Thanks guys, this thread solved a lot of questions I had.
But still, to triple confirm, using an unflashed 980, what about CUDA and the support for professional applications like After Effects / Davinci Resolve? I do a lot of post production / color grading work. Will they be able to use CUDA properly with the right driver setup? Some people noted that they wouldn't start up with an unflashed card, even with the proper drivers. Any experience there?
And what about PCIe 1 vs PCIe 2 in that case? Will that have any influence on the performance of those progs? For games the advantage seemd rather slim.
And another thing about dual setups. I'm currently running a Quadro 4000 for Mac and would like to keep on using it as a display card and the new GTX 980 as a GPU card (with external PSU).
The Quadro 4000 for Mac is obviously working well under OSX and Boot Camp.
Would you agree on that setup? Would I then see a boot screen using the Quadro for Mac as a display card?
Would there be any noticable gain in performance in your eyes to justify the hassle with an external PSU etc? On a windows machine in our office we use a Quadro as a display card and a Titan as GPU and both seem to add up in terms of perfomance. Not sure to which extend though...
Nevertheless, I can totally see the advantages in a MVC flashed 980 but I wouldn't be teased to explore the unflashed option that much if I wouldn't be living in Europe which means I will have to pay 300$ for import taxes and shipping on top of the card... Apart from that, great work MVC and if I'd be in the US I guess I wouldn't think twice getting a properly flashed one.

Hey Ash, I'm running Premiere and AE CC 2014 with an unflashed 980 right now on my Mac Pro 5,1. CUDA, OpenCL, everything is working flawlessly. It's in slot 1 right now and I have a GT120 in slot 3 which does display the boot screen so I would anticipate the same for your setup. So far it's been great.
It's important to note that I had to reinstall both web drivers and CUDA drivers after installation to get it working right, but at least if you have web drivers installed beforehand you will see the desktop.

Though I was still a bit unsure about this whole operation when I wrote my last post a month ago I gave it a try and yes, as you say, it seems to work well. AE and Resolve like the GTX a lot. 🙂

I get a welcome screen with the monitors attached to the Quadro.
Installed boot camp and it seems to work fine too.
On OSX I'm running the 343.02 web driver and the 6.5.46 CUDA driver. Didn't have to install the twice though.

Benchmarks show good results on both platforms. Will post some screenshots soon. Obviously not top peak but good enough. Considering the hardware and software limitations that come with a 5.1 MacPro (PCIe 2, etc.) or the the unflashed card, I'm quite aware that the system is probably getting the most out of that upgrade (same applies to HDD / SSD upgrades, etc.) compared to newer PCs or MacPros, but I guess the benefit is still substancial and can still be seen as a very good life extending measure for the equipment one already owns, especially in relation to the costs...

Ive got the same card as you have - Gigabyte gtx 970 gaming, but after installing latest NVIDIA drivers, then shutting down, installing the card and powering computer up it shows only black screen. How did you managed to run the card? Mac Pro 4.1-5.1 yosemite 10.10.2

I have 2 6pin cables, but the card requires 1 6pin and one 8pin, I inserted 6pin into 8pin. Windforce logo does light up and everything is spinning. I actually downgraded to 10.10.1 and installed 10.10.1 nvidia drivers with no success. Do you think thats because of the cables? I ordered 6 to 8 pin convertor already.

It came with one 6 pin and one 8 pin cable, both for windows. Does it makes any difference if I use 6pin cable or 8pin convertor? It is still 75W
So my adapter came in, I installed it, everythings running, but the thing is, its not faster that my GTX560, lags are still there (itunes scrolling) Cinebench showed 43 fps while my 560 was showing around 49. Not sure what it is, maybe I should enable some opengl, cl or cuda? Not sure what they are for! Any suggestions appreciated 🙂
No, no chance. Nvidia's web drivers abandon older OSes almost immediately. If there's no ML web driver with Maxwell support now, there never will be.

All the web drivers from nVidia I have tried will not install on Yosemite 10.10.3.

Nvidia webdriver 346.01.02f04 is the latest one. It works just fine with my 970 in my 4.1 -> 5.1 cMP.
