What if it's another notification? Push or mail or otherwise?

Screen clutter. Many of us get 10 or 20 emails an hour. A dialog box for missed phone calls and text messages is a good compromise. I could see having the options to add other notifications.

Clutter is bad. simplicity is good.

Never had to count LEDs on my blackberry. Had to count the vibrations, but that was simple too. Short, medium, long. So simple and painless.

Sounds like the go then.

Maybe if Apple copied more ideas from the Blackberry the iPhone would be more successful...

Simple to you, but not to others
I find it really hard to use SD cards and to swap batteries. Counting? NO WAY.

Eh, mostly thinking of my old phone with vibrations. The difference between the vibration length wasn't enough I guess. My current phone has LEDs but I just got it so I have no comments on the usefulness  Glows green when charged... I like that.

It looks like those side seams are still there! If they remain on the production model, there must be a good reason for them being there. I wonder what it is.

One of the things great about the iPhone (and Macs for that matter), is that Apple don't just "add an LED or something" willy-nilly.

I guess you never noticed the LED sleep and battery life indicators on all of Apples macbooks.

I second that a LED indicator on an iphone would be both useful and not that hard to implement.

Some people have this crazy theory that the whole iPhone prototype/Gizmodo thing was a plant by Apple to get free advertising about the next iPhone release.

While I've been mostly on the side of those who believe that it was indeed lost by an Apple employee "by mistake", there's one thing that has been bugging me:

The overall design of this leaked thing does look like some prototype iPhone, almost as it was intended to be that way, as a "skeleton" of an iPhone 3G(s) without all the "of so fancy" curved shape that everyone is copying now (ie. the Pre and the MS Kins).

I can picture Ive and Jobs discussing the look of the next iPhone and one of them saying: "How about we make it look like a prototype". And from there we could imagine that someone would have the idea of "losing this supposed prototype casing in the wild, hoping that it would get sold to some tech blog".

The only problems with this theory is that Apple would have to bet that the prototype would be found by someone that knew of its value and sold it to a popular blog like Gizmodo. The only other problem I can see is that Apple can risk losing sales because the mainstream public now knows about it.

And if it wasn't implied by what I wrote, this un-symetric seam on the top of this iPhone does look to me as a minimalist design element that screams "prototype".

If the next iPhone does look like the leaked prototype this crazy theory will make more sense as the leaked design does look "prototypy" IMHO.

Thinking about the seams, it would make sense if they market this thing as being more durable than previous iPhones. Take a gorilla glass type screen, add in a similarly durable backing, you're main point of fracture is going to be dropping it. Having relief stress points (seams) in the external casing is going to help disperse the force.

Look at the size of rubber strip around the iPad... it dwarfs the iPhone 3GS, even relative to the weight of the unit. This is clearly something that Apple is looking at.

No way this is the final design. It's too industrial looking for Apple. This is the company that resisted putting two buttons on a mouse for crying out loud, and now the new iPhone looks like it was slapped together, with random seams visible?

keep denying

Are the seams really that bad?

The leaked photos of the plastic iPhone 3G looked like an ugly bar of soap, but it turned out well.

I may be wrong, but this looks like a phone repair company showing off some replacement parts for the new iphone. If so, this is not a prototype. You don't send replacement parts out for a phone you aren't going to sell.

Would it seriously kill Apple to add an LED or something to the front of the device so that you know you received a new message, etc. without having to turn the screen on, unlock the device and look at your applications?

I think Apple's answer to this is related to this patent:

Basically "Apple proposes the implementation of a dual backlight system ..."

where they can display "icon-like status indicators on the iPhone's displays even when the handset is locked and the backlight turned off ..."

where "users would be able to determine whether they missed a call or communication without touching their iPhone..."

or any kind of icon or for any kind of info (battery low symbol, new mail, etc). The secondary backlight is very low-powered so that it can always be on. So, no need to add an LED to front of device - it's on the screen!

Unless they sent out different fake parts to different repair companies just to see who leaks them.

"We only have a few sample parts, however, we are sending you a few so you can get a feel for them. Please don't give them to the press."

Don't over think it...

Has anyone else watched the other videos on their site? Like this one there's a lot of slight of hand involved that suggests they're covering something up, a bit like how we don't see the holes for the volume keys on the casing. The other thing that got me was a vid of them un boxing the screen and the packaging just looked wrong, a hand written lable and lots of tape and bubble wrap, it just didn't look right to me, plus there was a piece of paper in with it but the guy whisks it away from shot before you get to see what it is.

Also did apple not learn from the battery door issues that the original unibody MacBooks had with them warping and the tabs and mechanism failing?

As much as this is likely to be the finished item I suredo hope it isn't!

An iPad inspired design would be very nice not the flat thing we see here :(

They are there, at one point (38 second mark) you can see his finger through them. I looked for this specifically as I REALLY dislike the look of the volume controls on the leaked iPhone.

I've gotten over the generic design.

Now what is really bugging me is that video with at least hands to compare it to for size, for some reason that screen looks significantly smaller than the current iphone. Which, imho, is not a good thing.

Yeah, why waste battery power to fire up 153,600 lights, when 1 could have done it?

Green = on, all is well
Yellow = missed notification or text message
Red = missed call

I like the idea of the Home button lighting up, but I figured that's what the break in seam was for.

Exactly. Doesnt even have to be multi-colored - just a Red LED (for instance) letting you know theres SOMETHING awaiting your attention.

What about the "flash" on the back? That's probably just an LED. Couldn't it act as a message indicator light when the phone's screen is locked?

Maybe the seams are for accessories? Something that allows things to clip on laterally? They seem really unnecessary though and very un-Apple-like.

Yuck. Can you honestly see a generic red LED on an Apple product?

If it did happen, I would bet that it would be white underneath the home button, pulsing. That's probably the least ugly way of doing it.

Also, I wouldn't be opposed to a green/orange ring around the iPhone/iPod charging cables that works the same way as the MacBook ones. That would be a useful feature. (But not if it makes the cables cost significantly more.)

Wouldn't be able to see it when the phone was sitting screen up, which is how most people sit the phone down.
