Maybe some of those aftermarket in dash DVD player with the flip out/up screens would make this. It could replace your stereo and stock GPS with a touch screen that is in concert with your iPhone.

Look up an address on the phone. Get in the car and it is ready to navigate to your last found destination. I was hoping something like that could have worked with existing Garmin GPS'.

Could be. In the end though, all I'd really want is just mirroring of the iPhone screen to my in dash display. That way I could use any app, like Google Maps, etc. I already have the Siri integration in my car which works OK. I'm sure what Apple is doing here is nice though.

For those who take mass transit only and don't own a car, I guess thanks for letting us know you won't use this feature and contribute nothing else to this thread.

However, I'm looking forward to this and will surely use it.

- Has no keyboard UI - voice recognition as input

I was kind of concerned about this until I watched the video. It looks like input via the phone's keyboard is still supported. Trying to get voice recognition to pick up on specific street names sounds like a problem, but as long as you can spell them out on the phone it sounds good.

Looking forward to using this with my AppRadio 3. Already do stuff along these lines with it but an integrated implementation will be nice too.

Yeah, I might even be willing to give up my Parrot Asteroid Smart (Android-powered smart radio) if Apple's solution delivers.

What I want in a car-based solution:

- fast and responsive
- not physically tethered to the phone (I don't always dock/charge my phone for quick trips)
- has some base level of smarts when the phone isn't connected/present
- play an MP3 library from a USB source
- Bluetooth audio streaming from the phone
- Bluetooth phone call interface

The Parrot does all this but I miss the hard-buttons that were on the AppRadio 3.

Buy-In

It's amazing that auto makers will buy into this. My dealer currently gets $300 a year out of me to update the maps in my built-in Navagation system, not to mention the big-bucks they charged for it in the first place. I wonder what incentives Apple will have to provide to manufacturers to make this happen.

hopefully apple sells a stand alone device that can be added to cars!

They already do. It's called an iPhone. It's in your car every time you might need it.

New Video Shows 'iOS in the Car' Functionality from iOS 7.0.3 in Action

Smaller than the 17" touchscreen in the Tesla Model S, which I got to drive a few weeks ago. Of course, there's also the iPad mini.

Are those easy, cheap installs? I would venture to say no. I wouldn't want to just mount an iPad. I would want it built into the currently display area.

Not really, but people still do it. I've seen installs where people basically put in a 1-DIN radio but recess it into the cavity a little bit, so the iPad (or some other small tablet) can clip on over the radio but still look relatively flush to the car's dash. The smartest mounts use magnets so it's easy clip-on, clip-off. The more elaborate installs involve custom faceplates and Dremeling.

The car radio (and steering wheel controls) still let you access CD and AM/FM radio, and the tablet takes care of the rest -- internet radio streaming, GPS, mapping, etc.

Here's a nice install:

I considered that route but decided that an off-the-shelf Android powered car radio was good enough for my needs.

Is this expected to be supported through the third party (ie: Pioneer App Radio and the like) or will I have to buy a new car to get this functionality?

It is expected, as 'Siri Handsfree' and Airplay is all third party supported.

I'd hope Pioneer has
1. New head unit coming out, hopefully slim-lined of all the other AppRadio garbage, and running just this.
2. A firmware update for AppRadio 2/3.

My wishlist.
1. 6+ inch touch (can't decide smooth responsive capacitive touch, or glove compatible resistive)
2. AM/FM/HD Radio tuner built in
3. Bluetooth audio.
4. iOS in the Car via wireless link, maybe using hybrid version of airdrop protocal?. For short distance, a new local place I want nav to find... I don't need a power link. Just leave device in pocket. Power hookup can be separate as far as I'm concerned, but nice option to have.

That's it. CD optional, not necessary. Line in, if it's hidden around back maybe for someone to route to their glovebox. I'd like a clean front.

It's amazing that people buy into built-in navigation systems. For a while, I would just buy a new Garmin every year or two and get the latest maps, and hand down the old one to someone else. Now, I have my choice of phone-based systems that are always up-to-date. With car stereo integration, there's really no point in a dedicated, money grabbing system.

Nailed pretty much my wish list. Although I have AppRadio 2, I wouldn't be upset if I had to buy a new AppRadio unit. I think all of their current offers kind of suck. Their NEX line is garbage compared to what I need. Just give me a screen with options above. Simple as that and I'll even pay $400 for it so Pioneer can make even more money on it.

Will be interesting to see what 3rd party stereo manufacturers do with this.

Also, would Apple bother to build "head units" ? It would be great if they did, but the problem is the sheer amount of variation in dimensions and connections in cars.

This area is like the smartphone area was back in 2007. Clunky crappy software in cars. It's amazing how even high end cars have software that's like the menu system of a 2002 DVD player.

It would be great if forthcoming head units used the 3g/LTE from the iPhone to download software updates to the unit. I'm sure they're gonna need to tweak and refine - that'll be what keeps things looking good and working.

Alpine needs to have a product that's

6.5" Touch Screen running this software
Bluetooth microphone and small in car external bluetooth (or wired) button that can be steering wheel mounted (for hands free control)
Price around $250.

fixed that for you

Time to go buy a new car...

Prepare to drop an extra 3-4k for the "technology package" which is likely the only place this will be included.

Automakers are notorious for marketing any type of tech upgrade into packages that cost several thousands of dollars, this will be no different.
