So much for a stellar environmental record!

Get some perspective here. It's totally insignificant.
The amount of plastic in such a watch (which would be used for years) would be miniscule compared to the amount of plastic thrown away every single day in disposable food and product packaging, storage boxes, kitchenware, whatever.

Regardless of the fate of this rumor, I remain surprised that SE hasn’t followed in the more colorful footsteps of their more entry-level, more plastic hardware. I suspect the market - especially a younger demo - would react well to a super colorful, sub $200, SE.

While I’m here, I also thought the entry-level AirPods would have already stepped into the same super colorful space. Alas…

Keep in mind, this colorful perspective is coming from a guy who has always, until the Ti 15 Pro, gone with the Space Gary/darkest iPhone every year. 😂

If $199 is the base price for the kids watch that’s still way too expensive. That is going to be unbelievable theft Mom I got my watch stolen. Apple better think long and hard before offering that price range it’s gonna be a disaster.

Sure. It doesn't end up looking like bright, glossy plastic, though. Unless you paint it.
plastic lands up looking pretty bad after a while. After your abrasion of rubbing etc. it will eventually we’re down to a very thin state. As long as they don’t use materials that are harmful in the support of the fiber supporting the plastic there’s no reason to use it. Aluminum down Through years have gone through a process of having the ability to electric coat colorization. But that’s only surface only. If you scratch it yeah you can see the bare aluminum. So I guess we’re caught in a catch catch problem here. Do we stick with aluminum which is higher cost or drop down to plastic or come up with something in between that can support the fiber when plastic is used. I would really like to see Apple come up with a new material That is in between plastic and aluminum yeah OK there are some of those exist already. But I want it safe for the environment and also when it’s safe for humans.

It’s useless to a thief, they can’t be unlocked from iCloud. Plus they are trackable in real time with Find My. Kids are stupid but not that stupid.

If the but the existing oveerrun guts of the existing se2 in plastic and could sell it for kids at $99 they’d sell like hotcakes. And providers would be handing them out like candy to get the data lines… good way to lock kids into the ecosystem and lower cellular churn!

1st - will it actually be cheaper? Because if it is a downgrade in materials at the same price or near it, then everyone will call them out on it. Current Apple Watch SE is $279 MSRP, right? Plastic looks cheap and will be perceived that way - so $179 is probably where it should land with cellular. For most people $50 won't be enough off to feel worth it. Honestly they could get rid of the HRM for kids...

2nd - it has to be durable, waterproof, and kid proof.

3rd - They need to improve the family control of the Watches for children usage.

Sure... And a very smart move by Apple. I can see that should Apple want to introduce a lower cost Watch to reach more cost-sensitive customers.

Knowing Apple it would still look great and be rugged.

Of course metal-cased Watches would still be available.

Ugh, plastic.

doesn't eliminate the thief factor...... But 99.00 us is what thinking

Not this parent. I’m an Apple fan largely because they’ve long preferred non-plastic materials. This is another step in the wrong direction, along with phones that can’t be used with only one hand, batteries that can’t be replaced or not offering quality replacement batteries, disposable “courage” AirPods, the dongle game, etc.

Unfortunately I do not know a single person with a bare aluminium Apple Watch which doesn't have a scratched or broken screen. I'd love to get an Apple Watch for my son, but I would prefer to find a second hand stainless steel version than get any model with the Ion X glass, especially for a kid. Imagine how cheap and crummy this Apple Watch would look with a plastic body and a screen protector on.
