"the iPhone 3GS could play back full HD video"

LOL yeah right. Good thing the term HD is meaningless.

It certainly doesn't give current ATV owners a reason to upgrade. I actually find it kind of hard to believe that Apple wouldn't go up to 1080p in a next-generation product.

*cough* Apple is going to replace the 24" Apple LED Cinema Display and the more "professional" matte 30" Apple Cinema Display with a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display. That sounds like a downgrade to me.. :(

I wouldn't mind one for any additional TVs in the house but I'll be keeping my :apple:TV in the living room unless something REALLY revolutionary comes out in this new one.

maybe it won't have 1080p not because it can't outpout videos, but fps for games would be unplayble low?

Hey 1080p would be nice but if the price is right and it has high def gaming, I'd go for it. The tv in my room is only 720p anyways.

I'm not that concerned over the 1080 thing. All else being equal it'd be nice to have, but I have a 50" plasma that only does 720p and it still looks amazing with content that isn't heavily compressed. Of course whether you can resolve the extra detail depends primarily on 3 things:

• How good your eyes are.
• How big your screen is.
• How far away from the screen you sit.

And as I said, the compression quality can make or break any resolution. If you have a limited bandwidth (which is usually the case), you can stream a higher quality 720 signal than a 1080 signal because those extra pixels take more resources to transmit and process.

lol god, so predictable.

No 1080p in new apple product:

"we don't need 1080p!"
"you can't even tell the difference!"
"720p is good enough, quit whining"

reminds me of the last time an apple tv article came up and how people were debating how crappy of a media player it was cause it literally supported no formats.

"what the hell is mkv?"
"the only people who use mkv are pirates"

Not hard to believe at all. Apple knows the position they're in and they know that they have enough fans that will upgrade next year when the 1080p model come out. They will make more money putting out a 720p model, knowing full well that enough people are going to buy, and then upgrade to the 1080p model.

Some people will defend Apple no matter what. It's fascinating.

Do the maths: In one of its next incarnations, this thing is going to replace the Mac as a server/backup device for the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch.

That's a really interesting idea actually. People are not happy about needed to tether all these iDevices to a Mac or PC desktop (which is hundreds to thousands of dollars). Some people don't even want a desktop machine at all. Hopefully fully wireless syncing is the future, but if they can make this $99 device the sync point, as well as it performing other useful media functions, it would be a lot less painful for many people.

I don't and haven't for about 6 years! He has a point, tv is a dying media.
Not to sports fans.

If you don't have cable or satellite, you're basically screwed if you like watching sports. The only major sport that has acceptable broadcast network coverage is the NFL (Monday Night Football has moved to ESPN though). There's a little bit of PGA golf and Nascar, but you can pretty much forget about the NBA, MLB, NHL, and getting a good selection of collegiate games.

I actually see more people wanting 1080p in this thread. I also think it should support 1080p even though I was discussing the difference between 720p and 1080p when it comes to viewing distance.

They can't call it itv
Itv is a tv channel in the UK

iTV? That's going to be a big lawsuit.

iTV lol

Nice work researchers :D

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (S60; SymbOS; Opera Mobi/499; U; en-US) Presto/2.4.18 Version/10.00)

ITV network in the UK are going to be upset. They were when Apple announced the working title.

Really people? Apple is more than aware of this I assure you. It was originally called iTV but was renamed to Apple TV due to those exact reasons! If they are going to rename it again to iTV now I'm pretty sure it is because they have worked out a deal!

Um last i check netflix Hulu stream in 720P and 90 percent of the tv stations stream in it as well so your basicly saying that most of HD providers have blown it.. come back and try again.

720p should be fine.
Most people can't distinguish 1080i from 720p anyway.

Since none of the content on iTunes is 1080p why would they need to support it? If it doesn't have onboard storage then it'll only play iTunes content... right?

Best reply to his quote, took all the words out of my head and mouth! Guess 90% of HD content providers fails.....

No 1080p?

Holy crap is that LAME!

That's your opinion. 720p might be fine with you but not to others with higher definition televisions.

Would I prefer 1080p??? OF COURSE, but 720p is not a deal breaker. My TV is 42" so I shouldn't really notice any difference. When I do get a bigger TV though, and for those that already have 55"+ then they could see a little difference.

Obviously when they support 1080p, iTunes content will go 1080p as well qrayg!

I really want 4K TVs and content though thanks! :)

I am really excited for this new iTV though! PLEASE come out this year! I'll get one for every TV if it is only $99.00! :D I can't wait to play games on my TV with my iTV and my iPhone or iPad as the controller! :D

Ooooh, and ONE MORE THING Steve!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it so we can toss a video with a flick of a finger from our iPhones, iPod Touch, or iPad onto our TV and have it start playing on the big screen :)

actaully that is starting to become false as well

I can watch basically any game I want MLB at bat I got that on my mac iPhone/ps3 NBA League pass iPhone NHL all have ways you can watch or listen to games online. NFL Streams audio Hopefully Video comes soon.

Pity about 1080, but maybe in the next model. It doesn't mean the thing is useless, just crippled (par for Apple these days).

I still say that if this is going to employ the tech in the iPhone-iPad-iEtc, why not have all the iDevices be iTVs as well? Get iTV on everything so we can use our phones and pads and pods to download in the day, store, and show at night.

Let's face it: TV sucks. I'd rather buy my 3 or 4 shows every year and watch when I want without commercials and station IDs and such crap. TV as it was/is with cable is about to die, and well it should. The commerical-whore aspect and the political-mush-propaganda-force-feeding has to come to an end. Entertain me or GTFO. Inform me with facts or GTFO. Tits or GTFO. Yeah. If Apple can get me there with their products, I'm there.

"the iPhone 3GS could play back full HD video"

Did they take in account the TV resolution compare to the iphone 3GS resolution? Or am I missing something?

Beside I don't know what is the fuss about, iTunes doesn't have 1080p and streamed contents are not in 1080p. Why would "iTV" have to support 1080p?

Is fine as it is.

Its not the same!!!

The British channel is itv in all lowercase. This is not the same as apple's to be product name iTV.

Any fool can see that itv and iTV are completely different when it comes to the ASCII character set.

WIth DirecTV you can get superfan to watch all NFL games on your iphone...
