Go to a store, local library, school, etc. where they have macs available for you to try out. I don't know of any way to "take one home" and try it out unless you make the purchase and intend on returning it within the specified time frame.

Apple Store... go there, plenty of machine to try out, from iMac to Mac Pro on the desktop line and MacBook to MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
