Is someone trying to take it from you? Is anyone trying to convince you to replace your iPad Pro with this new 2018 iPad?
.

Unless you're a newborn, it's not difficult to understand the meaning of that well-used phrase. Think harder.

Yea, I agree. For school rear camera is very important, AR or as you said scans etc. I meant that front camera remember iPhone 5 times and can't believe changing that for one from 6S would dramatically change the price...
Curious, does lack of OIS negatively affect the 5th gen iPads when used for document scanning?

Of course I understand the well-used phrase when it is used properly. Using it in this context makes no sense. This thread is about the new 2018 iPad vs. the 10.5 iPad Pro. Introducing the fact that you own the 12.9 Pro and love it is a non sequitur.

*woosh*

Until it runs full office apps with mouse support especially with up to 512 gb of storage and microsd card support or usb-c storage options, it cant compete with the surface pro or windows 10 hybrids. Thats the missing link to making it a laptop replacement. Even the web versions of chrome os are better than what iOS has to offer just because of mouse support and real time file management although the cloud is always accessible as well. How does apple expect us to use all the storage on the ipad pro top storage tiers and they still refuse full applications and mouse support. Not all of us even do 4K video editing, play large mobile iOS games, or draw (the excuses so far for that extra storage; since music collections are easily saved to the cloud)...........so something needs to give. The software dock was a good starting point; something borrowed from chrome OS, some android devices, and even Windows.

The iPad Pro has to converge with MacOS no matter what or at least run full none-mobile applications or its just a tablet as usual. At this point many would take a MacOS detachable tablet laptop device that runs ipad apps and has pencil support. Its a no-brainer to create such a device.

"microsd card support or usb-c storage options" .....we really have an old school user here :)

"Office apps" & "Mouse support" .....you raised my blood pressure a little bit there, But I was able to laugh a little.

"Real time file management"....I wasn't aware it wasn't real time?

I can't agree with you. iPad is very confusing line for non tech people. If some would say to you "I bought iPad", and you ask him which one, the person could say "I don't know, I bought it in 2018" You can't say is it 6th gen or 5th which are still in sell and gonna be there for a while. Also Macs have their own dating method (e.g. early 2017 etc) and this product line is not changing that much other than CPU and GPU power. iPad use to change a lot from version to version until iPad 5th gen came out, last big improvement was iPad Air 2. What I am saying is, it was logical to call it iPad, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4.

It's also not true, Apple didn't say 3rd gen iPad was the new iPad. They used this name several times during presentation, ads and even web site. Next iPad (4th) was just iPad, so term the new iPad was used only for 3rd gen (first picture)

Next year iPad 4th gen was just iPad (2nd picture), not The new iPad. The iPad line naming is terrible...

People are often confused about which Mac they have, because macs are named like iPads, not iPhones with a version number in the name.

If “new” was in the product name, it would be capitalised. “The New iPad”

Are you saying the MacBook is actually called the New MacBook?

Of course not. Also, when Apple releases a new iOS version, it lists the names of devices that are compatible:

No iPads are listed with the name “the new iPad”.

Anybody else feel that "Apple Pencil" should be reworded to "Apple Pencil support"? As is, it sounds like it includes it, when really, it just means that it has that capabitliy, and you can shell out more money for the appropriate gear.

I guess this is a page from last decade where others kept seeing "SD card" as a product that has an SD card slot and comes with one, even though some did correctly guess it was just a supported feature without the media included.

Why would I want a orange screen ;)

If you read just before going to bed. The whole point of night mode is to eliminate the blue light spectrum that research suggests interferes with quality of sleep. So there is why you might want an orange screen at night. It’s not like it’s and either or situation. I adjust my hue bulbs the same way.

I love my 10.5" iPad Pro, it's literally the best tablet ever made, even better than the 12.9" imo. Once you get used to the 120hz display nothing compares.

