Contrasts

WOW, YOUR contrast is so different than mine... makes me think it might be software... who knows... i dont want to start that whole debate again

thanks

The first three are displaying the picture fine. The last one shows the angle that i get the negative effect at. The weird thing it appears to be only one way flipped that i get the negative effect facing downwards. If i was to flip the ipod 180 degrees i would get the negative effect if i tilted it upwards not downwards. So in short, I have the negative effect but not at a normal viewing
angle.

15 or so degrees seems to be where i get it at. Anyone else have the same thing?

I was watching my Sony 17" WS LCD and it gets that effect at 50 degrees. Actually, negative blacks at an angle of greater than 15 degrees is normal for an LCD screen.

Congratulations, you have a good iPod Touch - enjoy. (I'm enjoying my new iPhone immensely right now).

maybe it's just the way it's photographed? and the ambient lighting?

That last pic is not 15 degrees, it's more like 60 degrees. The viewing angle looks great to me, nothing there to complain about.

Got mine today. 16GB engraved. 9C738. No screen issues. No dead pixels.
Of course, the stainless steel back has ALREADY started to scratch, but what the hell-still lots of fun!!

Sir. Cheesecake

Sir. Cheesecake can you take some more pictures...

Possibly with the ipod and camera resting on the table so the images are a bit more stable.

Also might want to get in a room with better lighting and turn the flash off..

You first picture had very good image quality (On the desk charging)

BTW, on the messed up iPods if you tilt it down and to the left (like you were doing in most those pics) that will usually stop the negative black effect.

Lets try and get some straight on pics.

So lets see if this is it, all week 38 Builds are Macy Gray while the others' are Corinne or sumthin. Mine had Corrine on it and I have week 37. I have the screen issues, I talked to Apple about it and they said they didn't have any at my local store and all they could do was a refund (which I don't want). So I'll wait til like the week before my Homecoming (oct.6th) to see if they have good ones in, I need something nice to show off with my group.

But it is all good on the other side. Pictures look great (except for that Jay-Z Black Album art) and Music plays just nicely. I have noticed a few bugs here and there but overall not too bad, I don't have any hissing that I can hear. I love it and can't wait til they get that screen issue fixed.

The "Macy Gray Theory" is not absolute. I purchased a Week 37 Touch ("Corinne" Box) from a NYC Apple Store, and I thought that I didn't have a bad screen because almost everything looked fine except for heavy blacks. I didn't get much noticeable negative effect either, even when viewing videos.

I received a Week 38 Touch (also "Corinne" Box) from the Apple Online Store. I've been doing further side-by-side comparisons, and for those of you who think the Week 37 Touches are perfectly fine, like I did -- make sure you get yours exchanged at some point. Absolutely.

You really can't understand what a vast improvement there is in shadow detail and display of blacks on my Week 38 Touch compared to my Week 37 Touch unless you do an in-person side-by-side comparison of identical images/video. Remember, I didn't really experience "negative" effects and I had thought bright colors were fantastic, and after a while I convinced myself that I was not in the "problem" group. I'm incredibly relieved that I was able to see side-by-side and not "settle" on the Week 37 screen quality.

Thanks for the advice, that's good to hear. I had a week 37 touch too, and whilst I thought at first I could settle for the screen quality, I decided today to take it back. I didn't think I had the 'negative' issue, as the problems only arose when viewing very heavy blacks. After a while, even this got annoying, so I took it back today. I had decided not to buy another, as I had come to the conclusion that all the screens were going to be like this, but after hearing triela here, I have decided to order another direct from apple. Hopefully I'll get a week 38 touch. :D

as close to straight on as i could get without it being super blurry and funky.

Thanks for the photos, Sir. Cheesecake, it looks great! But do you perhaps have a macro setting on your camera (the flower)? It should clear up the blurriness.

That looks like motion blur to me, rather than focus. If Macro mode doesn't help, try "Tv" mode or whatever your camera calls Shutter Priority at 30 or 40 (30th-40th of a second) for the best chance without a flash. Otherwise it's a matter of either a tripod, or place it on a flat surface and use the self timer to take the shot.

Looks like a combo of motion blur and being out of focus.

Look on your camera for a little flower setting.

Also try to grab something to rest your hands on while taking the picture so it is not so shaky. A stack of books work great. Either that or invest in a tripod.

shaky or not, thanks for that picture sir cheesecake! it definitely looks like the screens are better. i'm glad Apple got their act together :D

Mine just came, its a week 37 with Corinne Baily Rae and its defective, same as the week 36s. Its definatley safe to say that before week 38, they are mostly defective.
Edit: I just called an apple store and they said they are aware of the problem and if I make an appointment at the genius bar I can get it replaced.

Testify! I just did the same thing. I compared my week 36 Touch to my now week 38 Touch that just got here today ... same boxes. And the difference is AMAZING. There's no friggin' way the "Genius" and his "boss" at the Apple Store can say that it's not a hardware issue now, this is just ridiculous. I'll try to post photos later tonight.

I just looked at my online invoice for my Touch that is going to arrive tomorrow and it is a week 37. :(:( Man I am so bummed right now. How in the world could I get a week 37 and everybody else got a week 38.

Simply amazing the difference. Both taken from directly above, the same distance away.

Just got the last one yesterday in the Regent Street Apple store London. It's week 37 with Cory whatever in the cover, so I guess I'm screwed. I can not test it because is for a birthday present and I don't want to open the box -- I guess I'l have to when my girl is not looking. Anybody round here from the UK that bought one from the Regent Street store have any comments???

Yeah me. I got one of the first ones on Tuesday afternoon when the store re-opened after the iPhone aanouncement. It had the screen problem. I took it back the next day but all they had in were week 37s.

The (very helpful) Apple store guy let me open another one and look at it but it had the same problem. I got my money back. I'm now waiting for the iPhone instead.

Good luck with yours.
