I boomed Top Gun: Maverick… it’s going to be a blast and NEEDS to be seen on a big screen. Honest! The new normal. Probably see fewer theaters in the coming years. But people will still pay the experience when the world gets back to normal. I want to see Top Gun 2 in a theater before my living room.
If we were discussing movies like LOTR quality etc. I would make exceptions. I do agree that there are movies that really need to be enjoyed on the big screen. And that is an entirely reasonable, for you.
Personally, I much prefer to see blockbuster movies on the big screen (no home system is big, compared to a good theater screen), preferably on opening night. I like the spectacle, and the ritual of it, a treat for the senses (I miss the old enormous thousand seat theaters of days gone by). With the current state of the world, though, I can’t imagine stepping foot into an indoor theater with a bunch of random other people, any time this year. Maybe next year.
This is a perilous point for movie theaters and the movie industry. You can’t reasonably crowd people into theaters now, and you can fund $100-$200-million dollar films without getting that enormous box office the first week. And you can’t make it up with day-of home releases (unless you can get everyone to sign on to $50+ day-of home rentals, and many, like you, will balk at $20+ home rentals). And theaters will die off if you even attempt to do day-of rentals.
Well, those people are paying to dine and watch a movie in a theater, not watch a movie at home. It's not the same. This is $20 instead of $5 only because the movie is freshly released.I used to work at one of those dine-in movie theaters and families would easily spend $200 every weekend to see a movie during the summer. For those people, $20 is a steal.
Do they not all have rules against phone usage? Or do you mean banning the phones from entering the theater at all? Some Faraday caging might be good enough.I still like seeing movies on the big screen. But if all theaters banned cell phones, I'd go even more.
Yeah, but where will you take the ladies once the movie theaters are out of business?Unless I am on date with a lady, I don’t buy anything extra at the movie theater.
I wonder if they're even delaying releases because of this. Nothing good is coming out now, except maybe that WWII navy movie MR has reported on. I was excited for the film adaptation of my childhood favorite book, Artemis Fowl, of course until I watched it.And that is an entirely reasonable, for you.

That is a good question. Depending on the lady, I suppose a play, the symphony or live jazz music at a quaint restaurant. No more movie theaters would be missed. It has been the “go to “ date place for 100 years.Yeah, but where will you take the ladies once the movie theaters are out of business?![]()
My girlfriend and I have been missing all our usual activities other than going to the limited restaurants we can now (some are open but not really safe). Used to go ballroom dancing. I don't think plays and symphonies will be active. That is a good question. Depending on the lady, I suppose a play, the symphony or live jazz music at a quaint restaurant. If all else fails, it is always fun to get in the car and drive to a place you have never been. I like exploring. I like daytime dates as much as nighttime. With COVID, we men will need to be more creative with our dating. My girlfriend and I have been missing all our usual activities other than going to the limited restaurants we can now (some are open but not really safe). Once you experience movie theater recliners there’s no going back to regular seats hahaSure they are. For example, the release of the new Bond movie was rescheduled, even though everything was ready - they just shelved it for later.
For the past 5 years of so I only went to the "fancy" cinemas (pic related), where you get a reclining chair, a blanket, and there is less than 50 people in the room, all at a good distance from each other. Sure it's way more expensive, but I get the cinematic experience without anyone munching directly into my ear, nobody's offspring kicking my seat, and no cellphone screens distracting me somewhere from the rows more to the front. It had the best of both worlds - enjoying the movie in peace (just like home) but on a massive screen with great sound.
Unfortunately, the one next to my place was shut down and I will likely be too lazy to drive anywhere - digital distribution is more than welcome.

You can, and I do, bring your own drinks and snacks to cinemas! Just bring a bag with it all in, they never search it, and I'm not sure they're legally allowed to, even if they wanted to. The only concession I spoil my son with is the cinema popcorn, as he loves it, but he's more than happy with our own cans of drinks, and icecreams, and whatever, straight from home, at supermarket prices. So the $8 drinks and $10 popcorn at the theater is OK with you though? $20 is a steal if you have a large family at home!
I like the idea of quick release movies. What i don’t like is the price tag of $20+ dollars. In my opinion, that is too expensive.
Now it’s only a matter of time before they raise the purchase price.

I feel like the large public viewing is part of the experience, but up to you. That does look really nice.Sure they are. For example, the release of the new Bond movie was rescheduled, even though everything was ready - they just shelved it for later.

You’re not going to get “close to day of release” movies without movie theater ticket-like prices. Thinking otherwise is foolish.
Correct, but it is a hell of a lot cheaper to pay $20 to rent the movie, and order a pizza and a liter of coke than to shell out $100+ for overpriced theater food. Assuming you’re cool with your home theater set up. To each their own.Well, those people are paying to dine and watch a movie in a theater, not watch a movie at home. It's not the same. I used to work at an IMAX theater (a real one) that was underground. No cell service in the auditorium was great!I still like seeing movies on the big screen. But if all theaters banned cell phones, I'd go even more.
AFAIK jamming is illegal, but caging to absorb the signals is fine.I used to work at an IMAX theater (a real one) that was underground. No cell service in the auditorium was great!
I think theaters should have a cell service jammer or something so phones won’t work during the movie.
Price gouging really only applies to necessities, not having to wait for a movie to go to streaming/DVD.Buh bye movie theater. I think they have price gouged for so long. Won’t miss it
I don't like having the $20 price tag to only rent it and not have the option to buy it.
