cant you just do it by saying:

1) they have made less than 2 posts

2) and havent been active in the past 6 months?

surely that must be easy enough to find all those people and also i think that would be a pretty fair purge? if they havent been active in 6 months they clearly are not coming back!

That's Lacreo.

Lacero disappeared with no explanation exactly one year after his arrival.

And let's not get started again with the Lacero/Lacreo conspiracy theory...

oops! stupid me, i forgot about that. how confusing!

Maybe one way to address this issue would be to change the rules from now on; e.g., make it clear that accounts with no activity will be deleted after 6 months. Anyone who doesn't log on after 6 months has probably forgotten their user name and password, anyway. In another way, why does it matter? Maybe there are more newbies now because of the Intel switch - more folks interested in the site, etc. I, too, get frustrated at hastily written/poorly thought-out posts/threads, but it doesn't need to ruin the day. "Breathing in, I am peace. Breathing out, I needn't respond to newbie's post."

It doesn't really matter to me, but I can imagine getting rid of some of the dead weight might help the server load a bit when people do things like looking at the Members List.

I could get behind a purge of members with zero posts and no login within the past year.

6 months for everyone is to strict, If I go on a 6 month vacation I get the boot? The only way to do it is if you sign up and don't post 5 times within a year your account gets deleted.

Nope...completely disagree with this one. There are plenty of people who come here regularly to read the forums but don't post. That's fine, and those people shouldn't be kicked out.

I second the act. You could even extend the login time to two years.
If they have zero post and haven't logged in in 2 years, it's probable safe to assume that their never coming back.

Though it's really up to Arn. I think it's a good idea but probable wont see any speed or performance benefits.
Just a little tidier and few thousand less members.

It was just a suggestions, but one that's not unreasonable. You don't have to post, you just have to log in. And, 6 months was kind of arbitrary - could be a year or more, whatever.

If it helps out the server significantly, purge people that have been inactive for 6 months and have less than 2 post imo.
If it wouldn't help the server much, just leave them.

it wouldn't help the server at all. They don't take up any CPU cycles or put more pressure on the MySQL database not significant.

Here's what should happen:

Arn should just wipe the slate clean. Cancel every account and then open up every account name. Let's have a name grab free-for-all. I could think of a couple names I'd like to snipe ;)

Newbie Support

I have read Macrumors for years... harldy ever submitting a post. I think of myself as a semi-knowlegeable mac user, but the fact is that this site is so well supported that someone, usually a lot more knowlegeable than myself will answer a question or respond to a post better than I could. I click on links to help support the site, and im sure other newbies do too. It seems illogical to eliminate a revenue stream for the site simply because people don't post. I know I will continue to wait to post until I have something substantial to contribute.

I couldnt agree more. I browsed a while before posting.... and when i did post, it was a question. I was new to the game..... i had no insight on any rumors, and hardly ever got to a question that i could answer in time to actally answer it. what was i to post about. Is there a chance that there are quite a few uneccessary posts around this place? Yep. some from me too. I dont wanna be a newbie or member or regular forever..... i do love this place though. thanks macrumors!

But you logged on right?
The would only get deleted if you haven't logged in a year or two.

That's true. Now image all of those new newbies all posting 2 posts a day  This place would move too fast to keep up with.

The more members we have like you, McCord9 and taytho, the better MacRumors gets.

We understand that it can be hard for some new members to make their first post. If they have a question, they might worry how to phrase it to get a good answer, worry about being teased for being "dumb" (even though "informed" is not the same as "dumb"), or worry that they'll post in the wrong forum or violate some rule they don't know about.

Most members are quite helpful, and questions can usually be answered. We do have a lot of forum rules, but mostly based on common sense and courtesy, not meant to be overly strict or intimidating. People who mistakenly violate a rule usually have the problem fixed for them by a moderator or get a polite reminder. And threads in the wrong forum are not a disaster and are easy to fix; they just run more risk that people who can answer a question won't see it.

So we hope new members will speak right up when they have something to ask or tell the rest of us.

However, the increased DB size could cause the server to use virtual RAM more often and cause more strain on the hard drive as it has to look harder to find each user's DB entry.

When I first joined I would just browse maybe ask the odd question. That is why i have such a low posts per day count all those months with no posts....I post a couple times a day now.:D

ok...just posting to increase my number of posts. That and to say that after asking a question in the New Folks section and getting no answer...I sometimes feel its easier to search for the answer and if none - try to work it out on my own. :D

It is odd and troublesome to see so many users with no, or super little posts- and half of them have not been back to MR in a few years.

Tell me about it, take a look at this guy. He hasn't been on since 12-31-1969 @ 07:00 PM. And not one post. So sad.
