So why are you acting like Google has a database “on individuals” instead of the “groups to sell spaces for ads”. They don’t exactly have a folder named Michael Goff and a long list of things about me.

You are exactly wrong. They have assigned a universal identifier to you Mike. It connects all of your emails, driving history, photos, web searches, web surfing, posts, age, income, etc. Sorry to be the one to break it to you. How else do you think they could target you with specific ads. No, it's not some human reading your file of course, it's all done by computers, but the data is there for law enforcement, intel agencies, hackers, etc. One high level intel leader said it best, "if Google didn't exist, we'd have to invent it. "

That's why facial recognition is important, so Google can know when you show up places, who your friends are, etc., for the times when you don't have your phone location on. Again, sorry to be the one to break it to you, but the good news is there is an alternative, it's Apple. They don't make their revenue by selling access to you, and they also have a corporate ethos that privacy is important. Make an informed choice.

Auto-play blocking, is this a tease? It is hard to fathom Apple making any change for the benefit of the end user, from my Apple orchard experience of 33 years and probably 20 Macs, 3 iPhones, and one useless iPad.

Apple did a very good job with this interface in Preferences. Everything is there, it is clean, concise, easy to use. Arguably one of the all-time best improvements to Safari.

Now if they could only give iTunes that treatment.

Easily the worst ui in their catalog. ...and maybe of any media player ever.

I do use an iPhone, and I do use iCloud email.

Safari 11 is one of the highlights of macOS High Sierra.

The features can be installed on macOS Sierra by running Safari Technology Preview as default.

Its a wonder you haven't lost all faith in Apple products.

That's a great start. Just make sure you don't use Google services, e.g., maps, photos, search, etc. And use a VPN or at least content/tracker blockers for your web searches. Apple tracking blocking in new iOS is great as it will undoubtedly freak out Google, Facebook and others because, while imperfect, it is something that can be used by default, which is frightening to them as they rely on the 99% of people not reading terms of service and understanding what is going on. All of this will go a long way to deprive Google of the data it wants to put in your "dossier."

But please don't use it on MacRumors. It's against the forum rules even to write about content blocking, at least if MR could be involved.

I don't run an ad-blocker. I run Privacy Badger.

Privacy Badger is designed to allow ads, and only block content that flouts the philosophy of non-consensual tracking. What part of "do-not-track" in my browser settings does MR not understand?

I don't know a single website that understands do-not-track. So if I am lazy (what I am almost all the time) and let Adguard or Ghostery block everything it's their fault when the ads are also blocked. :p

I have kept trying Safari every now and again but usually had to revert to Firefox for several reasons, but the main reason of not being able to block autoplay lately. Safari has sucked since the beginning but it has improved to the point that with the "terminal trick" I have actually switched Safari to my default browser. I check both "Video Needs User Action" and "Disallow Inline Video." I also have Flash set to off and enable it on specific sites and I unchecked the "Stop plug-ins to save power." I only use one extension which is 1Password, and most of the time Safari has been acting so well I forget it is Safari.
