How Do You Think The New MacBook Pro Games?

You can play 16xx res, with max settings{i7} (though I am not sure if you were applying the "Extra" option or "High")

Here is one difference though, I am running the 1.5 version, and you most likely are on 1.7, the patch difference includes some GPU optimizations especially for AA and stuff.
So that could account for some of it.

All 3 textures on "Extra" and with the patch installed. I've tried 2xAA on at least one res setting and it nearly halved the frame rate.

That is an absolutely massive difference then.

I still can't tell how much difference the 1.5 to 1.7 is making but, you can play higher FPS, higher settings, and higher res.

The copy I have is not legit right now, so I can't apply the update patch.

When Steam is released next Wednesday, I'm sure they will have the COD 4 for mac available to download though, and I have purchased a legit copy through Steam a long time ago now. (came from the PC world)

So I'll see the difference then. Man that's nuts though, almost makes me want to go back and get the i7, I have 1 more week left on my BB return policy.

I've got the i7, but this makes me want to go back and get the high res haha. I wonder if he would see the same type of performance on games like Fallout 3, Dragon Age, and some more demanding MMORPGs?

Maybe, I would hold your horses though for the 1.7 update so we can see the true difference.

Though I'm sure he'll still win.

damn 256 is not a lot

Hm, I suppose. Most reports seem to be saying that the high resolution is making little difference in most games : /

True, but some of those seemed to be older games. New ones, might be a different story.

if no one is going to post proper detailed results or benchmarks I will offer my system for comparison. just factor in that the cpu is a bit worse than the pro's, but the graphics card is singnifactly better for gaming. Take what you see below and expect to loose 5-10fps.

specs

3Ghz imac core 2
4 gigs ram ddr2
8800gs 512mb (this is is about 10 ranks above the 330m on notebook check, its really an 8800m gts)
WINDOWS 7 64 bit
latest drivers etc

street fighter 4

unplayable at decent settings, even at 1280 x 720 you would have to put settings at medium. dont bother. 19-25 fps avg

just cause 2

only playable with very low settings at 1920 x 1200 , slightly higer settings at 1280 x 720 but meh, again don't bother IMO. 20-30 fps , playable but VERY ugly when compared with the game maxed

L4D (first one)

maxed, 1920 x 1200, 2 x aa , 2x af. 25 fps min 45 avg 60 max - 15" owners expect very similar performance, 1920 x 1200 17" owners expect to turn the settings down a bit I suppose, very playable.

Modern Warfare 2

1920 x 1200, textures on high, 2 x aa 25 min 40 avg 60 max
expect to turn off some settings slighty for singleplayer (or endure brief lag at moment like heavy desert blowing dust). However I think both 15"/17" owners should be fine with this one. You might be able to push up the textures to extra, but I just left it.

I know its stupid since it an entirely different system, but it should give you a better idea out of what to expect from these new pro's. You will be running older gamers maxed (older than 2007), newer (2007+) on high(not ultra high), and the most demanding and latest titles (crysis +fsx +2009+) on low (which is better to wait a couple years for new pc to play imo)

If people are interested I will post more games... if anyone has extremely conflicting results with my system, please post, I don't want to steer anyone in the wrong direction.

As for the 13" system it has a lower res, but worse graphics card In the end I expect 15-20 fps less when compared to my iMac. so naturally you would have to to some serious tweaking/compromise to get playable framerates.

I can tell you guys a bit about the framerate of 2 games on my base macbook pro 13 " on its native resolution running bootcamp windows 7 64b.

Anno 1404

Using a mixture of settings I am able to get a pretty constant framerate of 30, which is very playable. I fully disabled shadows since one way or another this causes severe framerate issues. I have set texture , effects, gpu glothing, post effects and object detail to high, terrain detail on medium. I use 2x AF and 0x AA. Everything else is off or at its lowest setting. I also turned off vsync.

Company of Heroes

I am playing the game in max directx9 mode, which means shaders are on high as well textures and terrain. (instead off ultra which is only available on directx10) AA is off, and everything else is on its max settings. (except for those 3) I am getting a framerate of 40, 25-30 when a lot is happening on the screen. The ingame bechmark rated these settings as Great.

expect better on your MBP

I am looking forward to doing same on my MBP when it comes...
by the way were you using any add-ons like PMDG etc when you got that fps? just curious
NO special add ons or even service pack so frame rate should increase a it with that installed. However on my 24'' this laptop breaks down and cries like a little girl on anything but low on full res.

