Wouldn't be able to see it when the phone was sitting screen up, which is how most people sit the phone down.

Picky, picky... I leave mine screen down most of the time BTW. I just don't like it sitting on that stupid curved back. So glad they're getting rid of that design, and going back to a flat back.

i really hope there are several different prototypes that apple are considering.
This looks so un-apple like. and what happened to the aluminium metal frame bit?
i found it really sturdy as it saved me from having a cracked iphone screen on many occasion whenever i accidently dropped it. sort of cushioning and minimising the impact.

now with metal frame gone. wonder what will happen with awkward landing :(

I can't wait until the keynote. Jobs will say something like "Hmm, you might have seen this before" (Audience laughter). :D

Still dunno why they didn't go to 3.7" and instead went smaller but higher res. Bad bad bad. Also there's still no LED indicator...why do you have to power up the phone just to see if its charged/charging/dead or you've missed anything.

*Sigh*

*Looks lustfully at the HTC Desire*

One thing always annoys me.

Why do they have to have so much wasted non screen area at the top and bottom on the phone? :(

You have 1 button at the bottom and a thin speaker slot at the top, but I'm sure they could reduce this blank area and would look better.

What is with those random seams in the case? Please tell me they just got a hold of another prototype case, and not the production case.....

It appears the cellular antenna could be the whole aluminum chassis behind the display. The diagonal lines sure look like it. The seams may be there to tune it.

Horrible

Is Apple using the same Chinese factory as LG to make more profit ?
Looks just the same. I would not walk around with that.

It's kinda the same reason why the MacBooks aren't 0mm thick.

Hint: There's stuff on the inside.

Because it's chock full of stuff in there...

Top above the display: Ambient light sensor, proximity beam, proximity receiver, earpiece, camera, headphone jack, Sim card tray (huge) on previous models, flash, second microphone and a second camera on the new model.

Bottom below the display: Dock connector, Speaker, Microphone, home button. Cellular antenna on previous models

Some people have this crazy theory that the whole iPhone prototype/Gizmodo thing was a plant by Apple to get free advertising about the next iPhone release.

While I've been mostly on the side of those who believe that it was indeed lost by an Apple employee "by mistake", there's one thing that has been bugging me:

The overall design of this leaked thing does look like some prototype iPhone, almost as it was intended to be that way, as a "skeleton" of an iPhone 3G(s) without all the "of so fancy" curved shape that everyone is copying now (ie. the Pre and the MS Kins).

I can picture Ive and Jobs discussing the look of the next iPhone and one of them saying: "How about we make it look like a prototype". And from there we could imagine that someone would have the idea of "losing this supposed prototype casing in the wild, hoping that it would get sold to some tech blog".

The only problems with this theory is that Apple would have to bet that the prototype would be found by someone that knew of its value and sold it to a popular blog like Gizmodo. The only other problem I can see is that Apple can risk losing sales because the mainstream public now knows about it.

And if it wasn't implied by what I wrote, this un-symetric seam on the top of this iPhone does look to me as a minimalist design element that screams "prototype".

If the next iPhone does look like the leaked prototype this crazy theory will make more sense as the leaked design does look "prototypy" IMHO.

Dialog a few weeks ago in 1 Infinite Loop Cupertino:

- Look at these numbers! More and more people are buying those new nifty Android smartphones. Hell, the damn thing can multitask and even use multitouch after we specifically ask them not to implement it!

- Not good. Our new iPhone is not ready for production yet. We have to do something about it.

- Let one of our engineers “misplace” a prototype somewhere public. It will eventually find its way into the net like everything these days.

-Good idea. That way people will know a new iPhone is on the horizon and will wait for it. After all not everyone will spend $400 on a phone to have it replaced just a couple of months later.

-And we can even gather feedback about these new design lines. After all the looks are not really consistent with the rest of our products.

For some reason, I just don't like the sandwich design.
Just wish the final design could look more like this

I like this design definitely. And I like if it come with this kind of color...

With such a cool looking iphone coming, I can't seem to figure out why no camera on the ipad. If we are going to be able to ichat on the iphone via wifi can't see 3G been able to handle that much bandwidth, why not bring out the ultimate ipad with a camera.

I know next one will have it, oh well will just upgrade when that one comes. :D

Well its the first iPad. They know it'll sell and there's no point putting all the features on it. Gives users more reasons to upgrade to newer models.

I'm not sure of the thickness of the screen unit itself, as to why the screen can't lay over the top of these devices (apart from anything that has to poke through the actual front)

Like on TV/Monitor, the screen covers the whole face and everything fits in behind the screen (apart from speakers along the bottom edge normally)

I think this screenshot shows what I mean:

(nicer with less black bezel)

Well we wouldn't know if this was legitimate. But thanks to a idiot that had to get drunk and leave the prototype at a bar, this may very well be the final external design. Surprise.

Best Buy clearing out refurb. 3G models

Today an email ad from Best Buy has FREE refurbished iPhone 3G models w/ 2 year contract. A sure sign the new 4th generation iPhone is right around the corner.

You guys make me laugh.... It is SO hard to push your home button to see if you have a call/email/text. Boo hoo we need a little light blinking or we wont be able to tell. FFS grow up. As far as the lines in the case, you can bet they are there for a reason. For those that say this design isn't apple... Bullpucky! The 3g/3gs are un-apple. This is going back to aluminum and glass, simple design that is 100% apple. SO, stop the whining and get over it. This IS most likely the next iPhone. I would be more than happy to have all of you that don't like it go to another carrier, will free up some bandwidth for the rest of us. So see ya later, don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya!

Yeah because the fact that he left it at the bar totally made apple decide that was the final design. Really, you think that?

Steve Jobs very much liked the new Star Trek movie. I am quite sure that is where the inspiration came from.

So is he ditching Ive as a designer and hiring J.J. Abrams? As others have mentioned, I still don't understand those strange seams around the rim. I don't understand them from a design point of view, and they appear to have no functionality (other than lint collectors).

Horary for the iPhone but I' wondering... will this also mean a possible iPod Touch update or will the iPod Touch be put on the iPad refresh schedule?
