iMac Screen

Recently my aunt's iMac screen went completely black. She took it to the apple store and they told her that it would cost her about $700.00. I started doing browsing around and found that iMac's esp. the 24 inch screens are susceptible to getting spots or lines running through their screens.
I was wondering if you knew if Apple took of this issue because I am considering purchasing a "desktop" Mac. Would I just be better off with a mac mini and a separate screen? I don't do professional photo editing or heavy gaming incase you were wondering. However I do like that the iMac has better graphics, a stronger processor, and more hard drive space.

I'm really hoping for a spec upgrade. I mean I can understand why Macs cost so much, but if they will cost as much as they are now at least have some high end hardware (no quad core yet? seriously?)

How old is her unit? She can still purchase Apple Care for the iMac, up until three years from its purchase date - this way, it would be covered. I currently own a total of 9 24" iMacs, two of which were purchased in 2007 - never a problem or glitch with any of them to date.

Speaking of affordability, anyone know why the hell Windows 7 Ultimate is 320 bucks?
I'd rather purchase Snow Leopard Ultimate for $29 - seems to be a better value.

brag about your income and bash apple products...hmmm...maybe you are lost - this is a mac site.

of course it says something that one with so much hate spends so much time engaged with the object of their distaste...

Like all the posts here about Zune and Palm Pre perhaps?

The Mac Pro's case is bland and minimalist. A true phallic symbol would be something like this:

A phallic blast from the past

Actually, you only have a year after the purchase date to buy and activate Applecare.

hey! It's not silly....

Yes I do. It's much, much more comfortable to use a desktop. Yes, you could connect a keyboard and mouse and display to a laptop, and get the same result. But an iMac is much cheaper than that option, and I never take my laptop off my desk, it's silly to pick a laptop over an iMac. For outside the house, I use my iPhone :)

Hey, I didn't want any more heavy desktop because it took up space, the monitor was big and ugly, and it was heavy! hahhahha And you know that's was true!

Now, with iMac, it is something I want since I want to do more videos, web searching, and design websites (watch movies, create music, and edit videos)... I love photography and photoshop is something I am learning to master. The 24" iMac is a must!

my first 5 computers were desktop. They were heavy and I could never take it on the road...

So, Kudos to the pda, iphones, and handheld devices!

Word up! Me too!

I've been saving up for an iMac this would be great

I planned on purchasing an Imac.. Now that i see something new is coming out, I don't know what to do...

I thought the iMac for $1499 would be sufficient to create videos, edit videos, make movies, edit movies etc... I was told I would be better of with the $1799 (GeoForce GT120).

Now, I am hearing Quad i7 Core?? What the hell am I going to do with that??? I don't even own any Adobe software (Cs4, dreamweaver, Final cut pro)... I don't think anyone would need that much power???

Name one person that would need that type of power, except an professional music or video engineer... tell me one person on here needs that?? Ok, someone who loves gaming, ok maybe!

Name someone else and purpose?!?!? go ahead! hahahhaha

Buying a dual core desktop with a DVD today is like buying a rotary dial telephone....

Well, not quite the same ... ;) ... hey, I used those years ago!

But, the message that it's time that Apple start producing their machines with better cpu / gpu on par with machines available from mass market windows vendors -- yes.
And not 'artificially' (my words) constrict or dumb-down their lower-end offering just to make the higher priced Macs seem better. (jmo)

And maybe even a BTO option for quad-core and BR optical (though I don't think I need it myself...)

These improvements would, in my estimation, make the Macs look much more appealing to buyers and esp. crossover switchers from PCs.

Only because Apple (or its users) are stupid.

I must agree with you on this. I'm not going to say the users are stupid, I consider them to be sheepish, not stupid.

So what... you think they just said "Hey! Screw New Zealand! Let's charge more!!!" There's something factored in that you nor I see/know about.
Yes its called middlemen and its name is Renaissance NZ. No Apple does not control our economy... yet. Yes its called middlemen and its name is Renaissance NZ. No Apple does not control our economy... yet.

Although prices are quite high here in New Zealand, the last time I checked they were actually higher in Australia. The opening of Apple's own online store for New Zealand did see the prices drop (along with Renaissance's stockmarket price). Renaissance also took a hit when companies were allowed to bypass "Apple NZ" and import direct from Apple Australia instead ... although I don't know how many actually do that.

The best prices for some models of Apple Macs in New Zealand is from the JB Hi-Fi branches and online store - in some cases the retail price is the same as the online Apple Store's education pricing! (No pre-installed yet Snow Leopard though.)

Only if it's cheap.

The Inspiron 546 with an Athlon X2 is a good deal for around $300. It even has HDMI out. Anything more than that and it goes to a Q8200 or Core i5 750.

Not really. Honestly, name one thing that a dual core cannot do right now?

That's why I laugh at these must be quad core arguments. For the mass majority of apple consumers, dual core will be damn fine, even 3 years in the future.

Access the third and fourth cores. ;)

For the mass majority of computer users, a PowerPC G3 is more than adequate ... the only real problem is idiot web designers who only use the very latest toys on their websites.

The power utility I work for has over 1,000 IBM laptops for all kinds of people doing everything from engineering, and software development to web sites and graphic arts. Not one of them has a quad core in it and they all work just fine on the latest techological developments. All Apple really needs is a little tweak in mHz, memory and Hdd space, plus perhaps Blu-Ray and HDMI, to be quite nicely positioned for the next 18 months.

Does no one in your company have a desktop or workstation? Is everyone happy using a laptop for whatever task they're assigned?

But you're right, if Apple wants the Imac to compete with laptops, it's well positioned.

On the other hand, Dell is selling 3 GiB Core i5 quads for $699.
