As I pointed out a couple times in this thread, this is likely also an Ive design since they've been working on this for years and he only recently stopped consulting.

Possibly. But for that you would have to know how much of his consulting gig was simply there to calm the shareholders after the departure of Apple's star designer was announced.

It's ok looking I guess, bordering on ugly, it's very industrial looking and I don't mean that in a good way. The finish looks awful, but I get these are renders and not what Apple is going to release. But I don't know what would be worse, that matte industrial grey or if Apple slapped their cheapie looking titanium finish on it. I suppose it's better than the fake chrome...ahem stainless look. I'm also curious if the Ti on this one scratches as easily as the previous models, for the love of all that's good Apple just use brushed SS.

But all that junk around the crown just gives it an unfinished look, or like it doesn't belong. I understand it's to protect the crown, but from a design perspective they could have made it more aesthetically pleasing. Anyway I'm dialing in to see if they can improve the battery life, they need to get 3+ days in order to compete with Samsung (at half the price) and closer to 7 days to compete with others like Garmin.

I accidentally called emergency services when lifting weights in the gym. (I think my weightlifting gloves held down the side button.) Since then, I use the watch with the screen rotated on my right arm. The crown is just as easy to use with a thumb and it’s more comfortable for me. I’d definitely have to do that with a bigger watch. But I think a bigger Apple Watch might just be too big for me.

Just use a fitness tracker that lets you lock the screen (not sure if you can just do that in Apple settings). I used to do that in the gym all the time, but now I just lock the screen.

Not going to lie, I like it and will buy it if these renders are accurate. The curved glass of the 45mm watch became almost obstructive when Apple basically went edge to edge with the larger display content. Prefer to see all the content flat, rather than the edges so curved with Apple Watch 7

The flat screen is super nice, although my only fear is how big the bezels will be as the curved screens served double duty to hide some of the bezel. If the bezels look like these renders I would be extremely happy, but I'm not sure if that's technically possible.

Well, I prefer mechanical watches anyway.

I have given smart watches and fitness trackers a go but I did not get the pleasure out of looking at them that I did from my mechanical watch. I then tried "double-wristing" but the watch on the "wrong" arm kept getting bashed.

Battery life was also an issue, but really took a back seat to the above.

In the end I gave up on smart watches and fitness trackers.

That’s one ugly watch. I do admit, Johnny Ive got one thing, and that is making an attractive smart watch.

This is a butchering of his iconic design. Sad day if true.

edit: I wonder how many ppl downvoting me are Apple engineers...

And I wonder how many ppl downvoting you just happen to have a different opinion?

Or they don't considering it is the best selling smartwatch already. I think Apple is happy with the direction they took and they aren't going to change it.

It might be the best selling premium Smartphone because of Apple, but I see way more people with fitbits and stuff like that. People who own them do not care about premium, that Apple is trying to be and failing at.

The same happens to me, it looks like design doesn’t matter at apple anymore. Last year, I checked all the iPhones and was surprised how ugly they have turned. I guess apple is not aiming at us anymore, they are aiming a market that doesn’t understand design, and that market is huge and full of people trying to buy the new iPhone no matter what.

If its as-focused on endurance fitness as has been rumoured, I'm in. I currently have a separate Suunto watch I wear for hill runs and ultra races but was considering a Garmin Enduro. If the Apple Watch could now do it all, I'll go for one of these instead and sell the Suunto.

Edited to say... Appreciate that this may be a niche use case.

Compared to the Samsung Galaxy line of watches, the Apple Watch is ugly (all models). However, the Apple Watch has more functionality because they have a better developer base, and the ecosystem is the same for almost all iOS devices. I loved the look of my Samsung watch when I had one. Got compliments all the time on what a cool looking watch it was. Sadly, it was just good for notifications and health tracking.

It depends what use you want to make of your data. When it comes to technical capability for tracking sports activities, I think Apple has almost caught up with Garmin/Suunto etc for mainstream activities, especially if the rumours about this device are true. But when it comes to providing access to data and (God forbid) sharing it outside of Apple's walled garden, Apple are still miles behind, even with third party app support.

For me, its not really about the third party support, its a combination of software and hardware. I appreciate this is a niche case, but some of this will apply to other sports/activities which it seems like this watch is going to be aimed at.

As things stand I can sync activities with most 3rd party services and that's been the case for a while hasn't it?

Touchscreens are great, but not when its pouring rain or snowing and I want to check something on the watch that isn't on the main screen. There's a reason Garmin and Suunto watches still have big, tactile buttons which are very analogue in feel.

These watches can also do GPS tracking for 24 hours+ which needs a big battery, but also software which can be altered so you can adjust the GPS interval to maximise battery life. My Suunto also has the intelligence to recognise that I'm doing something long and alter the GPS recording interval automatically as well as closing down other services if my battery is getting low.

Customisation of the activity screen would be good. With more fields and maybe multiple screens of data for easy swiping left/right.

And then there's the (now) basic stuff, so measuring your training load and recognising when you maybe need a rest day rather than just telling me I'm being a lazy git the day after a long/hard session. I think that's something which really needs fixed in the software as I don't think it is healthy in all circumstances to point out you're maybe having an easier day than normal. And that should be factored-in to the streaks in some way.

Honestly, it looks like a digital timex, and that’s not a compliment.

The Apple Watch looks more like a formal watch, especially when in stainless steel. It has a similar shape to some of Herme’s watches.

I’d take a hermes knockoff over a timex knock off any day.

Feel like the price rumors of this have to be way off the mark. No way people will shell out north of $1000 for a device that is fundamentally not very different the current watch. A slightly larger display doesn’t warrant a 2x increase in price. This thing would really struggle to sell at that sort of price mark. I’d guess this thing tops out at $799. Even then I just don’t see the appeal

Well not to say I told ya so. But knew it couldn’t be the $999 outlets were quoting. $799 is reasonable and will sell
