If this rumor is true, I don't see the point of keeping the 11" and 13" Airs. Sounds like this is a perfect replacement for both... It also simplifies the decision making process for consumers and reduces costs for Apple.
I just bout a Macbook Air 11" today. Should I return it? When do you guys think it will be released?

So i guess after WWDC we will have a 12" MBA joining the 13 and 15" MBP and the 13" classic MBP will be discontinued.

Sorry, can you tell me how to do the 3 finger drag? I'm putting three fingers on the trackpad and sliding them while on a window but nothing's happening.. Excuse my ignorance.

In System Preferences, select "Trackpad", then check the box "Three finger drag". You'll then be able to drag files, folders etc using 3 fingers. Voila!

I don't get why anyone actually clicks to click something, tapping is so much easier and less straining over time.

I agree, I'm always surprised that this enabled by default in Apple stores, and normally enable it when I'm trying out the shiny Macs. Just seems to be less tiring, as is also quieter in an office environment. I hate noisy typists!

Not until July at the very earliest

I doubt we would see this until July, even if it were announced at WWDC. It's more likely to be September / October if using some almost-ready lower power Intel chip, but if it's mainstream low power Broadwell, I wouldn't expect to see it until 2015..

Thank you!!

Yes, I agree. I think all these should be checked by default. There are a lot of little tweaks like this that make OS X better but the majority of people will never find them. I think they should just be standard.

Will this be Apple's answer to MS Surface?

I'm curious whether this will be some kind of response to the MS Surface Pro.

A few guys where I work have the got the Surface Pro, and it's an interesting idea, although I don't feel it's quite what I'm looking for in a device. For a start the screen is just too small for a 1920x1080. It's quite sharp, but way too small for extended use via the Windows 8 desktop. Yes, you can connect to an external via miniDP, and in my opinion this would be necessary to avoid eye strain.

It isn't great as a tablet because of its weight, but would be OK on a table, using fingers or stylus.

The fact that it's runs an Intel i5 and has up to 512GB SSD makes it interesting as super portable, and the detachable keyboard gives it some flexibility that a laptop doesn't have (e.g. on an airplane table, as a discrete notepad in meetings etc.).

This new device could be Apple's version of the Surface, but done right. However, I'm not sure we'll see a detachable keyboard and I still see a big problem with using a touch screen with Mac OS X, and I don't think we're ready for an iOS / MacOS hybrid or a converged OS just yet.

It could be a sort of iPad pro with a keyboard, but who would want this just for iOS apps?

I think it's more likely to be an evolution of the MBA, i.e. a super small & light laptop that combines a great screen with portability and reasonable computing power.

No interest in this TBH.
I have a 15" rMBP for my main work and a 11" MBA as my portable machine. Works perfectly well for me!

Did you catch the news that 10.9.3 has new support for retina displays? I bet we'll see one at WWDC.
Yeah I did. And I also think that we will see them this year. Its just a question of when. I would also kill for 17" rMBP. That would make me super happy :)

I do worry about the photographer/designer out in the field who doesn't have an attached display getting a smaller screen (which is why I figured they'd leave the 17", but in a smaller chassis) Overall my message is that Apple really only needs 3 sizes across one line of laptops. 12, 14, 17(or 16) sounds great.
Not just those guys. I keep hearing that 17" is a niche market but a lot of people ask for it here. It may be small on a global scale but its still requested a lot. I would be so happy for 17" but would settle for 16" if there was no alternative. I have 15" now and its just too damn small and everytime I travel I feel so cheated.

btw, as some mentioned, including me, the 17" could almost fit in bezel free 15" chasis (I said almost :) ) but some pointed out that the bezel is needed for things like bluetooth and wifi antennas for the signal. One thing I wonder about. IF there is no bezel, do you think it will work with your eyes perspective? Let me explain what i mean here : The bezel serves as a board for your eyes not to get distracted when you look at the screen. If there was no bezel and you would look at top part of the display would your eyes get slightly strained by the perspective behind the screen? Just thinking here :)

Apple really need a cheaper laptop a la the old plastic MacBook, which were student favourites. No cheap and junky to complete to $299 laptops, but a moderately cheaper option like the 5c.

12" MBA interesting, I wonder what that would do to the 11" and 13" MBA. There's so much overlap its hard to have all three in the line up.

Exactly. I can't see Apple keeping the same line up as they have now, just with the inclusion of a 12" set of Macs. If true, I would guess the line up would be altered somehow.

there will be 12" MBA and 13 with 15" MBP from later this year.
the classic MBP is coming to an end i guess

Speaking from complete ignorance- what stops the laptop getting too hot when playing a game or doing something CPU intensive if there's no fan?

Will this be the Apple product that FINALLY uses "Liquid Metal"? The MacBook T1000! ;-) heh heh heh

Seriously tho, Apple bought exclusive rights for using Liquid Metal in their future products back in 2010. So far the only thing they've made with it is the sim tray remover tool for the iphone.

I keep hearing rumors about liquid metal products in Apple's pipeline, but nothing ever materializes.

Yes I guess so too. I can definately see that happening. One thing that I'm unsure is whether they will just call it MacBook instead of Air and Pro.

Thank god they will be discontinue the classic MBP this year because I feel sorry for those who doesn't know computer and buy the nearly 2 years old tech, HDD, non-Retina and heavier etc... It would be a terrible for first time Mac buyers.

Don't get me wrong, it was an awesome computer back in 2009, but not in 2014, especially for new buyers.

Hope that it would widescreen like the 11". Gotten way too used to it at this point.

they will likely take the 11" air and just make the bezel thinner in order to get the larger display

actually its a great computer now too for the general user who could easily get by with just an iPad. The issue with it is the price being way too high, not usefulness

the same thing that does it in the iPad...efficiency of the design and processors.

Funny I remember I have seen this function but never turned it on. Is this a new feature on 10.9? After reading this news I thought I need to enable this to get used to it :p I really like it so far :)

I think this is the way to go. The trackpad click is pretty nosy.
