I am still unclear why Apple only puts in 5400RPM drives in the Mini...they are much noticeably slower than a 7200RPM.

Heat?

I dunno...I've replaced numerous laptop's with 5400 drives to 7200 and never had an issue.

Most Mac sites that offer drives/kits to upgrade your Mini (at least since 2007) showcase 7200RPM drives and I've never heard anyone complain of a problem after upgrading.

It would be a nice $50 option on the Minis (especially the server models) to upgrade to a 7200RPM drive.

Anyone else have thoughts?

Everyone will be replacing with SSD within two years anyway.

Yes - very! So - question:

1. Will i be able to connect my PS3, Wii etc and use the iMac as teve?

2. Will you be able to record it?

Point 1 is of most importance!

Interesting that the video signal is routed through the motherboard rather than "direct" to the display. Does this mean they could potentially offer the ability to capture & record video via this port?

Would like to thank iFixit for all their hard work! This allows consumers to make even more informed purchase decisions.

looking at that pic on the minicolo article they really like their mac minis dont they?? :p

I reckon they dont put 7.2K in the mac minis cos they are too expensive maybe??

That's why the best video card you can get on the new iMirror is a one year old mid range ATI card on a $2K computer and you're stuck with it for the next 3-4 years. The triumph of form over function.

The Quad core model comes with an ATI 4850 512Mb. Not top of the line, but it's pretty good IMO.

So, let me get this straight, the "server" mini is virtually the same as the regular mini but has two hard drives, no OD, and runs OS X Server for $400 more? Is that supposed to be a deal?

Let's see:

-Same config as dearer Mac Mini - so $799
-Lacks OD drive (worth $50-$70 tops) so $729
-Has extra 500GB drive ($100) so $829
-Lacks Snow Leopard ($29) so $800
-Has Snow Leopard Server ($499) so $1299
-Actually sells for $999.

Could be a deal if that form factor is what you are after.

It's ok, I guess. But with that beautiful 27" 2500x1400 monitor, couldn't Apple have at least offered a top of the line video card ? I just find it galling that the best you can get for Apple's premium dsktop is a year old mid range card. Not surprised, just once again disappointed.

I'm curious about what they said about the glass:
Hopefully Apple's got some pretty strong magnets to keep the glass where it belongs. After upgrading the RAM in our iMac, we noticed the glass was slightly out of alignment on one side.

Is the glass on an iMac really only held on with magnets?

So the iMac has the potential of a video card upgrade? Interesting. Its on a daughter card and one that Apple did not create. I wonder what other cards at this time are compatible. Or I wonder if a third-party could create upgrade cards?

I am surprised no one else mentioned this huge item!

310 Watts isn't that much power when you think of it. A decent gaming computer will make you buy a minimum 500W and up.
380W works just fine here. Apple's own specification page goes higher at 365W and it's for continuous load. The draw from the outlet is going to be higher.

The 4850 is 16 months old now. :p

hmmm the real question is if I shoud buy a HP Mediasmart for my server and windows 7 maybe $800 bucks... or this for $1100 (canadian)... I hate windows but... 4 drive bays instead of one.... an app to access everything across the world.... hmm....

why do i still want the mac mini server?

3.06Ghz LGA 775 CPU - real desktop version YEAH!YEAH!! and these processors are cheap  apple is making ton of money from even the base iMac!

base three model with LGA775 socket and one model with 1136.

wonder why apple did not put Core 2 Quad LGA 775 CPUs in there? at least on $1699 27"

it is kinda weird 27" has the space to take core i5/Core 2 Quad ($1699 machine i am talking about)

Aside from the dreaded mirror/screen, the high end iMac is finally entering into desirable photoshop desktop territory. Good update by apple.

The prices on Core 2 Quad on LGA 775 aren't very competitive against Lynnfield. I can imagine that they didn't want to have yet another logic board to support. I'm surprised they didn't make the entire 27" line Lynnfield to simplify things.

Do we have a comparison of the 27" Core 2 against the 21.5" Core 2 logic boards yet?

SCORE!!!!

The 27" iMac HAS to be powered up for external display use. This means that, indeed, it can be turned on, running things in the background, while I plug my laptop into it to use as an external display for day-to-day use.

I'd love have the iMac running eyetv, with my two hybrids plugged in constantly recording/steraming shows. Also running iTunes shared library, and on-call for extra processing power when i need it. I can stream iTunes and eyetv shows to my laptop without having to have a ton of perifs plugged in. The would be a fantastic setup. Very happy it is possible. Now, just to find $2000 for a new 27" iMac. yikes.....

Wow

oooh snap!! looks like from the teardown details the processor and video card in the new iMacs are both socketed, not soldered!

so with some care, a clean bench, a good parts map and lots of torx screw removal/replacement, this thing is theoretically upgradeable too!

not to mention the RAM door is 3 phillips screws and a slot @ the bottom  meaning you can prolly do the upgrade to 16GB by yourself in 5 minutes, and for half the cost of buying it from apple.

Who cares?

I've got to say these teardowns are of limited interest. 99.9% of us will never use or need this information. An internal view of a Mac Pro is much more interesting because the typical user can go into a Mac Pro without fear of not being able to put it back together.

The Mini draws ~15w at idle? Something to consider if you plan to keep it running 24/7.

it wasn't before? you don't need a 3.0GHz computer, and 8GB of RAM just to run photoshop.
