I've been out of the challenges for a LONG time, but I'm getting back into running. A new Polar RS400 HRM is helping make sure I don't keel over.
I injured my knee last time and never really went back. I'm up to 4.5 miles on a treadmill. I know that's not the same thing as running on the street, but it gives me the confidence to start back on the street without hurting myself.
glad to hear you're getting healthy again. injuries can be very frustrating. i'd had my share. but you know the saying, "you gotta get back on the horse"
I think my knee injury was the result of 'too much, too fast'. I started off slower and on a treadmill and am slowly translating that into running on the street.
I can do 4+ miles without stopping on the treadmill....that figures to about 3 miles on the street with a walk or two thrown in. My pace is off and there are hills in the real world that apparently are missing from the treadmill!!!

yeah, i try to stay away from the treadmill as much as possible. even if you have to slow your pace, and even run less, it's better to run outside than on a treadmill.
but also keep in mind that running on pavement (concrete or asphault) is bad on your legs. running on some short of trail, dirt, grass, etc is much better for you. even a track is better than straight pavement.
I know. I have a track nearby that I try and run on, but the view gets boring.....so I take to the neighborhood streets. My legs and joints can handle the street now better than they ever could before. The first time I started running, I took right to the street from the couch. (I was doing the couch-to-5K program) My weight and inexperience was a bad combo.
Now, my legs are in MUCH better shape, so it's mostly a mental battle now. That's what the HRM is for.
I'm getting there slowly but surely.
