vulnerable to the market. As the generations progress more and more people are becoming computer savvy and with knowing more about computers comes having a more detailed opinion on what you want as a consumer.

Im not a programmer so Ive got no clue if its possible. BUT.. There would be great success for a company that offered an install CD that I could run on any laptop or computer that would prep it so I could just pop in my OS X install cd and install my copy of OS X on it.

Infact, Apple could offer it. Like offering OS X for Apple at a cheaper price and OS X for all other newer PCs that was price matched at the most expensive version of Microsoft window.

I think these will be more effective than that horrible seinfeld ad.

Competition is good :)

Apple should release an follow-up to the commercial that shows her dragging PC back to Best Buy April 1st due to a virus :). PC could be doing some humiliating acts while she is at the counter.

Then have the Best Buy Geek Squad tech guy arguing with her on the cost to diag it then stating she should have bought MAC if she didn't want these issues.

It is a smart piece of advertising, it targets "most" people who wouldn't want to spend extra for quality. The 17 in screen bit is a perfect example. Most uniformed consumers wouldn't bother noticing that it isn't a high quality screen, they just see the size and price and that's enough for them.

I think those people should save their money and buy pc's, let them save money now but toss the computer in a few years because it's out dated or re-install their operating system at least once year from the viruses it will catch.

I have been perfectly happy owning macs even though they have such a small market share. It's been a great experience, using a computer that isn't popular enough for people to focus their time writing viruses for.

The simple truth is that buying a mac is like buying a luxury car, you don't do it for the value. You buy it because of the quality and there is always a premium on quality. Not everyone should own a luxury car and not everyone should own a mac. You can't think a mac is for everyone.

Sure, a PC generally costs less...at first. Then start adding in the cost of down time and constant troubleshooting, dealing with viruses, crashes, hassles with printer drivers and more—

You sound like the typical Mac user that regurgitates what is fed to them through Apple's ads and forums.

Are PCs more prone to being with viruses at times? Yes, but if you have half a brain (and I am assuming a decent number of people on this forum do), you know it's NOT HARD to protect your computer from viruses and trojans and the like.

That ad fails at so many levels. Is this the third campaign attempt by Crispin Porter + Bogusky? You'd think that CP+B is either purposefully sabotaging MS or, as creatives who live by Macs, they just can't come up with a good thing to say about their client's product.

Even if it was done intentionally or whatever else, the mere fact that she went into the Apple store FIRST speaks volumes. People don't follow crap. I mean, Windows is the exception ;), but if apple seriously sucked they would be out of business.

Are some of you going to sit here and tell me that a company that rips off its customers , has shoddy services and products is going to be sitting on 19.4 Billion dollars in the bank? I wasn't forced into going into the apple store, and neither was this lady. The allure that Apple has created around their products, admittedly with the artifically high price tag (although I could itemize the extras included that make the price worth it), has allowed apple to keep the masses out while indulging those are fortunate enough to spring for the additional cost or have a legitimate need for OS X.

Lauren, I hope you enjoy your purchase. Hopefully you will be able to find a variety of skins, products , support groups and a sense of community for your new HP Pavilion 92819XZuMediaExtremewhichamacallit.

People who WANT a Mac will find a way to afford it.

My mum wants a mac (she likes the look of them), but can't afford one. She's fine with an old t20 I gave her years ago though.

ps. Enough with the car comparisons (unless you really want to compare perceived quality and value - not just spouting the 'german cars are amazing' cliche) :) No one that 'knows about cars' (and pcs?) is close to laughing.

That lady just like go to Mcdonalds and pick up a value pick meal and said I pay less for a meal which exactly same as the big-mac meal, cus they all have sandwich, fries and drink :D

Mac - PC ads did use a stereotype, but what they are using is quite true for me and it is the fact which no doubt about it. But that Microsoft ads, they used stereotype and cutting the edge at the same thing, which I think they are cheating.

It's amazing the crapstorm this has created on the internet. The whole Mac community is in an uproar lol...

We really had it coming for a while people. The Mac ads were just too hurtful...too much therapy...to much VISTA.

It's all been said and done before though.
