That's an opinion, not a fact, so it's still the people vs you.

Sales and profit prove this is a fact.

Go find me a large % of people who think it isn’t true. I have android devices and android watches, tablets and computers are certainly worse.

I recently got an iPhone 15 Pro and finally have more RAM than my 12 mini, so I could properly give Private LLM a try with a 7B model. Not too bad. If I’m going to use AI on my phone, this is how I’d want to use it. Keep it local, keep it private, and keep it turned off until I actually want to use it.

It doesn’t need to be “always there” spouting inaccuracies and being useless with ill-deserved confidence as it acts as gatekeeper for your content and moderates all the fun out of your life.

Honestly, at this point, all I really want is the really basic stuff to work seamlessly. But it just doesn't. I don't care that much about advanced AI. But if I want my phone to convert cups to grams when cooking, or tell my Apple Watch Ultra to start an outdoor walk workout I just want that stuff to work. But 1/4 of the time it fails for whatever reason. Dictation is still pretty useless. Honestly it's stunning how bad Siri is, let alone the AI elements.

Why would they lose billions every quarter? Investments in Apple Intelligence are baked into the price of the devices. And Apple could always sell a subscription for a Pro version or tie it into iCloud+
Because Anthropic is haemorrhaging money and don't have a sustainable business model. That's quite clearly why Apple haven't purchased them. They're spending billions of investors money to stay afloat.

They have great LLMs especially for coding and some brilliant ideas (they invented the MCP that OpenAI then integrated) but currently it costs them more to run them than they get from revenue. They can't charge anymore - they already have a $200 a month plan that lots of people run out of credit on. They're effectively trying to stay in the game against Open AI and hedging on the fact models these powerful will become much cheaper to run before they run out of money.

Siri can’t even start playing the right song or tell the weather.

I've been trying Gemini pro and it still makes things up constantly. For example, I was having it read a death certificate from the 1940s and it made up a story about the death happening from a lawn mower, when it was an aneurysm. That was not in the source document (or anywhere) and it wanted to create a narrative, and for what? To entertain me? It was complete nonsense. I fear for the people trusting AI for their work.
I’ve been using both Gemini and ChatGPT - for my use ChatGPT is so much better. The Siri brand must be cursed.

They've had waaaaaaaaay too long to "get it right".....they should just admit they can't accomplish it and use someone elses AI, this has been an epic fail since they promised a "better siri" last iPhone iteration.
This article is sort of a admission they are too late and are buying services from
Google and rebranding it.

What would Jobs have done better over the past 15 years?? Lets see... No idiotic notch BS. no keyboard issues and recalls. no removing useful ports then reapplying them. No falling far behind in the AI race as they are with the Siri garbage. No chasing every gimmicky thing the competition is doing. Most importantly, by now, he most likely would have invented additional products that the world didn't know they needed, but yet, ended up transforming the world.

Apple is a mess right now precisely because they don't have strong leadership, especially visionary leadership. Imo, Apple's success over the past 15 years is still all because of the foundation and legacy that Jobs created.
Apple Watch and AirPods were both pretty transformational products that inspired the rest of the industry.

Lots of things that used to work in Siri do NOT, under their current AI model.

Asking "what date is 40 weeks from today" results in random and often wrong results.

Asking to play a podcast by name often comes up with a random song I care not to listen to.

And Siri doesn't understand shortcut automation quite often.

Hopefully they get help, because right now the interface and experience is frustrating in ways it never was before

Good decision by Apple. It's simply too late to try develop an in-house model. I use ChatGPT but Gemini Pro is solid, and there is a lot of hype around version 3.0 about to drop. Now Apple will have to develop a good hand-off technology / privacy wall when a request needs to leave Apple's chips (both locally and at the Apple data center) and hit the big boy Nvidia chips at Google.

So… two years after they announced they developed an incredible on device/private compute cloud system that will transform Siri to do so much more, they give us…. Gemini…”lite”

It’s wild that Apple hasn’t figured out how to do a LLM after years of development. WTF are they doing over there?
Really, aside from maybe chip development, I’m not seeing anything productive from this company at all.
I guess when you’ve got market momentum and people just buy your stuff due of social pressures you don’t really have to invest in improving anything beyond moderate iterations. Cash is king. That is all.

It actually isn't but Apple has stumbled and needs to answer wall street's cry for something AI. This is the work around. Ideally you want Apple doing this. Software/hardware integration right? That's apple. But nope, let's use google's version. This isn't a new siri or anything apple promised. It's going to suck trying to integrate a third party AI with iOS. Frankly this should embarrass the hell out of Apple. Remember, Google was caught flat footed as well when chatgpt first debuted. It's not like Apple didn't know either. Google doubled down and invested in developing Gemini. Apple? Crickets. Empty promises after more time passed and they panicked a couple years ago.

Not good...
I think, realistically speaking, the only way for Apple to be an actual contender in this race would be to literally invest billions in it.
Money talks, and it's clear you need to pay millions to get the most capable developers to work for you.
Meta snagged a lot of talented people with this strategy, and I think Apple needs to do the same.
I don't think it'd be a good strategy to just leverage other tools.
This would make apple look week and incompetent, and I personally think it's squallid they haven't been able to create a real AI assistant, as I have seen much smaller companies having developed successful LLMs.

I just hope it's voice language understanding will be heaps better than gemini's. I find chatgpt a million times better when it comes to natural conversations than gemini..
Yeah been having issues with Gem on my pixel 8 Pro that I did it with their old Assistant.

Honestly not a fan of either AI solution from Apple or Google at this point.

I often want to ask both, " did you even listen or understand my question?"

There could have been so many use cases to improve Siri even without Gemini or ChatGPT. Just use it. Try to change an active alarm clock by 15 minutes with Siri. When you have one active and five inactive alarms clock set Siri will read out lout any of the six settings instead of just changing the active one.
