Does no one in your company have a desktop or workstation? Is everyone happy using a laptop for whatever task they're assigned?

But you're right, if Apple wants the Imac to compete with laptops, it's well positioned.

On the other hand, Dell is selling 3 GiB Core i5 quads for $699.
It looks like the Core i5 750 systems had their prices adjusted against the older XPS 435 MT that was dropped and the XPS 9000 takes over.

On the business side the Vostro 430 has appeared as well. Under P55 it's amazing how much power you can fit into a Micro ATX system. At 95W for the processor and dropping the northbridge, they're much cooler systems.

There are a few older desktop machines, but most people rush to give them up to get the thinkpad notebooks.

iMacs are brilliant, but ridiculously overpriced. I almost feel ashamed when someone asks me how much i paid for mine

Ayzee don't complaint about the iMac pices there lolol.

Do you know how much do they cost here in Portugal, let me tell you.

for axample, i'm gaddering money to buy an iMac 24' 3.06Ghz...woopie!

in the US it costs 2,199.00 USD thats equivalent to 1,492.34 EUR, this price is little bit more higher then the iMac 24' 2.66Mhz here. Do want to know what's the price for the 24' 3.06Ghz?? lolol

ready??

2,099.00 EUR. Thats 3,092.60 USD......for f*** sake!

i might as well sell my body to buy this!

oh well...gotta get back to work now!

A $500 drop? I don't think so. I hope you already know that Apple rarely drops the prices on anything for any reason. There was a time when prices just went down and you could get an iMac for $800 :).

I'll have to look into it, but it seems to me that when Apple computers, or their GUI, were first introduced they were expensive, i.e. the Lisa. Then they got cheap, i.e. the iMac G3. And now they're on the upswing again. Just a theory. Computers haven't been around long enough to tell.

2K dual processor Mac Pro using standard memory would work for me a 1999, even without the video card

Macs aren't "ridiculously overpriced".

If you check the specs you'll find that most "cheapo" PCs are ridiculously under-spec'ed in comparison. Just a quick flick through the lastest catalogue from the local electronics chain store shows that - slower chips, worse graphics cards, etc. and that's without the inclusion of the Mac's webcam, not having to deal with the idiocies of Windows like viruses, etc. The only way Windows PCs work out cheaper (in the initial purchase price) is because they often bundle in "freebie" things like printers, wireless keyboard / mouse, laptop bags, etc. ... but you're still stuck with Windows and the "freebies" often aren't particularly good quality anyway.

For the iMac, there's very little competition anyway. I think one model from Dell and one from Hewlett Packard is about all there really is that is remotely similar.

In all cases, if you buy a "cheap" Windows PC, you end up with what you paid for - garbage, and that's especially true of the "cheapo" no-name brands.

Of course Apple are going to cut the price on the next iMacs. They cant charge current prices for all in ones that use the Atom CPU. I jest i jest :p

Not true. Three years ago, I bought a HP 15" laptop that is equivalent to my month old MBP in specs. The HP laptop has been one of the best laptops that I have ever owned. I still use it everyday just as much as my MBP. It's been upgraded to Vista and runs it like it was built to do so, it came with XP. That HP cost $700 at CircuitCity back then.

I have a high end Dell, high end IBM and high end Sony sitting here in my office. They still don't hold a candle to the MBP. Part of it is the superb hardware. Light weight and super strong chassis. Great looking LED lit screen. Battery that goes forever. Superb glass trackpad with gesture control.

The other part of it is OS X. Saying good bye to virus scans, spyware scanners, dozens of application and OS updates every week.

If you are happy with your Vista laptop that's great. You aren't going to convince many though that it matches the experience of a MBP.

jmpage, i have to say you convinved me earlier about the MBP. im still going to hold off until they update again to buy one cuz i dont need a laptop right now, but i agree that the extra features (+ OSX obv) make it worthwhile & the best laptop around for 99% of people (some are proabbly going to need one that can handle very heavy CPU load). i looked into it some more and it really is an amazing machine. you kind of have to watch the video reviews to get it. its the best example of what people mean here when they say an apple product is much more than its spec sheet. while i still disagree on some of their products the MBP is definitely not one of them.