Not doubting it may better for your needs but feature-wise, 12.9” is technically better at split view: https://www.imore.com/ipad-drag-and-drop-multitasking-and-split-view-ios-11-everything-you-need-know

Yes NIGHT SHIFT I use that too but not True Tone which makes everything orange no matter what time of the day

Need to update the Pro to help justify that price difference. New iPad is pretty close for half the price.
Not really though. I currently have the 9.7” pro, my partner has the updated model (10”?). The displays are immaculate especially on the current generation pros with true tone, wide color gamut, and that 120hz display. It’s unbelievable in person..... and the full 4 speaker setup is incredible. I’m sure they bag addition features the new iPad doesn’t and I’m absolutely glad that poorer markets now have access to the Apple Pencil..... THE reason I bought an iPad and without a doubt the best way to draw digitally (I use pro equipment as a hobbyist and this stuff beats a cintiq now). But even with pencil support there’s a lot separating these beasts out. I’m trying very hard not to get the 12” iPad (is it???) Pro right now when I should wait for them to update. Lol.

Only 2GB DRAM with no future proofing and that has to be upgraded in a year? 2GB is what's standard on $40 Android devices.

The 4GB Acer ChromeOS pen tablet is making much more sense since it can be used in tablet mode for preschool and early elementary then with keyboard/mouse for higher elementary up to high school. No need to disrupt kids' education by switching ecosystem in the process.

But an iPhone X with 3GB ram destroyed every android phones with 6-8GB ram so don’t say that this 2GB ram isn’t futureproof. Android tablets died years ago.

And as we know Android totally mismanaged ram so this iPad will continue to blow that 4GN android tablet away

iPad Air 2 (2014) is still better than this "New New" cheapo iPad and was cheaper ($299 on Black Friday 2 years ago)

I got a refurb iPad Air 2 that was for all practical purposes brand new and even had Apple Care on it. However, I was given a iPad Pro 10.5 by my staff recently and I surprised how much better the experience has been on that model. So, Yeah iPad Air 2 is now showing it age pretty well. It does have the laminated display which makes the display better than the the last two iPad releases. But it's certainly isn't better than the iPad Pro 10.5 which is brighter and with the 120 refresh rate when doing really graphic intensive stuff it way better. However, my kids still use the iPad Air 2 and it's nothing wrong with it, for me now I'd be settling for less if I had to use it and for some folks that is okay. By the way the 4 speakers are really nice too. I use my iPad Pro 10.5 every single day for several hours a day.

It's obvious what the differences are between the iPad (2018) and the 10.5" iPad Pro (2017), but at this moment in time, you are not getting an iPad that is twice as good for double the cost (just about).

This is why I reckon one or two things need to happen soon (3-6 months).

The current 10.5" iPad Pro needs to be reduced in price considerably to around £450-£500 (from £619) and or Apple release a brand new 10.5" iPad Pro with a considerable upgrade in hardware (A11X or A12, FaceID, smaller bezel etc)

Part of Apple's business model is upsell small improvements for high price.
For example, storage capacity.

They 10.5 iPad is not going to get cheaper. Might even go up in price if they do a major hardware refresh.

I generally agree....but at this moment in time.....if you want a full size iPad (9.7" and above), you're 3 options and starting prices are:

iPad (2018) - £319
iPad 10.5" Pro - £619
iPad 12.9" Pro - £769

Apple in recent years have started creating a full range of options for the consumer at varying price points, yet with the full size iPad, there just isn't an option in the middle...ie. where iPad began...in the £400-£500 range.

The majority of sales going forward from now on will go to the new iPad at £319, which has a lower profit margin than the Pro's....I just don't see Apple enhancing the Pro line and keeping the price the same or higher...and leaving the middle market empty???

I don’t know... they must know what they’re doing. Apple are exquisitely good at making money. They probably have entire departments dedicated to price point/sales analysis... :)

Was hoping they'll update the iPad Mini as well, pencil support and A10 would be nice. Looks like i will have to wait a bit longer... o_O
I think the iPad mini is pretty much dead. I wouldn't hold my breath for a refresh. Not now, not ever.

I think I will still stick with an iPad Pro for the laminated display and Promotion. I write on my iPad Pro every day, and having a worse display will likely start to get annoying very quickly. It's one of those things which I probably won't save on.
