What's the point of a purge? Who cares? None of the infrequent posters are hurting anyone, and there are plenty of reasons why they might not be posting regularly. So what?

While surely there are plenty of users who never come around and never post, how can we distinguish between them and the regular readers who just don't feel like posting, for whatever reason. And even if we could, why would we bother?