Just make sure you get the matte screen option, unless you have a pretty high glare tolerance. I hope that whatever else happens we get a matte screen iMac in the next six months. The glossy screen on my pimped out 24" iMac gives me headaches.

You shouldn't "think", you don't seem to be very good at it. Try "researching" instead.

Gateway and Asus and Sony also have all-in-ones that are even multi-touch.

Windows 7 versus Mac OS

Microsoft is laughing their ass off about this. Clearly Microsoft's commercials, along with a slowing economy, have had an impact on Apple's pricing strategy. And Apple realizes that Window 7 has significantly narrowed the gap at the OS level and must do something to keep their 8% market-share and noT loose ground.

I'll believe it when I see it, I know nothing about W7, buy if it still has a registry similar to earlier versions, W7 will retain windows biggest flaw, IMO, the accumulation of useless instructions within the registry, slowing the speed of the OS as it ages on your desk
Never again for me, the Mac OS is far superior to MS, even if it means paying a few extra bucks to keep a machine with a Mac OS, I'll gladly fork over the money, my time is worth something and I have spend countless hours trying to get things to work on PC, those days are over for me.

These are just ugly. No wonder iMacs sell so well. Touch isn't going to work standing up, after Apple's tablet changes the print industry -forever-, we'll be acclimatised to laying a computer down and iMacs will get a horizontal form factor. Then- you'll see touch computing.

Meanwhile, looks like the 13th date has come and gone, the Apple Store hasn't gone down and Steve Jobs hasn't demoed iLife '10 or iWork '10. Maybe it will just be minor upgrades and a price cut.

Wouldn't hurt, Apple…

Save iLife & iWork for CES and some fancy version that runs on the tablet, Steve.

Is it possible for a friend to buy one in the US and send it to you?

Actually up until this recent Gateway model they haven't been feature and price competitive. I found most non Apple AIO to be missing out on the discreet graphics that many iMacs had, let other options for the price they were at.

Now this Gateway is beyond silly in what it offers for hardware. Quad Core, 8gb RAM, 64gb SSD, 1gb ATI discreet, AND 1TB drive? For 1399?

If anything I hope for more developments like this as it might nudge Apple

In fact there is MacObsession, there's a friend of mine going to NY in december, but my primarely question is the warranty and the reciept of the purshuse (financial issues :p) if it's valid here in portugal, and the major one, if i have that kind of money in december

In France, it's 2099€ too, but I think it's the same in Portugal, it include Taxes, and in the US it's 2199$ whithout Taxes

So, 2099€ with 19,6% taxes (in France, don't now for Portugal), it's 1687€ whithout taxes, and 1687€ --> 2480$, so we are f*** on "only" 280$

I think the price is the same in Europe. Here the taxes are at 21% lolol nice isn't it!

I always like taxes in Europe …

It's more than 2pm, looks like the news products aren't for today

i guess we all gonna have to wait till next tuesday, particularly i'm not in such hurry, well i am just for the thrill of seeying what's new, but my focus is for to buy one and as I'll just buy in the end of the year, early 2010 i can wait....have to lol

It's very hard to sneak that by customs without paying some kind of fee or tax in Europe. I sold a license to my software at about $2000 and tried to just send the discs to my buyer in the UK. He had to fight tooth and claw to not get his "second hand item" taxed out the wazoo.

yes it's true.

More, a few days ago in the news here in portugal they where talking about the people who came from US they where searched if they where bringing electronic gadgets bought in the US, iPhone specifically :p :p even the pilots where searched, they kind wanna stop that.

And bringing an 24' iMac...not sure where to put it. I guess the old "ohh..i'm just happy to be back" wouldn't be enough!

i might as well wait (commun feeling around here lolol), to buy here

You also have to be careful taking hardware outside the US. There is a US Federal Law about taking technology purchased in the States outside the states. I just don't want to see anyone get in trouble.

DDave don't worry, all the troubles and headaches that this would give me and extra money that i would have to pay at customes it just would not compensate me