FYI, I made the 3D Mark bench with both drivers included in the Apple install DVD (194.94) and 197.16 from laptop video

default drivers 194.94:
Capture.PNG

197.16:
Capture2.PNG

Hm, strange.

With:
Core: 640
Mem: 940
Shader: 1410

I have only ~6000 points in 3d mark 06 (1280*800, MS win 7 x64 ul).

I wonder, how people get almost 8000. Maybe I do something wrong?

I think the lesson here is, if you are going to be gaming on your MBP, get the i7, not because it has an i7, but because it has the extra 256 of vram.

I can only turn 3 settings to high and the rest have to be normal, FPS will stay just about the same the whole time, but If I set more than 3 to high or even one to extra, FPS goes to 2 -3. Tell tale signs that there is not enough Vram.

I bet on the 512 model you could pump everything to high on 1440x900

Anyone done this? Mac Side

I got the base core i5 and only have one game for mac (Portal)
Your theory is correct as there are 6 setting options and if any more than 4 are at high its unplayable. I am running the high res screen at native though.

However after many years of reading a gaming mag (Pc, yes I know) that Vram is only useful on high res. I tested with the standard res (turned it down) and everything on high running at about 35FPS.

For what it's worth I have a 15" i7 with HR screen, and have been very pleasantly surprised with gaming. These are just stock card settings, not overclocked) in W7 Pro x64:
-Crysis runs mixed medium/high at native (1680x1050)
-COD4 MW runs maxed at native perfectly fine
-Fallout 3 runs at high (AA off) at native perfectly fine
-Dragon Age runs most settings at high at native
-All source (HL2, Portal, L4D2) run maxed at native
-I also played F.E.A.R. 2 for a while, it ran everything on High at native.
I haven't checked framerates for any of these because I honestly didn't need to. I haven't played anything yet that it hasn't been able to comfortably handle.
I'm quite happy with the High res.

Hey everyone. Just thought I'd let you guys know that I did a review on the oh wait...

Jaja xD.

I had seen your review and had seen the post about a "punk ass kid". I just didn't know it was you. I don't really think that of you, but found it funny.
I liked your videos and hope you make some more. Keep up to good work!

Cheers! :)

If someone has a copy of the Mac version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and the i5 or i7 15" MBP, could you share if you're able to run the game with all settings maxed and at what resolution (would love to know if i can run at the native hi-res option of 1680x105)?

The Aspyr site states the supported game cards, but since I don't normally game on the computer, I have no idea how the 330M stacks up to these: NVIDIA GeForce 7300, 7600, 8600, 8800
NVIDIA GeForce Quadro FX 4500
ATI Radeon X1600, X1900, HD 2400, HD 2600

Or if anyone could make an educated guess on whether the i5/i7 15" could play this game, that would be helpful too. Thanks.

somewhere in between the 8600 and 8800

modern warfare runs fine on my old mbp, so it should run even better on yours

yeah, vram is for resolution and textures. Right now, most games out there are designed to run with at least 256 mb of ram. In a couple years, though, I wouldn't be surprised if they bumped that to 512.

Thanks. I've had the game for about a month now, but it's still good to know where the 330M sits in relation to those (I assume desktop) cards.

Hi there.
Found a video of Dragon Age: Origins being played on a 15" MacBook Pro (2.66 GHz i7, NVIDIA GT 330M) through Bootcamp on Windows 7 64-bit. Thought it could help out the thread in its data collection.

Heya, thats my video : ) Thanks for the support. I'm in the process of adding a couple of more videos to the blog, I just started it and its a slow process.

Congratulations on your blog then!
It's a very nice video and I really appreciate you posting it (especially since it's not that easy to find videos of Dragon Age: Origins on MBPs).
Thanks for taking the time and effort to make these videos.

Cheers! :)

Awe, thanks for the kind words! I just put a Bioshock in OSX video up as well. I'm working on making everything look nice and figuring out the best settings to export my videos with. Also probably gonna grab a domain name as well. Check back every week or so for updates : )

For everyone who wants to take a look at it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QpscdBe55g&feature=channel

That's Bioshock for OS X on the MacBook Pro 15" (2.66 GHz i7, 512 MB NVIDIA GT 330M). As far as I can tell, it runs smoothly.

Cheers! :)
