Just saw this today. Take for what it's worth

Yes, that is quoting the Commercial Times article I was talking about.

Anyhow, Commercial Times and Ming-Chi Kuo have been contradicting each other. Commercial Times has been saying it's all coming on 3nm, whereas Ming-Chi Kuo says the new MBPs begin production this quarter which is too early for 3 nm.

I paid about $15.000 in 1995 for a Powermac 7100 system (with a $1500 Audiomedia card).

Similar here, $7500 for:
  • Power Computing PowerTower Pro
  • 225MHz 604e PowerPC CPU
  • 8MB ixMicro TwinTurbo GPU
  • 64MB RAM
  • 2GB HDD
  • EIAS 3D software (student pricing)
Sadly, I lost my license dongle in a move, and there went EIAS...!

...but expectations of technology change as well as prices. Yes, if you wanted to do exactly the same job you were doing in 1995 a 2020 $700 Mac Mini would probably ace it, in absolute terms, but relative to the current "state of the art" the equivalent machine today is probably a $10k+ Mac Pro system.

The "competition" in 1995 was probably a $30k Silicon Graphics workstation.

And that $30K would be getting one into an entry-level machine, entry-level DCC software could double that cost...!

Apple could technically release it late November / early December on 3nm but in very limited quantities. They've done that before.

This would also be a great guess if Apple is hell bent on keeping its word for a 2-year Apple Silicon transition

You really don’t need to upgrade every generation. Spec bumps like these are for people who don't already have the M1 to consider buying the shinier and more expensive newer stuff over the older M1 stuff.
Or you ARE the type that wants the newest/fastest whatever and you can afford it. Which isn’t a crime, with some things I was that person once. I could honestly use it, I liked having the newest features, and after I got married money wasn’t quite as available so I’m not that person anymore. But it was fun going in and buying something new and fast without worrying too much about what it cost.

Computers, cameras and stereo’s were my favorite things to buy. Most other things I either used what I had or bought a cheap version.

FWIW, @Amethyst's posts suggest the Mac Pro is too early in the development process for release that soon. Sounds like 2023 to me.

You do realize this forum is for fanboys and not tech nerds, right? I'll read this on Anand Tech and Tom's Hardware, my friend ;)

Oh, and much appreciated. Nice post :)
Anandtech & tomshardware 😂 oh dear lord.

What's next, you gonna tell us the Big Bang Theory was an accurate depiction of nerd culture and Amazon's Rings of Power is amaaaazing!!!

I dunno. What's an accurate depiction of nerd culture then?
