evilcat, not to start yet another conversation about screens (I've read my fair share), but I just want to encourage you about the glossy iMac screen. I poured over reviews, forums and even screen solutions for months actually before I bought my 24" iMac. I was actually planning on getting an anti-glare sheet to put over it when I bought it. I hated when Apple stopped offering matte on many of its computer models -- especially the laptops, as it seems that would be quite obviously a good option there. And of course I kind of still hate that they don't offer a choice any more on certain computer models like the iMac.

However, I will say that now that I have the iMac, I really love it. The colors are good and it's extremely bright. I do recommend downloading a program called Shades. It makes those early mornings or late nights much easier on the eyes. It's a really bright screen.

I never did end up getting the anti-glare sheet, as I think it would actually take away from the beauty of this screen. Watching photos from my recent trip to Lake Fontana zoom in and out on the screen saver is simply breath-taking and everyone is always quite impressed.

I do graphic design on this computer (examples: pooshnowb.com, carolinaliberty.com, pilottours.net, hauptgermanytours.com, maidsbyus.com...). I will say that the glossy screen would indeed probably be annoying if I were sitting in front of a window or something. We customized my office, so it is a good environment for most any computer setup. These are pictures I took prior to my current setup with the iMac:

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you. Hope you find what you're looking for!

I have mine (24" 2009 iMac) in an office with windows on two of the walls and the glare is really intolerable.

I hope a matte screen option shows up with the next iMac refresh.

Why Apple is behind...

Everyone seems to be bickering about something a little different with Apples' products. The fact of the matter is we want more for our money without having to switch to Winblows platform. If only Apple could target the consumer more wisely...

The consumer.
E-mail/Web browsing/ Word Documents/ Semi to Professional/ Picture/Video/Audio/Graphical editing/ Gaming..the list goes on.

I know you all are going to laugh but I don't even need a 150g hard drive. I currently have an iMac G5 and haven't used half the space on it for Games/Family movies/photos storage of random files etc. 500gigs+ on current iMacs is absolutely unthinkable. So my point...WHY DOESN'T APPLE GIVE OPTIONS??!??! Playing wow on my current machine is intolerable...yes 3-5 fps in a raid. Not having the option on a 1500 dollar machine to upgrade the GPU from 9400 is incredibly insane. I have no need for Blu-Ray/Quad-core but it doesn't seem like too long ago that I got my iMac... I feel like it should be doing better than it is. With that said I'm not going to spend 1000+ on old hardware only to have to get a new one in 2-3 years. :(I've shopped around for a PC and can get something far superior than Apple for far less. My hopes for all of us:apple::apple: are BTO options...

Matte Screen
Quad-Core
Blu-Ray
LED BL
Memory Exp.

The list goes on. C'mon Apple, I've never had a PC and don't want one but the choice seems obvious as of late... :( </3 :apple:

I will need to replace my hard drive soon in my late 2007 iMac so i have taken it apart to see how hard it would be and put it back together again. One thing i noticed is that with the 'glass front' removed the screen itself looks a lot better to me and a lot of the mirror effect is removed. I wouldn't say the screen behind is matte but its certainly less reflective than with the front on.

As i am out of warranty and my superdrive is about dead i have decided purchase a glass cutter and remove the glass screen, leaving only the black border around the edge of the screen as this protects the isight.

I'd like to see some pictures of thise mod of yours.

I really love my matte 20" iMac Core Duo. The screen on it is great.

Those corners are going to be really sharp!! I hope you don't have any kids that could reach up and touch the thing.

I'll throw my $.02 in, I certainly would appreciate a BD drive/burner in the new crop. I do wedding videography on the side, and while I currently still shoot in SD, HD is the logical progression eventually. To be able to give a client a BD disc would be great.

I don't have a Mac yet, but I'm hoping to make the leap soon. They're pricey, and I'm still on the fence of whether I want to get an iMac, MBP or full on MP. I will be running FCP and hopefully a ProTools setup eventually.

Decisions, decisions...

Once i get done i will put some pics up.

No kids no :), i personally dont think that it is made from glass. It has a very light and plastic feel to it. I cant say for sure but i think its just a piece of tinted plastic.

The current base iMac comes with 320GB not 500GB. They also have to deal with production/supply issues. The fact is now days not many HD manufacturers are producing drive much smaller then 320GB for consumers. You see some enterprise drives that are smaller, with encryption, higher speed etc. So by going to smaller drives they actually would be increasing the component cost and not decreasing.

Even Dell's base Inspiron starts at 320GB for this reason.

It is very thin optical quality glass, like the stuff on an iPhone. It will be very sharp when you first cut it. They probably send the corners of the glass through a finishing sander to dull the existing edges.

I stand corrected but my point still being, it would be nice to pay less for an OPTION to downgrade the storage while pay MORE to upgrade the GPU. Upgrading the GPU doesn't exist on the 20." The price point at which I can upgrade a GPU on the 24" is 1800$. For a "consumer product." Incredible. :(

Apple store has been down for an hour and a half. Either their network has taken a dump or we are about to see a very minor product update take place.

OK Apple, new iMacs next tuesday!
Or I'll commit suicide...

Since no invitations have been sent out, it seems unlikely new models will be released next week.

Maybe in November, although it would seem a little silly to release new models only to drop the price for the "Black Friday" sale ... so maybe in December. :)

Question here: does anybody know the estimated release date for the new iMACs are? I am looking at buying one this weekend and I heard that new ones are coming out but I want to know how soon. It is probably here in this 11 page thread but I don't have the time to sort through it. Thanks.

Nobody knows. New iMacs, Mac Minis and MacBooks are rumoured, but the actual release date is up to Apple. Often new releases happen on a Tuesday, but that Tuesday might be next week, next month or early next year. The reports of limited stock availability would seem to point to a release quite soon though.

Quad Core sounds nice. Its about time really. Blue-Ray? I will NEVER EVER get a Blue-Ray Drive in a computer. I know the discs hold more. But I have a back up HDD for stuff like that. I will never watch blue-ray movies on any computer. I know a lot of computers offer them... but I would skip it for a normal DVD drive. We have a Blue-Ray player and a nice big TV for watching movies on.

So if Apple does get blue-ray. Some day. I hope they give you the option to not have it put in. I would never use it.

So, you have no need to make a back up copy of your BD movies or to convert them for playback on other devices such as a laptop, netbook, iphone or ipod?

That's nice. Many of us though do have those needs, not to mention the desire to actually export high def content authored on our Macs.
