I hate to say it, but I think the iPod Classic is dead. With all the focus on iOS, I seriously doubt Apple will update the Classic anymore. While it would definitely be a welcome upgrade, if there is an update, it'll be a quiet one. I just think that Apple thinks the Classic isn't sexy anymore.

Don't forget that the iPod Classic can still show videos, which take quite a bit of space.

Maybe Steve Jobs will hold a funeral for the iPod Classic like he did for OS 9.

But lately it occurred to me that with an HD (used for cost reasons vs. massive flash drives), performance would suffer (app load times etc.). Maybe that’s just not a great user experience when people can compare to a smaller flash-based Touch.

Hybrid makes sense: Put the apps and recently used stuff on flash, put the archive (photos, music, videos) on the hard drive. If you just casually use the apps, the hard drive wouldn't even need to power up. Just have the first few seconds of every video or audio file and thumbnails of pictures cached on the flash storage so you don't feel like you have to wait for the hard drive to spin up.

I think its about time to upgrade the ipod classic. The screen on those things are tiny, my uncle has one, and I don't understand how anyone could possibly watch movies on that.. Apple needs to make a bigger screen size on the classics, like what the Zune MP3 players have.. (3.2inch)..

PS: I do agree that the ipod classic is pretty much dead :p.. But i'm sure there are still people who have a large media library, and the ipod touch will not suffice..

So yeah Apple needs to make updates, or scrap it..

iPod Touch will be at least 128Gb, maybe 256Gb next Fall ... granted it might not be more than 160Gb, I GUESS their might be some room for a device like this, but I don't see Apple reverting to the old platform that they seem to have discontinued quietly.

iPod Hybrid

Very cool, I would've loved this back in the day but nowadays people expect iOS... they need to come up with an iPod Hybrid... an 8GB iPod Touch for app/data storage with a 220GB media hard drive. It may not be the smallest device as the Touch's footprint is bigger than the Classic and for obvious reasons the Classic is thicker than the Touch, but I'd pay the price of a 64GB iPod Touch for such device.

If thats the case, then Apple should discontinue it..

In addition to offering a prospective spec bump to the iPod this also offers some other interesting possibilities. If one were to have a MacBookPro with a SSD as well as dual hard drives capable of RAID modes, this would bring very high I/O to the form factor many folks now use as their primary desktop computer.

Add Light Peak and LTE and you have some serious cloud and local compute horsepower.

Rocketman

Usually, but not always. Look at Intel's SSD X25 series: 40, 80, 160, [future: 300, 600]

Any even number can be fit into a flash storage capacity.

Toshiba, Samsung, and the other OEMs tend to make flash blocks and chips in multiples of 8, not 2. But they don't have to. Also note that marketing numbers do not always have the same precision. 1GB=1024MB in some cases, and so forth.

Generally speaking.

man this site's getting boring all of a sudden, is it cliche or is it just another slow month with apple?

Apple still sells a ton of these and they satisfy a market niche that's at least as important as the Shuffle.

Until you can get a flash based iPod at those capacities, it's sticking around - unless Apple simply wants to hand over the high-capacity archive segment of the music player market to everyone else.

I listen to music doing chores and sleeping so I use the Classic. Not having to look at the device to navigate through it is an amazing feature to me, plus the storage capacity. I cannot do this with the Touch which you always have to look at to navigate.

I know Apple hates buttons but with the Ipod classic they're king.

WHO CARES about the old school iPod anymore? -1 Macrumors.

.

That would probably be the people who also care about a larger than 160 GB drive being available for it .... which is pretty much the point of this thread.
-1 for comprehension. :p

With Apple soon to unveil it's cloud based iTunes....really....what is the point of an iPod with a 220 gig physical HD?

...

And when a cloud based iTunes comes out where you can access your music library from any of your Mac products....
Because cloud-based/streaming music is going to be low sound-quality, that's why. I would guess that most of us who have 160gb Ipods are not just freaks who have a ton of music, we are listeners who crave high quality sound and rip our music at much higher bitrates than most people. In order for Apple and the carriers to handle a massive stream of music, it will get crushed down before being streamed to users. It'll be passable, but low-quality. Most people won't care, but some of us will. I revel in hearing great sound quality. I love the idea of streaming, but the times I've played with it (Pandora, apps that access my own collection, etc.) I've been disappointed with the sound quality. It will be years before we get something that approaches audiophile quality.

I stream 256kbps music on my iPhone regularly. It's not lossless but 3G can handle lossless bitrates easy if that's important to you.

That requires a constant Internet connection, doesn't it? Not really close to being available everywhere yet.

Hard drives are on their way out, but not quite yet.

I would LOVE to have a 220 GB iPod. iPod Touches and so on, are nice and all, but for me, I like music. Higher-quality recordings on top of that. A 160 GB iPod classic isn't enough to hold my entire music collection, but a 200 or 220 GB one would. It would be nice to never have to go back to my computer and 'shuffle' things around again.

How the hell is this news? 240GB drives that fit in a 5/5.5g iPod have been around for years.

Those drives are dual-platter and won't fit in the current iPod classic shell...

Toshiba's new MKxx39GSL series comes in 160 GB, 200 GB, and 220 GB capacities, all in a single-platter form factor matching the 5 mm drive thickness used in the current iPod classic.

Says who? What inside knowledge of the Flash market do you possess?

Prices have not come down. There doesn't even exist a 64 gb iPhone yet.

I think you'll need to wait to at least 2012, for iPad 3, to see 128 gb in an iOS portable.

Probably 2013, iPod touch 7, will have a 128 gb option as well.

From what I can see of the market, there is no indication whatsoever that either iPad or iPod touch will receive 128 gb options this year.
