Looking at this MACWORLD (link) in depth review of the new 15'' MBP, on Call of Duty 4 the fps are (almost) identical between the base i5 (with 256mb of video mem) and the i7 (with 512mb of video). Could anybody help me in understanding why is it worth spending much more for the improved i7/512mb? Are there other games where fps would improve greatly from going from i5 to the i7 model?
Basically: is the i7/512mb worth the cost???

Thanks for your help on this!

They don't tell you what settings are used for Call of Duty. 512MB of video memory is mainly useful for larger textures along with more frame buffers (triple buffering etc). The speed of the GPU is what is affects resolution and shader settings.

too hot

games running under win7 in my new i7 17inch mbp are smooth.. but im getting the high peak noise and high temperature, is that normal???

here's another of many 3dmark06 scores.

machine: MBP 15" 2010 model
core i5 2.4ghz, 4gb ram, Nvidia GT 330M
Windows 7 pro

no overclocking, everything as is.
resolution 1280 x 800 (since it is the free version, I could not change it to a higher resolution)
anti aliasing none
filtering optimal
repeat tests off

3dmark06 score: 6630

interesting, thank you vm:)

So is the general consensus that the i7 512mb machines are running games just as well if not better than the 2.8 c2d 512mb machines? Im looking to switch but dont want to loose gaming performance as I can run most things well on this machine.

Also worried about heat, sounds like people are doing fine though.

Just read that article showing gaming benches, and how the 512 330m's only benefit over their 256 younger brothers when running game at 1920x1200 (only sometimes) and always at 2560x1600

This means that unless you are hooking your MBP to an external monitor, both cards will perform the same.

Good news for me, since the 540m i5 and 620 i7 we so similar in benches I was also hoping the GPU would be negligible too. (and it is)

Basically the 540m i5 is going to perform almost exactly the same in every way as the i7. Unless you are doing top end super multithread work.

I think I'd rather use the money difference between the i5 i7 to get the resolution bump.

Bah, nobody mentions whether or not they are using a 5400rpm or 7200rpm HD. This is my biggest concern at the moment : /

3dmark06 score: 6630

interesting, so the 330M runs circles around the 320M w/o OC, as expected.

4750 vs. 6630. Ratio: 0.71

when OC'ed, the 320M gains a little (clock: 631Mhz, Shader: 1309Mhz)

5340 vs. 6630 Ratio: 0.81

-- As I am currently using clock speeds of 706Mhz, I will have another go at 3dM06 tomorrow :)

I don't think the drive speed has a big inpact on gaming performaces. Maybe the game will load a bit slower but the 3D performaces will remain unchanged or very slightly lower.

Hmm almost makes me wish I had just gone to the store and boughten a 5400 model then instead of CTO and waiting : /

Hopefully the 7200 is worth it.

Quoting this from a sticky-ed thread in the NotebookReview forums, home to a lot of wildly tech-savvy people:

Will a faster hard drive help my gaming performance?
The hard drive does not affect in-game performance; a faster hard drive will only decrease loading times. A faster hard drive is a great upgrade for increasing overall performance (basically anything that uses the hard drive will see a performance boost), but it will not do anything for your framerates. For gaming, the components to concentrate on, in order of performance, are the Grahpics Card, amount of RAM, and Processor type.

Hm thanks for that! I guess my only concern is that the 7200 may run hotter/be nosier/use more battery as some have been saying. I guess the only way to find out is to wait for it : /

Anyways, I will try to make this as easy as possible since i keep getting comments for it:

1) DL any driver from Laptopvideo2go. I am currently using these:
197.16

2) DL the custom INF from that forum as well

3) PLEASE follow this GREAT guide Here on how to replace the INF and install the drivers.
NOTE: AFTER YOU REMOVE YOUR OLD NVIDIA DRIVERS, USE A PROGRAM LIKE DRIVER SWEEPER IN SAFEMODE TO CLEAN THE REMNANTS OF THE DRIVER

4) Next, install the latest Nvidia tools here

5.Now you should be good to go!

Anyone been able to test Bad Company 2 with the hi res screen? (single player test at 1024x768 is totally pointless).

I really wish Steam would hurry up, they have 3 more days to fulfill their promise.

So do you guys recommend the high res screen for the 15" even if I wil do some gaming at lower resolutions than max?

I would probably need to run some games in a lower resolution for better framerates (1280x800). How does this resolution look on the high res screen in windows? Anyone tried SC2 in this res for example?

Simple question here.

How does the 330M GT with 256mb perform at 1680*1050? Will it be better than the 9600M GT with 256mb at 1440*900? Is it decent enough in general?

I'll play in Windows using boot camp and I'll be interested in a few new games like Starcraft 2.

This is more or less the same questions as I have.

Does 1280x800 work well in windows on the high res screen 15"?
Since i beliece 1650 will be a bit to high sometimes for the GPU to handle (Crysis?)

In general playing a game under native resolution = lower image quality...by how much? Im unsure.

My question is there much of a difference between the i5 256mb 330m vs. the i7 512mb 330m? Basically what difference is noticed between 256mb vs. 512mb in graphics

Plenty of topics about this already. In short, the 512MB is only useful when connecting multiple monitors for example.

Anyone? I'm a few hours away from confirming my replacement. I really want the anti-glare screen but if there's a big drop in gaming performance, I'd consider sticking with the standard one.

I'm going to grab a 540m here pretty quick. I really can't see the need for the i7 and extra 256 vram. I won't be hooking this up to an external monitor (at least I wont be gaming when I do)

and the i7 only shines through when doing some pretty insane top end stuff that I won't notice much of a difference in.
