There both 3.5" screens and look identical.

???? the claim was selling a 3.5 one along with the new 4+ one so thats why i said they'll just keep selling the 4S in a 8GB edition like they always do. no need to make a brand new looking 3.5 phone AND a new 4+ phone

That is the camera hole and there is no prox sensor in ipod touch.

They showed iOS 5 without a new iPhone. iOS is made for applications to scale easily vertically due to multitasking tray. It shouldn't be that hard to adapt.

Yes they did, but lets say they want to release larger screen. Its a much different scenario.

This is a tough step for them. I see iOS as a more vertical operating system. Meaning apps like Twitter, Facebook, MLB they are require more vertical real estate than horizontal. iOS has never and will never be involved in complicated widgets that use a lot of screen real estate. I see the vertical change rather than a horizontal one.

So pretty much if apple doesn't announce the screen size at WWDC we should expect the same size screen as we have? If apple announces the screen size there's going to be a lot of people holding out from getting the 4s, won't they lose $?

What I don't understand is that everyone is assuming iOS 6 will be shown in the summer, but why would they show iOS 6 with no new iPhone. They are definetely going to want to take advantage of the screen real estate in the new OS. It all doesn't add up to me.

iOS is usually shown several months in advance of the new iPhone model to allow developers time to implement new features ahead of the OS and device launches.

Implementing support for a screen size you don't have will be difficult. The simulator will help, but it is just not the same. It will be interesting to see how Apple deal with it.

Developers only had a couple of weeks after the confirmation of the retina iPad screen size before launch.

It is quite different, but it is not devastating to the developers either. They shouldn't have to scale any of their elements, just account for more usable room. When I think of most of the apps I use that aren't games, I don't see any big issues.

Here we go folks... get your seat belts on.

You know, I almost want to avoid the tech sites not to ruin the surprise.

Yeah, and even for games, I bet Apple is ok with some of them being pillar-boxed for a few weeks. It's not like they'll look horrible. They'll look the same as they do now, actually!

So I can certainly see Apple springing this on devs at the last minute and letting them figure it out after the new phone comes out.

I mean, if anyone still doubts this, look at the iPad. How many developers got advanced knowledge of that screen size? They all had to play catch up after the fact and Apple was fine with that.

Wouldn't it be more difficult and longer time to change from a smaller screen to a larger screen then changing from 2nd gen iPad screen to the retina screen hence there both the same size screens on the iPad.

They could release the iPod touch at WWDC and then developers can make apps for it and then in October release a new iPhone with a 4" screen that can run all the new iPod touch apps then they don't damage current iPhone sales! While at the same time increasing iPod sales by an enormous amount!
