iPhone 6!!

GUISE,

I just received this photo that my connection at Foxconn took of the iPhone 6!

is it just me or does the black look shorter/wider then the white one??

The black photo is simply the backside of the white front. You can tell from the white edges and the parts numbers stamped on it.

Fragmentation is still not as bad as Android.

Android's actually not that bad. There's only a handful of popular sizes and resolutions.

Why doesn't Apple just make two sizes or even three different sized phones.

They will, but they won't all be new. Predictions are that they'll continue to see the 3GS, 4, 4S, along with the new iPhone... and that the 3GS will drop below $300... perhaps even down to $250... to fight Android and WP phones around the world.

What I don't understand is that everyone is assuming iOS 6 will be shown in the summer, but why would they show iOS 6 with no new iPhone. They are definetely going to want to take advantage of the screen real estate in the new OS. It all doesn't add up to me.

Apple always releases the new GM seed of the OS when the new phone is released. The betas are seeded months prior to work out the bugs and to help the developers get ready. Last year the preview for iOS 5 happened during WWDC, with beta 1 being released that day. The same will happen this year. The only reason iOS 4 and earlier came out in June with the phone is because they released the betas earlier in the spring. If the betas are not out, then the phone will not come out. There has never been an exception to this rule. Only when the betas came out, but not the fact that they ALWAYS come out months before the new phone/final OS release

A dollar says they keep the same retina resolution on a larger screen and just make it brighter....because 98% of consumers can't tell the difference.

I can't be the only person who sees this redesign as aesthetically subpar.

Nope you are not alone. :p

I was just saying that if all they are doing is making it taller, iOS 6 has to really got to knock my socks off in order to stick with iPhone.

One of the big things stopping me currently was that i have invested money in accessories that work with the 30 pin connector. If they truly do make it smaller/different, then there goes one of my BIG reasons of not moving to another OS

Although my upgrade isn't till June 2013, but still, they better bring it with iOS 6

From someone who designs apps on the iPhone, I can tell you that there is just as much need for more width as there is for additional height. Apple is a sharp company that designs products that are ergonomically right. While I don't agree that the next iPhone will be 4.5" – I think it makes sense that Apple increases the screen size to allow for more available design space in applications. If it happens, I would expect the width to increase proportionally with the height.

there is a paradox: Should the home button be in the shape of rectangle instead of circle as previous rumors claimed?

I remember, when iPhone4 parts started to leak, and especially after the Gizmodo pictures, a lot of people dismissed the newer design. I didn't like it too much either at the time. Now it is a standard.

I don't like the idea of a taller screen but who knows what the real thing will feel like once people start interacting with it.

I just had another thought;

The taller aspect ratio is 16:9 same as a wide screen tv. Maybe it has something to do with the iTV. Maybe it is somehow tied. I know it is a stretch but who knows.

Gizmodo posted a convincing article on the topic:

Why the Next iPhone Won’t Be 16:9
I remember reading an article from Gizmodo titled "Why there won't be a Verizon iPhone" or something like that. Good times.

So you believe the new iPhone will be 16:9.

Can you provide some specific counterarguments to those presented in the Gizmodo article.

Battery impact

But let's keep on going with this scenario and assume Apple's suppliers can secretly produce a 367ppi, 4-inch 720p 16:9 display by shredding virgin unicorn ponies and compressing them inside their secret artificial black hole. What will be the cost in terms of battery life? As with the iPad, the impact of this display in the battery life of the iPhone would be monumental, thanks to the increase in graphic power demands, pixel activation, and backlighting.

Would you be happy to switch black bars in TV series for less battery life or a thicker, heavier iPhone? I'm sure Apple wouldn't like to make that trade-off.

Fragmentation

That new screen format would also introduce fragmentation into a platform that doesn't have any right now. Zero. None. One iPhone format to rule them all will suddenly be divided and Apple will suddenly lose one of its key advantages over Android

Developers would have to rework all of their apps to work in both the new 16:9 phone and the huge installed base. There are gazillion units of iPhones 3G, 3GS, 4 and 4S out there. And their owners all keep buying new apps. A sudden change in aspect ratio will double developer costs for years to come. And, like I said before, letterboxing old apps is not a good option. They will look like crap and defeat the whole purpose.

So, for years to come, developers would have to maintain two user interface layouts, greatly increasing their costs. This is not like creating new higher resolution art to accomodate the increased density of the Retina display. That's easy. Making new layouts for all current and future applications, however, would be much more dramatic.

The iPad conflict

The iPad and the iPhone have different aspect ratios now. 4:3 vs. 3:2. That's not much of a problem, as the iPad apps have completely different layouts. It's also not a big difference. Games, which are the apps that are more similar between platforms—are easily adaptable for both aspect ratios.

But, if the iPhone goes 16:9 for the sake of adopting the 720p standard, it would make sense for the iPad to go 16:9—or somewhere near that—too. If you adopt one logic to one product, you may as well adopt it for the other.

The problem is that a 16:9 iPad would be absolutely ridiculous.

Steve's golden goose

That's an idea that was repeated many times by Steve Jobs. He—and Tim Cook, for that matter—expressed his disgust with the 16:9 format one the iPad and the iPhone, saying that it doesn't make much sense from a design point of view. Except for movies, it's a format that doesn't bring much benefit. And it's actively bad for things like books and magazines.

The iPhone and the iPad, as Jobs said, happened after many years of brainstorming, planning and development. At the time, they truly believed they had found the magic formula. The market agreed and still agrees. Despite the variety of formats in the Android platform, despite the fact that big screen smartphones have found an audience, iOS keeps selling more and more, its sales increasing at a staggering rate. Even after so many years in the market, Apple's formula keeps winning.

All you people complaining about the new design (if the rumors turn out to be true) will be the ones camping few days in advance to get this phone!

Not sure I like it

Maybe it will grow on me, but I really do not want the phone to be larger. I really wish that they would have found a way to fit the 4" screen within the same basic dimensions as the current phones by decreasing the amount of bezel around the screen. This solution just seems too easy and too obvious and chases the "competition" rather than leading it in a newer, smarter direction.

Why doesn't Apple just make two sizes or even three different sized phones. Leave the current 3.5" for the ladies and make a larger 4.8" for the guys and maybe have an in-between size too. Whats the problem with Apple giving people a little choice, their mac laptops come in different sizes and so why not their phones?

Had to downvote you for that - as a gentleman with small hands (makes the penis look bigger) I find the implication that only ladies have small hands offensive.

But yeah, I don't see why they couldn't have a range.

I'm starting to get a bit worried now - I don't really want a super-long screen. Could be handy for games in landscape mode, I suppose.

The increased visibility we have on future products is new and good. Apple is making bank on upgrade customers buying a new $600 device with a $2500 contract every year and a half or so. The carriers LOVE it because the hand down devices also get $2500 contracts. This additive revenue stream flows to Apple too. So come August/September 2012 we should see some real revenues of note.

Till then we can see the price of AAPL drop. Buy on weakness. Accumulate.
