Comparing the specs between the 5th and 6th generation of iPads, the 5th generation comes w/both GPS, as well as High Dynamic Range (HDR), while the new 6th doesn't.

So the new 6th generation has no GPS nor HDR?

Don't these two features add a little to the 5th vs. the 6th?

I think the iPad mini is pretty much dead. I wouldn't hold my breath for a refresh. Not now, not ever.

I think I will still stick with an iPad Pro for the laminated display and Promotion. I write on my iPad Pro every day, and having a worse display will likely start to get annoying very quickly. It's one of those things which I probably won't save on.

The display on the iPad is not bad, the display on the ipad Pro is just better. However, for writing and general media consumption I don’t think that you will truely benefit from the Pro display - compared to people doing photo and media creation. Of course it is always nice to have, but the new ipad looks strong on the features to price ratio for most users. I just wish they would have upped the ram, as that is alway a buy signal for the long term usage.

Looking forward to see what the iPad Pro 2018 update will bring to the table.

All Wi-Fi + cellular iPad models have GPS.

The 5th gen iPad 9.7 doesn't have HDR. It's just the 2nd gen Pro 12.9 and Pro 10.5 that do.

Can someone tell me what any of these “new iPads” offer over the iPad Air 2?

Hollow, not full laminated, screen, cheap feeling (The pro model is great however, with full laminated screen.). If you think about it, check it first! i would never replace my air2 by an ipad. i waited to see what they will offer on this spring, but nothing interesting and i ended up buying 2nd gen. ipp 12.9 with a pencil.

I am currently using the 9.7" iPad Pro. It would be pretty hard for me to downgrade once I am accustomed to a certain standard of performance.

That said, I am curious as to how many years of continued software updates that 2gb of ram will get them. This device essentially has the same specs as the iPhone 7. Will the iPhone 7 be supported for longer than it should thanks to the 2018 iPad (typically 4 years)?

It depends what’s important to you individually

4 speakers -don’t really care for it
4gb of ram - Big like but can understand saving money for 2gb
Display on 10.5 - worth every single penny

An A11X in the ipad Pro is gonna kick ass, but yes they properly need to come up with something new-ish to justify the pricegap between regular and pro.

Performance shouldn’t be an issue on the 2018 iPad (at least compared to the Pro 9.7). The A10 is a bit faster than even A9X. It’s the features that are lacking.

But yeah, I do wonder how long Apple will consider 2GB sufficient. Quite honestly though, I have absolutely no complaints with A9 (6S/6S+/SE, 5th gen) performance even now. By this point on the iPad 2, it was most certainly lagging already. Going forward, I think Apple might end up dropping support for reasons other than performance.

What a naming nightmare. 5th gen ipad, new ipad, new new ipad, new new new ipad, new 10" ipad, new new 9.7" ipad. WTF. Please name it iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad 5, iPad 6, ... iPad 9,...

I think they should just use years as declaration, like the MacBooks. The 2017 iPad Pro, etc.

I would of purchase one of these 6 generation iPad if they would only double the memory to 4GB! The cost for Apple to double it is around $9!

No one ever mentions modem speed for LTE models.
Same as as the rest of the Apple mobile device, still on LTE 4! LTE 5 is coming out in the fall from major cellular carriers but in limited areas. I think Apple will delay the new standard until the rollout is complete in 2026!

No one will notice speed differences between the a10X and a11x except benchmarks as usual. The only thing people truly noticed with last year's ipad was the 120 HZ display (I no longer notice it even in comparison with other devices). Most ipads even the educational version with the a10 will be smooth and fast running so how does these processors kick a$$ when it really doesn't show its true colors unless you are editing 4K video. Powerful processors yet limited use cases due to a limited mobile OS. Ram is the dividing factor with ipads these days especially when using safari......

Being limited to 2GB RAM will be most limiting factor with the new iPad (2018), although don't realistically think it will stop it functioning properly for a good 3-4 years anyway.

I still have an iPad Air (from 2013) which has the A7 chip and "only" 1GB RAM and it still operates nicely.

Of course at some point it will cause problems, but don't see it happening anytime soon.

So does the mini 2, still running strong (for my needs) with iOS11. :)
Hopefully by the time i'll need a replacement, they'll update the mini...

MacRumors is, hands down, a much better site than Apple Insider. But you couldn’t tell by comparing their videos. The pointless video from this article being a perfect example. Dan From MacRumors is spewing idle speculation, not doing an actual hands on demo or direct comparison, and generally gives way more of his opinion than we need. Compare that with this video from Apple Insider, which is based off of actually having a demo units each iPad in hand, has lots of useful facts, and makes informed comparisons between the two that really give users and potential buyers valuable information.

Again, I love MacRumors and read it every single day. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say that their videos, and host, for the most part annoy me, and I really wish they would make a serious upgrade. MacRumors readers deserve better.

Is it really fair to compare the two when the MR video was published March 28 (the day following Apple's announcement) with the AI video that was published April 4th (a week later)?

huh? When someone says, "iPhone X-like iPad mini", if they're not thinking about the notch and being bezel-less, what is left for it to be iPhone X-like?
They are saying that due to the fact it will have iPhone X like features with Face ID/no home button and a device built on swiping which is what it will be.

I actually spent some time with the 2018 iPad yesterday at Best Buy. For an introductory iPad with pencil capabilities, it's pretty solid. The display, gap between the screen, lack of promotion and not as vibrant colors are disappointing (spoiled by my 2nd gen 12.9"), but for most people who want an iPad now, you have an option that includes being able to use the pencil. I'd find it more of a value if the 2018 started with 64gb storage, but I was pleasantly surprised by the responsiveness and speed of this new iPad. When I can replace my mom's iPad 2, she'll love this one.

I chose the 12.9" iPad Pro over the 10.5" because I wanted more reading and canvas space than the 10.5". However, getting the same great features in a slightly cheaper and smaller package than the 12.9" is appealing. I also skipped the 10.5" because I never really got on with the 9.7" size (I loved the iPad Mini 4 and I like my 12.9"). That said, playing with the 2018 iPad almost warmed me up to that size; but my optimal on the go iPad would be a mini with pencil capabilities.

Everyone's needs and wants are different; but I like the fact that pencil capability is available at lower price point.
