i always thought the 4S was a "plan b" so to speak..i think apple had almost every intention of a redesigned iphone but who knows maybe jobs was so hands on that with him getting sicker it put a speed bump in the plans..

thats why i am on the side of the next iphone coming much quicker than the normal turn around time, june at the latest!

Apple would never burn their own iproducts, especially when they are the top sellers in every category. We had a long list of iPad 3 rumors in 2011... right?

Every Apple release enjoys at least a year in the spotlight, this has been the case with every iPhone and iPad (and I think even iPods).

i will keep my 4 until iphone5 is confirmed to have a 4" screen. if the 5 does not have a 4" or better size i will keep my iphone4

----------

Hey Apple, I want to have the ULTIMATE big screen phone! Can you just build a 9.7inch screen to it? That would be awesome for browsing. I find 5" is still too small.

...oh wait, I have that already. Its called the iPad :D

^^^ why do people say stuff like that???

fact is the iphone screen at 4" will be perfect not to small and not too big.. 3.5 is too small because controlling a touch screen effectively requires you finger to block part or most of the screen at times .. thats fine on ipad but the iphone is too small

And Android devices aren't marred with the same problems ? Tell that to my flagship Galaxy Nexus, just don't call me on it as I currently won't be able to hear you.... Or text me as it often crashes out of the messaging app....

It's interesting how some of the guys around here are the first to know about the volume bug, but the last to know that it's been fixed in software.

Back on topic, this really isn't that much of a story. Happens every time a new iOS Beta comes out.

why would there be code for the next iPhone?
in iOS 5.1?
i would think it would only show up towards the end of the iOS 5, just before iOS6 betas

The iPhone 5,New Apple TV and iPad are all listed because they are being tested using IOS 5.1. The software needs to identify the devices that are using it.

Most new devices require a minimum software version. 5.1 is probably that minimum.

The sooner the better. After Apple mucked up the 4 & 4S, I don't give a flip what they call it just get it done.

I should have never sold my 3GS, that was a far better phone.

Apple doesn't care, but if they did they'd be embarrassed with Antennagate, followed by batterygate. Two phones in a row with a laundry list of problems.

The 3GS was a great phone. But after having a 4S since it's release all I can say is that it's a much greater phone.

I, too, somehow *suspect* that the iphone 5 will be released a bit earlier than say October 2012 - perhaps a few months earlier - say July or August. No doubt it will have LTE and in October anandtech had this excellent article entitled: Why No LTE iPhone 5 in 2011? Blame 28nm Maturity, Check Back In Q2/Q3 2012

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4925/why-no-lte-iphone-5-blame-28nm-maturity

To quote: "If you're waiting for an LTE enabled iPhone 5 (or just better battery life out of an LTE smartphone), you'll have to wait until late Q2 next year at the earliest."

Now there is a more recent article from here:

http://www.tested.com/news/qualcomms-new-chips-keeps-lte-ipad-dream-alive/3183/

To quote from a sub-heading:"Qualcomm's 28nm LTE chips launching in early 2012 should be small enough to fit in Apple's next iPhone and iPad while also improving battery life in next year's phones."

I see - just with some posters - a clear schism. Those who have bought the 4S are poopooing an earlier release date than October 2012 and those who did not make the jump to the 4S are all for a release a few months earlier. Purely understandable reactions. Myself, I held off on buying the 4S and I am all for an earlier release date :)

Do you even own a 4 or 4S?

No battery problems here. As to the antenna it has been shown again and again that it performs far better than average.

I personally wouldn't mind having a five inch phone. I've had the chance to use a 4.5'in screen and it felt so much better on my eyes then the iPhone screen. Not that I have any vision problems or anything, but when I switched back to my iP4s screen it felt like I was straining my eyes.

Why? This is what happens at all companies.

That is you release new products and then go to work on the next. Really what else would they do, go on a six month vacation?

I'm a little shocked that we're seeing references to the new iPhone so soon after the 4S.

My ideal would be a 4" screen *and* a less fragile phone (I don't generally drop my phones and don't like cases). An aluminum back as previously mooted would be what I would like.

Big news! There's going to be an iPhone 5. Who whould have ever thunk that? Now I can sleep at night, no longer having to worry about it.

That is exactly why I have ditched my iPhone 3GS and now have a Samsung galaxy SII the screen just puts the iPhone 4 and 4s to shame , larger and richer colours, rather than higher pixel density at the same size !

And the plastic might feel less robust, but all my friends already have cracks in the back or front of the 4S they just picked up, my sII is unscathed and has been dropped several times already

I would be very surprised if Apple drops the glass sandwich. I remember reading about patents that apple submitted for incorporating solar cells at the back of the phone, maybe not with the iPhone 4(s) or even the iPhone 5(s), but it is something that Apple has been at least toying with.

Perfect for those who feel comfortable leaving their iPhone outside lying upside down for hours on end!

Next iPhone will be iPhone 5,1.
Next iPhone may be called iPhone 5.

iPhone 5,1; iPhone 5. Sounds like a safe bet people. Just because it's literally the sixth gen iPhone doesn't mean anything.

The iPhone 4 is the iPhone 3,1, but it's not called the iPhone 3, is it?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/9A405)

Have a feeling this one's coming sooner rather than later.

Holiday Constraints on 4S production.

1. Samsung holding back A5's?
2. Less A5 production as Samsung ramps up A6 production?
3. Production capacity being rapidly shifted to have new products announced in March. April ship?
4. None of the above. Just a rumor?

2 & 3 would be the selection. :apple:

No, you're right on that front. But it just makes sense. Do you really honestly think that Apple is going to go from the iPhone 4S to the iPhone 6? That makes zero sense dude use your logic here. They wouldn't do that, it's ridiculous. Even if it is the sixth gen. LOGIC tells you that the next step up is the iPhone 5, not the 6. If you sit there and tell me otherwise than you're just being stubborn.

I would obviously really like the 5 coming in April but that seems way to early and would cause an enormous backlash amongst current iphone purchasers. It is one thing for Samsung et al to do this with the various flavours of the month but with Apple, generally, you can more or less rely on semi-constant refresh cycles.

To have the 5 come out six months after the 4S would be really bad PR.

Perfect for those who feel comfortable leaving their iPhone outside lying upside down for hours on end!

Or perfect for all those who realize that solar panels could charge from artificial light as well, and those panels could make it easier to get through the day without needing a charger in your car, at your office and beside your bed.
