Earlier this year, the team behind the popular Pixelmator photo editing app for iOS and Mac announced plans to unveil a new pro-level Mac app, Pixelmator Pro.

At the time the app was announced in September, the Pixelmator team had not provided a release date, but today announced that the new software will be coming on November 29.

Pixelmator Pro features a reimagined editing workflow with simplified editing tools and intelligent image editing features powered by machine learning. It uses a single-window interface and has been built from the ground up for the Mac.

The software uses the new Core ML framework built into macOS High Sierra to power a range of features like automatic horizon detection, a faster and smarter quick selection tool, and an improved repair tool for effortlessly removing objects from photos.

Nondestructive color adjustment tools are available for editing the colors in photos, and there are tools for easily resizing and rearranging layers, plus there's an entirely new painting engine and dynamic paint blending technology powered by Metal 2.

When it launches on November 29, Pixelmator Pro will be priced at $59, a special introductory price. The Pixelmator team plans to raise the price eventually as new updates and features are added, with the intended price for the software set at $99. As with the current Pixelmator app, Pixelmator Pro will be a one-time purchase and updates will be provided to customers for free.

$99?

The Mac Affinity team is on the floor rolling with laughter. You can get Affinity Photo AND Designer for that price.

I'm sorry but this comment is just silly and uninformed. I bought Pixelmator 7 or 8 years ago when it first launched on the Mac App Store and haven't paid for an upgrade since.

This optional upgrade for a lot more features for a mere fraction of the price of software like Photoshop is a steal.

I swear some people are never satisfied unless they get everything in the world for free.

Something I wonder about: how can Pixelmator stay in business with a pay once model? I hate ads & subscription-based apps as much as the next guy, but I wonder how they stay in business. Are they really getting that many new purchasers?

Does not handle raw images, no.

From the pixelmator website...

Featuring a collection of powerful, nondestructive color adjustments, Pixelmator Pro lets you edit the colors in your photos in any way you want. Each adjustment has breathtaking color quality thanks to advanced image processing techniques that eliminate posterization artifacts and improve clarity. The RAW Layers feature lets you edit multiple RAW images as layers in a single document using all the additional image detail saved in your RAW files. And Recipes give you a way to easily save, reuse, and share your favorite adjustment combinations.

They were an early App Store success; they've always made a truly competitive alternative to Photoshop (and others) at a good value, focused on exciting upgrades, and fully honouring the Mac's capabilities.

This is one of the few moves of this magnitude they've ever made, and their potential customer base is strengthened by the trust and loyalty they've earned over the last decade.

Is this a lightroom alternative

I have the same question. I really want to be able to end my Creative Cloud photography plan. I guess I will just have to buy this and see how well it processes my RAW images compared to Lightroom.

I'll be interested to see how this compares to Affinity Photo. I love the speed and simple U.I of Pixelmator, so they may have advantages there.

It would be awesome if they managed to introduce one for all software so I can switch from ON1 Raw which I found disappointing but couldn’t find anything better to replace aperture.
Pixelmator really does look awesome and if they built it from scratch to take advantage of Mac power then we could have a winner here. Let’s hope

The Mac Affinity team is on the floor rolling with laughter. You can get Affinity Photo AND Designer for that price.

Microsoft Office 365 team is also on the same floor, rolling with laughter, considering they are offering a plethora more of standalone apps working on a synchronized system of web, mobile and desktop, for about the same $99 or even lesser price, while for the price, Affinity is offering just two.

Stand corrected.

Probably the same way Pixologic does with Zbrush.

It will be hard to catch up with Affinity Photo.

Pixelmator was great, until Affinity Photo came. I switched to Affinity, and I don't see any feature that will make me come back.

One problem is that if you purchased Pixelmator recently, lack of upgrade path means having to fork $59 to purchase the app again.

I would've preferred Pro as IAP to existing Pixelmator (similar to Omni's apps).

1. Pixelmator announced the update months ago. So kinda buyer beware at that point (IMHO).

But

2. Black Friday will bring out tons of 15-20% off iTunes cards. Buy one of these to buy Pxlmtr Pro @ discount. Problem solved.

I'm on the fence with a new mac software. I have Pixelmator and it gets the job done, but I also have Affinity Photo on my iPad Pro and it kind of kicks serious @$$. Can anyone compare the two?

Probably the same way Pixologic does with Zbrush.

This is another one that baffles me. I bought ZBrush when 4 came out. To an outsider, they may think we're still on 4 since ZBrush has a silly naming system, but ZBrush 4 came out in I believe 2010, I haven't paid for an upgrade since and the functionality of the program increased exponentially.

Did they say they are not continuing to upgrade the non-pro version? If not then your comment about lack of upgrade path doesn't make sense. You just wouldn't get the features the pro app has (which you never expected to get anyway)...

True but if I knew that Pro version is forthcoming, which isn’t mentioned on App Store page, I would’ve waited. While Apple is also at fault for not providing upgrade path, a simple IAP for Pro feature would’ve been fairer.

Stop whining, users are really terrible, Pixelmator has been updated for years for free. The same will happen to Pro versione for sure.
Good for you for having purchased the app years ago and got free updates.

But I purchased the app 2 months ago. And App Store page didn’t mention whether Pro version is forthcoming.
