I've been running speed tests using testmyiphone.com since the update. Shockingly, I have not been able to get better speeds than 0.35 Mbps (usually averaging about 0.25). I am in downtown Chicago, so we have decent coverage.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Just got .34 Mbps in downtown Chicago using testmyiphone.com. 1 3G bar.

Prior to 2.02, I was clocking 1.0+ Mbps in the exact location I am currently testing (alright, my chair may have moved slightly). Just tested again w/5 bars in downtown Chicago - 0.3 Mbps w/705 ms latency.

I also just tried the SpeedTest application. Confirms that it is 0.3 Mbps.

There are so many variables in this that it's impossible to attribute slower (or faster) speeds to any one thing. It is highly unlikely that 2.0.2 did anyting to slow down speeds.

or to speed them up either unfortunately. I'm guessing the fix was to help with dropped calls and not much more. Those looking for the holly grail are going to have a long long wait.

I have had 3G mostly off since Thursday, prior to the update. The 3G connection was incredibly slow, and after minor use, becomes unrespinsive. Timeouts, endless data pulls, etc. It is just not worth the aggrivation for me right now, so I have been using EDGE.

I assume this to be an AT&T problem. Hopefully they are beefing up their hardware, because the 3G service here is not acceptable right now.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5C1 Safari/525.20)

just got 1081kbps at work in Huntsville AL, never got over 500 in this spot before the update

I'm in Chicago, and have mixed results so far. I had refrained from updating to 2.01 and with 2.0 I was getting speeds up to 160k/sec from my home where I always got full bars 3G. (Lake and Canal). At my office (Lake and Michigan) I always got edge. After updating to 2.02 at home I get no 3G, but full edge (thanks Apple!), and at work instead of edge, I now get 3 bars of 3G, but slow speeds. So overall, I wish I hadn't updated...

Another one here noticing extremely slow speeds on 3G (50-90 kbps). Occasionally, after a reboot, I'll get my normal 1.2-1.4 mbps, but without consistency.

You assume wrong...it's apple's problem (clearly) as other 3G phones don't have issues like this on the same network.

Also supported by the fact that a reset fixes problems for alot of people, and also further supported by users like me who have never had a 3G problem at all until last night after the 2.0.2 update.

This morning at about 4 AM, I tested both of my phones. One was 1.02MBPS on 3G and the other got 1.55MBPS on 3G. This was in my house with 1-3 bars showing on each.

Our AT&T 3G enabled laptops are not working either, and the ones with Verizon cards are fine. I stand by my assumption that 3G is saturated in my area. If you are not experiencing this yet get ready...

this problem is driving me nuts. AustinSTI, this is not on our heads. I was consistently getting 1.2-1.4mbps before updating to 2.0.2. Now, I get a jumpy 3g signal and as slow as 45kbps. A reboot helps so long as I don't lose the 3g signal to edge.

I think people fail... because information about the update states that they make the "signal" bars more sensitive. i.e. what used to be 2 bars of strength, now will be 4 bars. Basically it fools people into thinking that they actually have a better signal than before.

This is definitely true in my case as well.

I've not done an actual speed test....it's so bad for me I don't need to. It's obvious something is wacky at the moment. I haven't had time to do another restore yet but maybe tomorrow after work I'll have time. For now, I'm back on Edge.

Prior to my update to 2.0.2 3G had always been just fine for me. Sometimes really fast, sometimes not as much but still not bad. I was even using the 3G when I found out 2.0.2 was out as I read it on MacRumors from my iPhone sitting on my couch.

So I go over to the computer and do the update. As soon as I'm done I clicked on the app store to make sure everything was still up to date and it just sits there checking for updates for a good 30 seconds.

I finally closed that and went to Safari to open some webpages.....slow slow slow. Horribly slow. Also tested in some other apps that rely on a data connection.

I tried multiple reboots but right now, Edge is performing better overall for me. Probably a slower data rate but it's consistant and does't experience the latency or hangs that I was getting on 3G.

I tried more today and in different locations in a 20ish mile area and same result.

FYI, here at home, I always have a full slammed 5 bars of coverage that I can't even get to drop to 4 bars by covering it with my hands. Certainly no signal problem.

I get;

Wifi- 7.08 Mbps
3G- 1.54 Mbps
Edge - 0.21 Mbps

My 3g and edge speeds are virtually identical. Somebody please tell me... If Apple's software is causing these issues, then why do so many of us have little or no problems with reception?

OH and btw, if you use inetworktest, they are really on the low end when it comes to speeds. I recommend http://testmyiphone.com/

I just did a test in my office with a few bars of EDGE and 3G enabled and got 56kbs. I turned off 3G and got 90kbs.

Update does not kill 3G speeds

3G speeds are fine here in Dayton, Ohio. After the 2.0.2 update I get 1.27Mbps and that is with 4 bars for reception.

Mine is now significantly faster than it was, but still no where near that speed. With 5 bars of 3G I now get .398 Mbps.

Just a few notes. 3G speed does not just depend of signal strength but more so load on the tower you are connected to. If many 3G phones are trying to pull data off of that tower then the rates are going to drop.

For those with problems on 2.0.2 who just upgraded, try doing a full restore. This has helped some.

Unfortunately, with the 3G network being boggled down a bit as it is in major US cities it is only going to get worse as Apple / AT&T sells more 3G phones. Hopefully AT&T will up the bandwidth their towers can output soon and we can all enjoy at least 700 kbps
