At the bottom, it says "None", so I'm guessing there will be custom SMS tones listed there when available.

No, none means no SMS tone...

And I have 4.2b4 on my phone...tried to use a couple of the new sounds tonight and they freaking drove me up the wall. Back to tritone. As I've had since June 2007...

I'm stupid. I don't know why I thought that lol...

Wow. Incredibly bad choices there. Guess I'll stick with jailbreaking for this feature.

At least they tried...? LMAO

I think they're fun... for a ringtone. No way would I ever use one for a text or email alert. Maybe an alarm, but that's about it.

I'm with you on that. I would never use it for text or email. I just don't understand why we can't just make our own sms sound.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

I don't care for the new SMS tones. Theyre all too long & irritating. But I'm glad that Apple is finally giving us more choices. :) It's a step in the right direction.

These tones are perfect if you work at Disneyland.. you could change them each time you go into a different area of the park. :)

But in an office, I'd want to throw my phone at the wall. Thank goodness for jailbreaking.

Surely you'll be able to simply change the extension of an MP3 file like you can a clip from a song, and import it into iTunes?

Like I use the opening from Chuck as my ring tone, so I took the first 30 seconds of Short Skirt Long Jacket, made an AAC copy, dragged it to the desktop, changed the extension to m4r and imported it back into iTunes and it went into the Ringtones section.

After syncing my iPhone, I could use it as a ringtone.

So once we know what extension the SMS tones use, surely we can do the same?

My friends and I used to joke about who could use the most annoying iPhone SMS tone. I wish I had these at my disposal.

GEEZ whats up with that? Why can we not have custom sms assignment of our choice? I thought the stock ones sucked but this tales it to a entirely different level SUCKED!!!!!!!!

You know I made a specific request as allot of others in the dev center have for the SMS assignment to be custom sounds ie.. music..or what ever a I see this has fallen on deaf ears:rolleyes::apple:

Funny and odd thing here is that I just updated to 4.2 b3 tonight on my 3GS and I do not have the additional Ring tones

Epic fail...

Why spend loads of time creating these when everyone is going to stick with tri-tone...

Meanwhile he android community will be rolling on the floor laughing...

Apple get some things so right and other things so wrong!

there is no 'SMS tones' section though. I think, on the phone, they're stored in an entirely different folder, where, without a jailbreak, you basically have no access to

I'd be embarrassed to use any of those .... its bad enough now with the 8 we have that everyone nearby with iPhone tends to have the same small subset but those new ones are horrendous and too long

I seriously might have to Jailbreak for that 1 single feature of getting a custom tones

there isn't one yet, but who's to say that once 4.2 and itunes 10.1 comes out that there won't be one in there?? :p

Listen to the tones (Gizmodo link)

Honestly, they're too long, they sound more like ringtones, now.

MacRumors bot beat you, OP:

Agreed they are too long... i think there was only 1 tone there that i would use as its length was acceptable... i mean think of the occasions when in a meeting you forget to put your phone on silent and then you get a text!

A simple 'ting, ting' or 'beep' is less embarrassing than the long drawn out nightmare that many of these new tones have me dreaming of!!

I have been waiting for CUSTOM tones, as have many iPhone users since day 1... hopefully Apple will implement that ability and not just add new tones!

they could be just there as a place holder, to test the system for additional tones for some reason, notice they're under a seperate section called 'New' to the original stock ones, thats just weird, if these are additional stock ones, why not just have them all in the one section, they've made it look like the custom ringtones section in settings.

so to me, looks like they're gearing up for custom sms tones.

They better be because it's LOOOONG over due. Plus, the tones that I just heard, are ATROCIOUS. Short and sweet is how SMS tones should be.

I really hope you all (and Devs) are going to http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html and saying "New SMS tones are too long/Doesn't seem like the best tones Apple can do"

Hopefully if enough people say it, they can be pushed for better tones (or allow custom ones).

I'd love to have custom SMS tones. The new ones are admittedly a joke, to say the least :/

The Kimmunicator sound doesn't make that good of a ringtone ;)
