At MacExpo London 2001 one of the stands had a PowerbookG3 that was put in a case like that, totally flat, it was exactly the same (Apart it was bigger)

This is the same thing, its just a flatterned out Newton.

It's an OMP

Anyone who has used or seen a MessagePad 100 would recognize that screen setup any day. That's what it is-a disassembled OMP. By the way the copyright on the software is 1992-1994 from Newton and Sharp.

The newton...oh what an awesome machine. If only it was smaller, and maybe an iBook type colour.

despite advertising this as the new newton... I really enjoyed these pictures..

I was a big-time Newton collector... ( http://www.normalkid.com/collector ) - and have every newton/clone made except the Tarpon, and the Harris Access Device 2000.

I even had two prototype Newtons: Beta Newton Notepad - which is what the Newton Messagepad was called before a name change... as well as a beta Sharp Expertpad.

This unit is indeed a score...

I believe I recognize this but it has been a few years.

IMHO......It looks to me like a Newton MessagePad screen on the logic board of an eMate, making it perhaps an eMate prototype or a post eMate Franken-pad

What leads me to say this is that many parts of this board correspong to ports on the eMate such as:
1. The size and shape the logic board are consistant with several eMate features including:
2. The location of the serial port (I can't tell from the pictures if the IRDA port is present or not)
3. The location of the PCMCIA Slot
4. The large empty space behind the "*****ula" containing the serial port would correpsong to the large battery that the eMate used.
5. The speaker assembly & location

The way the screen is on the board is 180° from how it would sit inside an eMate.

No.. you're trying to make too much of it...

it's an early Newton Messagepad (original) prototype. It's running a beta Newton OS 1.0

Well thank God arn recognizes what it really is! You saved me a long-winded debunking speech. :D

I suggest if any of you guys thought this was a new prototype you buy an old MP and spend some time getting to know 5+ year old technology so you can recognize it in its exploded form.

Hmm.. Maybe there we should have (or find and link to) a Newton museum we can send people to so this doesn't keep happening.
