But on O2 refresh I paid £200 up front (6 plus 128GB) and have been paying £50 a month which is £25 for phone and £25 for airtime including 20GB data. Now I want to upgrade I need to pay £300 off to upgrade a year early. I'm selling my phone for at least £465 which pays the £300 and puts £165 against the new phone (so if the same as last year, it costs me only £35), and then the cycle starts again. So really, what you suggest isn't any better (adjusting for different phone model between you and I) unless I'm missing something?

No I'm saying it's really good haha but the best way is still buying sim free from Apple and getting a three sim with unlimited data for 15 p/m. I was just explaining how the o2 refresh works and it was aimed at the quoted poster.

I love refresh, I'm doing a refresh for the 6s too :)

The most cost efficient way if you want to upgrade every year is to just buy a iPhone outright and use sim-only. My contract is 42 a month and it's 5GB and an iPhone 6 (64GB) and I only have to pay off 240 pounds now after paying 42 a month for the last year. Selling the iPhone to a family member for around 300 will let me pay off my contract and start anew, but I invested 149.99 at the start so the fee in this case is around 100 for the device. If you want to upgrade every year, then I don't see a problem and it's the next best thing to buying a unlocked device upfront every year.

TLDR; Once you pay off the remaining balance on your handset tariff (which you can do whenever) you will own the device. You can do this from month one or month 12 or just wait until the contract expires like normal and upgrade. The device will end up being yours.

See I calculated doing this and I actually didn't factor resale value into this, so if I take the device out on my interest free credit card at £789 for a 128GB IPhone 6+ this if I calculate that resale value is £400 at 12 months - not massively sure of the resale value my phones always look a bit abused by this point no point pretending it will be pristine.

This would be £32.40 per month for 12 months + 4GB of Data at £19.54 making a total of £51.94 per month

Anything glaring I have missed here? This could be my way forward

How is 3 signal coverage in your area. I would contemplate getting a three sim and try looking after you device a little better and get around 450 for it after a year which works out at 42.50 (15 p/m for carrier, 27.50 p/m for phone).

Much cheaper and unlimited 4G data. If anything even swapping down to the 64GB unless you really need 128GB. Could be another choice. :)

I don't think 3 do the £15 a month sim now :( seems to be up to £17.

They have also removed the 3 option from the Apple website.

Unfortunately Three used to be the best signal in my area, I live in North West Highlands of Scotland and Three were the only people to offer 3G however the mast is now overloaded and it has been poor for about 6 months.

So I am leaving them to go to O2 who now offer 4G in town

If you know anyone, or indeed qualify yourself for the Vodafone friends and family discount (20% off line rental) through their Employee Advantage scheme - then this makes Vodafone potentially the cheapest option assuming they will continue to offer 12 month contracts.....

e.g. 128GB sim free from apple £699 + three plan (8GB data, unlimited minutes) £24 x 12 = £987

Vodafone (unlimited mins, 8GB data) - £309 for handset + £64 less 20% x 12 = £923.4

AND....... if you are already (or intending to become) a Spotify premium subscriber, this is included on Vodafone for 12 months so saves another £120 - meaning the net cost is actually £803!!

and even if you went for the £17 a month three plan..... Voda would still be £100 cheaper overall!

n.b. this assumes Voda pricing is same as on iPhone 6 - which should be a pretty safe assumption

If you don't care too much about 4G, go for these:
https://www.thepeoplesoperator.com/pay-monthly#featured-plan

Uses EE masts and the first two months is something like 3.99.

Here's a good Vodafone deal sim only deal: 4GB 4G: https://www.secure-mobiles.com/chec...O2I6MDt9&_ga=1.46504231.1650147522.1441976549

I was just in town and went into O2 and the guy spouted off about the 30GB deal, but no prices yet and no idea when prices will be announced.

One thing that did come up is that with the 30GB tariff with the "we pay your early termination fee and allow you to upgrade after a year if you trade in your phone" deal is that you have to give them your old phone. Now this may not bother most people but if you take into account my current situation/contract ... I need to pay £300 to terminate and get an upgrade, but I'm selling my 6 plus to envirofone for £467. So, you could lose money just giving your phone to O2.

Apparently they're out today, saw an article but can't be bothered to find where I saw it, but they could be sprouting crap :') I'd say that tariff be quite expensive, at least £65.

Totally agree - this new plan seems like a con to me to try get users to take out a more expensive line rental plan. The fact is that the phone will be worth more than the settlement amount after 12 months on any refresh plan....... so the new offer is irrelevant.

TBH with the insurance added to mine (which would be free on that deal) and 20GB I'm paying 37 + 25 anyway

The issue I have is that I want to keep a large amount of data on my O2 deal because I want to get the missus on a sharer SIM in December, along with our iPads.

I think some people, not everyone mind will be happy at O2 buying their phone back to get a new phone without having to sell a phone through eBay etc as people lose selling fees etc through that (Granted not everyone uses that method but a lot will). It will be interesting to see what the upfront costs will be with this plan, and also what they plan on charging for the next generation of phone.

The annoying thing is that I'd be happy to stump up the £300 to O2 to pay off my handset, but keep my current Airtime contract going. I'd then just sell my current handset to pay off the £300 and put the rest towards the phone from Apple, on my 0% C/C. It's a bummer that paying off the handset cancels both the handset and the Airtime.

Where I am the masts are a Three/EE sharing arrangement so that is out for me as well.

I will look at the Vodafone Sim Only deal as they have partnered with O2 to provide 4G where I am

I'm with three

coverage here is awesome

My strategy for tomorrow if O2 haven't release their tariffs before 8:00 tomorrow....

Order iPhone direct from Apple @ 8:01 tomorrow morning.
Check out O2 tariffs and if any good do upgrade @ 9:00, cancel Apple order.
If O2 tariffs are crap, don't upgrade and stick with Apple order.
